Key takeaways

  • Trade name registration (Dubai) is done with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) on the Invest in Dubai platform, usually in minutes. You get a trade name certificate that carries the name in Arabic and English, the legal form and the activity.
  • The name must end with its legal-form suffix (for example LLC, or “Limited Liability One Person Company (OPC)” for a single owner), fit the activity, and not repeat a registered name (Federal Decree-Law 32/2021, Arts. 12 and 72; u.ae).
  • Hard refusals: God’s names, religions and sects, government names and logos, obscene words, brands you do not own, a family name used alone, symbols, and names starting with “Universal”, “Middle East” or “International” (DET service card).
  • The name decides part of your fee. An ordinary name is AED 200 in DET’s schedule; a neighbourhood, trademark or Arabised name adds AED 1,000; a foreign, numeric or acronym name, or one using “Dubai”, “Emirates” or “Gulf”, adds AED 2,000 (Executive Council Resolution 13/2011, items 5 to 8).
  • A Dubai trade name reservation lasts six months. If no licence is issued in that time it is cancelled automatically and you pay again to re-reserve.
  • Changing the name later is a licence amendment, with a new reservation, an amendment fee, an announcement and knock-on updates at MOHRE, GDRFA, Dubai Chambers, the bank and the tax portal.
  • A trade name is not a trademark. DET registers the trade name; the Ministry of Economy and Tourism registers trademarks, for AED 6,500 in official fees and ten years of UAE-wide protection.
Have a name in mind for your Dubai company? Send it to us with your activity and legal form. We check it against DET’s rules, tell you which fee band it falls in, and suggest a cheaper spelling if one exists, before you pay anything.

Check my trade name

Trade name registration in Dubai means reserving your business name with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), which checks that the name follows its naming rules, carries the correct legal-form suffix and does not duplicate an existing name, then issues a trade name certificate valid for six months, during which you must obtain your trade licence under that name. The reservation is online on Invest in Dubai, takes about ten minutes when the name is clean, and costs from AED 200 in DET’s schedule plus service lines, more for foreign, numeric or special names.

This guide covers trade name registration, Dubai rules in full: what DET accepts and refuses, the suffix each legal form needs, how special names are priced, what the certificate is and how long it lasts, how to change a name after licensing, and why a trade name gives you less protection than most founders think. It is written for founders, investors and SME owners who want the name right the first time, because a name is cheap to reserve and expensive to change.

Your Dubai trade name is step three of a mainland set-up. For the whole route, from activity to bank and tax, see our mainland company formation guide. If you want the name, the licence and everything after it handled for you, our company formation support team does it.

Trade name registration Dubai: how MIRDXB PRO helps

Most founders pick a Dubai trade name idea, try it on Invest in Dubai, get a refusal or a surprise fee, and try again. We work the other way round: we test your shortlist against DET’s rules and fee bands first, flag names that will cost more every year, check whether the same brand is already a registered trademark, and then reserve the name you choose. We are an Amer and Tasheel partner in Al Barsha 1, Dubai, and trade names, licences and the files that follow them are part of our daily work.

What we do for your Dubai trade name

  • Screen your Dubai trade name shortlist. Suffix, activity fit, prohibited words, family-name rules, country and city names, and similar-sounding existing names.
  • Tell you the fee band before you commit. Ordinary, AED 1,000 special name or AED 2,000 special name, and whether a small spelling change moves the name to a cheaper band.
  • Trade name reservation, with the six months diarised. We reserve on Invest in Dubai, pay within the 72-hour window and give you the trade name certificate with the expiry date marked.
  • Carry the name into the licence. Initial approval, Ejari, memorandum of association and licence issue, so the certificate does not lapse halfway.
  • Handle a name change. New reservation, licence amendment, MoA addendum and the updates at MOHRE, GDRFA, Dubai Chambers and your bank.
  • Point you to trademark filing. We tell you when your brand needs a trademark with the Ministry and what the official fees are; a trademark agent or lawyer files it.

How it works

  1. Message us on WhatsApp with up to five name ideas, your activity, the legal form you have in mind and the owners’ nationalities.
  2. We reply in writing with which names pass, which fail and why, the fee band for each, and our fee.
  3. You choose, and we handle the trade name reservation. You receive the trade name certificate and its expiry date.
  4. If you want, we continue with initial approval and the licence, so the name is used before it lapses.

What it costs

Government fees are passed on at cost, on DET’s own voucher: the reservation, any special-name fee, the service lines and the two Dirhams. Our own fee for a Dubai trade name check and trade name reservation is quoted in writing before we start, and it is lower when the name is part of a full licence file. You can see how we price our work on our fees page, and the full list of government lines for a new licence is in our mainland business setup cost guide.

