Urgent or planned: the fastest official route for a work permit, medical, Emirates ID and residence renewal, the published fees at every speed, and what blocks it. Our fee in writing before we start.
Employment visa renewal in Dubai is the renewal of a private-sector employee's MOHRE work permit and employment contract, followed by a new medical fitness test, Emirates ID and residence permit from GDRFA Dubai, normally every two years. The employer applies. Renewal skips the entry permit and status change of a first visa, so it is cheaper and faster, but only when the company file and the employee's documents are clean. Whether you searched for an employment visa renewal in Dubai, urgent or planned, this page is for employers, HR teams and employees who need it done quickly and correctly: the fastest official route, what it costs at each speed, what blocks it, and what to do if the visa has already expired.
For every fee line of a first visa and a renewal side by side, see our employment visa renewal cost breakdown. This page is about getting the renewal through fast.
Each step has a published speed. The time you actually need depends on whether anything on the company file or the employee's file has to be fixed first. The table shows the regular and the fastest published option for each step.
| Step | Regular | Fastest published option | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| MOHRE work permit renewal (labour card) and contract | Applied for through Tasheel or the MOHRE app, from 60 days before expiry | Same channels; speed depends on the file being clean | MOHRE: Issuance and renewal of employment contracts |
| Medical fitness test (Dubai) | AED 250, result in 24 working hours | DHA express AED 700 in 6 hours; DHA VIP AED 1,020 in 2 working hours; Smart Salem AED 700 in 30 minutes | DHA service catalogue; smartsalem.ae |
| Emirates ID | 5 days on ICP's standard service | Urgent option, AED 150 extra | ICP: New identity card issuance |
| Residence renewal (GDRFA) | 48 hours for a complete file | Same; the file must be complete | GDRFA: Renewing a residence permit for the private sector |
Nobody can buy a faster government decision. What an urgent renewal really means is: every blocker cleared before submission, the fastest medical tier booked, the Emirates ID urgent option paid, and the residence filed the moment the medical result reaches GDRFA. On a clean file that usually brings the whole renewal down to a few working days. We will tell you honestly if yours cannot be done that fast, and why.
These are the government lines for a two-year renewal of one employee on a Dubai mainland company. We pass them on at cost with the official receipts. Our own fee is separate and quoted in writing.
| Fee line (per employee) | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| MOHRE work permit renewal, category 1 / 2 / 3 company | AED 250 / 1,200 / 3,450 | Cabinet Resolution 21 of 2020 (fees); company categories under Cabinet Resolution 18 of 2022 |
| Medical fitness, Dubai: regular / express / VIP / Smart Salem | AED 250 / 700 / 1,020 / 700 | DHA catalogue; smartsalem.ae |
| Emirates ID, two years (AED 100 a year + AED 100 smart services) | AED 300 | ICP |
| Emirates ID urgent option | + AED 150 | ICP |
| Residence renewal, two years: GDRFA card lines / GDRFA FAQ total | AED 740 / AED 460 | GDRFA private-sector renewal card; GDRFA FAQ |
| Health insurance for the employee (employer's cost) | Policy price | u.ae: required before residence issue or renewal for private-sector employees since 1 January 2025 |
| Work permit not renewed within 60 days of expiry | AED 200 a month, max AED 2,000 | Cabinet Resolution 21 of 2020, Article 3 |
| Overstay once the grace period ends | AED 50 a day | ICP; u.ae |
The two GDRFA residence figures do not agree, so our totals use the higher card figure and tell you when the payment screen comes in lower. Typing and service-centre charges are added at Tasheel and Amer, with VAT on those charges.
| Worked total, one employee, two years | Category 1 | Category 2 | Category 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular speed (regular medical, standard Emirates ID) | AED 1,540 | AED 2,490 | AED 4,740 |
| Urgent (DHA VIP medical, Emirates ID urgent option) | AED 2,460 | AED 3,410 | AED 5,660 |
Totals are work permit fee + medical + Emirates ID + residence at the GDRFA card figure (AED 740). On the GDRFA FAQ figure each total is AED 280 lower. They exclude health insurance, typing charges, fines and our fee.
Employment visa renewal Dubai cost calculator (published government fees)
Published fee lines only, with the residence at the GDRFA card figure (AED 740; the FAQ gives AED 460). Excludes health insurance, typing and service-centre charges, fines and our fee. The payment screen is the final figure.
We run the renewal from the first check to the new Emirates ID, for one employee or a whole team. Documents come to us on WhatsApp. The employee comes in person only for the medical and, if ICP calls for it, biometrics.
Establishment card, trade licence, MOHRE company status and category, open company fines, the employee's ILOE status, passport validity and health insurance. Anything that would stop the file is found before a dirham is spent.
Government fees line by line at cost, the speed options with their extra cost, and our own fee as a fixed amount. You choose regular or urgent.
The MOHRE work permit renewal, often still called labour card renewal, is filed through Tasheel with the renewed contract for the employee to accept. See our MOHRE work permit service.
Smart Salem, DHA VIP or express, booked around the employee's shift, with the result tracked to GDRFA. See our medical fitness test service.
Filed with GDRFA through Amer the moment the medical is linked, with the Emirates ID urgent option if you chose it.
New residence, Emirates ID, contract and every receipt, plus the next renewal date for each employee so the next one is never urgent.
Almost every "urgent" renewal we receive is late because of something outside the visa. Check these first.
| Blocker | Why it stops the renewal | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Expired establishment card | The company cannot carry out any visa transaction | Renew it first; see establishment card renewal |
| Expired trade licence or open company fines | MOHRE and GDRFA transactions stop | Identify and clear before filing |
| Company moved to category 3 | The work permit fee jumps from AED 1,200 to AED 3,450 per employee | Explain the cause and whether it can be fixed |
| Unpaid ILOE fine on the employee | MOHRE has said workers with unpaid fines can be refused new permits | Check, pay or ask for instalments through MOHRE; see ILOE registration and fines |
| No health insurance on file | Required before residence renewal for private-sector employees | Confirm the policy names the employee and covers the renewal |
| Passport under six months | The residence cannot be renewed | New passport first, then a passport transfer on the file |
| Employee outside the UAE | Medical and biometrics need them in the country; a long absence can end the residence | Plan the return date around the renewal; see the re-entry permit guide |
Two clocks start: MOHRE's for the work permit and the immigration clock for the residence.
| Clock | What the official source says | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit (MOHRE) | Renew within 60 days of expiry | AED 200 a month, up to AED 2,000 (Cabinet Resolution 21 of 2020) |
| Residence, Dubai file (GDRFA) | GDRFA's private-sector renewal card: 60 days after expiry | AED 50 a day overstay |
| Residence, other emirates (ICP) | 90 days for skilled workers at levels 1 to 3; 30 days for "all other categories" | AED 50 a day overstay |
Because GDRFA and ICP publish different grace periods, check the exact date on the GDRFA or ICP app, and do not rely on anything longer than the shortest period that could apply to you. If the employee's job has ended, renewal is not available and the route is a cancellation and a new visa or an exit; see our UAE residence visa grace period guide.
If you are an employee searching for how to renew your employment visa, the renewal is your employer's job and your employer's cost. Article 6 of Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 prevents employers from recovering recruitment and employment costs from workers. The one policy in your own name is ILOE unemployment insurance, at AED 5 or AED 10 a month plus VAT depending on your basic salary. Keep it active, because an unpaid ILOE fine can hold up your permit.
If your visa is close to expiry and the company has not started the renewal, ask HR in writing for the renewal date. If the employer refuses or keeps delaying, MOHRE is the authority to approach; our guide on how to file a MOHRE complaint explains the steps. Many small companies simply have no PRO. In that case we work for the employer, and the employer pays.
These cases are composites built from situations we handle often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.
The renewal stuck on the company file. A trading company's accountant came to us four days before a sales executive's visa expired. The typing centre had rejected the file twice. The establishment card had expired the month before, so every visa transaction was blocked. We renewed the card first, then filed the work permit, a Smart Salem medical and the residence. The renewal finished inside the grace period, with no overstay.
Twenty permits and a category change. A contracting company planned its renewals on AED 1,200 per permit, but a wage protection breach had moved it to category 3. At AED 3,450, the batch cost AED 45,000 more than budgeted. We showed the owner the cause on the MOHRE record, renewed the staff whose permits were inside the fine window first, and staggered the rest while the company resolved the breach.
The employee flying out on Friday. An engineer's residence expired the same week as a family trip, and his Emirates ID had to be renewed before his bank would release a salary transfer. With a clean company file, we booked a DHA VIP medical, paid the Emirates ID urgent option and filed the residence the same afternoon the medical was linked.
GDRFA publishes 48 hours for a complete residence renewal file. With a clean company file, a same-day or 2-hour medical and the Emirates ID urgent option, a renewal can usually be finished in a few working days. Blockers such as an expired establishment card add time and must be fixed first.
Yes. The fastest published options are a Smart Salem medical in 30 minutes or DHA VIP in 2 working hours, the ICP Emirates ID urgent option for AED 150 extra, and GDRFA's 48-hour residence renewal. The biggest time saving comes from clearing company blockers before you submit.
On published lines, a two-year renewal of one employee costs about AED 1,540 for a category 1 company, AED 2,490 for category 2 and AED 4,740 for category 3, with the residence at the GDRFA card figure. The urgent options add about AED 920. Health insurance, typing charges and our fee are extra.
The employer. The Labour Law bars employers from recovering employment costs from workers. The employee pays only their own ILOE unemployment insurance.
MOHRE allows the work permit and contract renewal from 60 days before expiry. Starting then leaves time for the medical, any fix to the company file and the residence, without touching the grace period.
A work permit not renewed within 60 days of expiry is fined AED 200 a month, up to AED 2,000. Once the residence grace period ends, overstay costs AED 50 a day.
GDRFA's private-sector renewal card gives 60 days. ICP publishes 90 days for skilled workers at levels 1 to 3 and 30 days for other categories. Check the exact date on the GDRFA or ICP app and plan on the shortest period that could apply.
Yes. Every employee aged 18 or over takes a medical fitness test at each renewal. In Dubai the regular test is AED 250; express, VIP and Smart Salem options give results in 6 hours, 2 working hours or 30 minutes.
The work permit side can often be started, but the medical and any biometrics need the employee in the UAE. If they have been outside for close to six months, check the position before booking the return flight.
Yes. The MOHRE work permit fee is AED 250 for category 1, AED 1,200 for category 2 and AED 3,450 for category 3. A company that has dropped a category since the last renewal pays the higher fee.
It can. MOHRE has said workers with unpaid ILOE fines can be refused new work permits. The fine can be checked, paid or put on instalments through MOHRE's ILOE Quick Pay service.
Government fees are passed on at cost with the official receipts. Our fee depends on the number of employees, the speed you choose and whether anything must be fixed first. We quote it in writing after the free same-day check, and it does not change once agreed.
Please note. MIRDXB PRO is a private PRO services company in Al Barsha 1, Dubai, open Monday to Thursday and Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and Friday 09:00 to 12:00. We are not MOHRE, GDRFA, ICP, Amer, Tasheel or any government body, and we are not affiliated with them. We cannot speed up a government decision; we choose the fastest published options and remove the delays on your side. Government fees are passed on at cost; our own fee is quoted in writing before we start. Fees and rules on this page were checked against the official sources listed, as used in our guides verified between 23 and 26 September 2026. If an official page has changed since then, the official page wins.