Why founders use us for the name

  • We publish our sources. Every rule and fee in this guide links to the page or law it came from, and where DET’s live pages are silent, we say so.
  • We tell you when you do not need us. If your name is ordinary and you already have UAE PASS, you can reserve it yourself on Invest in Dubai in minutes; we will say so.
  • We look beyond the reservation. A name that is fine for DET can still clash with someone’s trademark, or cost AED 2,000 more every year. We check both.
  • We are easy to reach. Our office is in Al Barsha 1, Dubai (Monday to Thursday and Saturday 09:00 to 18:00, Friday 09:00 to 12:00), and we act under power of attorney for owners abroad where DET allows it.
DET refused your name, or the voucher shows a fee you did not expect? Send us a screenshot of the refusal or the voucher and your name idea. We explain the reason and suggest names that will pass.

Fix my trade name issue

Where trade name registration (Dubai) fits in the licence process

A trade name is the name under which your business is licensed and does business. It is not the same as your brand, your website domain or your trademark, although the four are often identical. In Dubai the trade name is registered by DET and printed on the licence; everything else in your company’s life, from the Ejari to the bank account and staff visas, then carries that exact spelling.

DET’s own service card describes the reservation as a way “to obtain an official government document” that confirms the trade name and is “used in contracts and other official documents”. Trade name reservation can happen before or after the initial approval; DET’s initial approval card says the same from the other side. In practice most founders reserve the name first, because the name is what they are most attached to and the cheapest thing to lose.

The steps around the name, in the usual order:

  1. Activity and licence type. The main activity is added to the trade name, so choose it first. See our Dubai mainland licence types guide.
  2. Legal form. The form decides the suffix. See types of companies in Dubai.
  3. Trade name reservation. This guide.
  4. Initial approval. DET’s “no objection” to the activity, form and owners. See our initial approval guide.
  5. Premises, memorandum, approvals and licence. The certificate must still be valid when the licence issues. See the mainland company formation guide for the full route.

DET, the Ministry, and free zones: who registers what

BodyWhat it registersWhat that gives you
Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET)Trade names of mainland businesses licensed in Dubai; the licence and Dubai’s commercial registerThe right to trade under that name in Dubai, and priority over a similar name in similar trade
Other emirates’ economic departmentsTrade names for their own mainland licencesThe same, in that emirate; each has its own rules and fees
Free zone authoritiesCompany names for their own zone’s companiesA name registered with that zone’s registrar
Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MOET)Trademarks, and the National Economic Register that brings licence data togetherUAE-wide trademark protection for ten years; a public search of licences and trade names

u.ae puts it simply: “The local department of economic development registers the trade name, while Ministry of Economy and Tourism registers the trademark.” Keep that sentence in mind for the rest of this guide, because most naming disputes we see come from confusing the two.

Dubai’s trade name rules sit in four places: federal company law, the federal Commercial Transactions Law, Dubai’s economic activities law with its fee resolution, and DET’s own conditions on the service card. You do not need to read them to reserve a name, but knowing which rule sits where helps when an application is refused.

RuleWhat it says about trade names
Federal Decree-Law No. 32 of 2021 on Commercial Companies, Art. 12A company “shall have a trade name that does not conflict with the public order of the State”, followed by its legal form

Dubai trade name rules: what DET accepts and refuses

The rules below come from DET’s trade name service card, from u.ae’s mainland steps page (updated 16 July 2026) and from the Commercial Companies Law. DET’s live Invest in Dubai page for the service showed only its description when we checked on 25 September 2026, so we have relied on DET’s full service card as archived in September 2021, which Gulf News in 2022 and Khaleej Times in 2024 reported in the same terms. Where a rule is ours, from practice, we say so.

Letters, numbers and symbols

DET’s card says: “Alphabets and numbers are allowed but you cannot use icons or special characters.” A number is allowed, but a numeric name is priced as a special name (AED 2,000 under Resolution 13/2011, item 7). An ampersand or a stylised logo belongs in your trademark and signage, not in the registered name; write “and” instead.

Transliteration, not translation

Every Dubai trade name exists in Arabic and English. DET’s rule is that the name you choose “will be transliterated to Arabic or English but NOT translated”. “Silver Leaf” becomes “سلفر ليف” on the Arabic side, not the Arabic words for silver and leaf. This matters twice: your Arabic name may look odd to Arabic readers, and a name that sounds like an existing Arabic name can be blocked even if the English looks different, because DET’s database “is based on pronunciation”.

Personal and family names

You may use an owner’s or partner’s name, but DET wants the first name and family name together. Its own example: “Ahmed Al-Ghamdi Properties”, not “Al-Ghamdi Properties”. The reasoning, as Khaleej Times summarised DET’s guidance in 2024, is that family or tribal names cannot be used unless they are the applicant’s own. The same logic appears in federal law: Article 53 of the Commercial Transactions Law says an individual merchant’s trade name “shall consist of his given name and surname”.

A practical point: if the named partner leaves, the name does not leave with him automatically. The law says a trade name cannot be dealt with separately from the business (Art. 57), and a buyer may not use the predecessor’s name without authority (Art. 58). Agree in the memorandum what happens to a personal name if that partner exits.

Religion, government, countries and places

u.ae’s rule is that a trade name must “not contain names of any religion, or governing authority, nor names or logos of any external bodies”. DET’s card adds God’s names “and all Its synonyms”, sects and organisations, and names of countries, capitals or governments “except with the approval of the embassy of the country”. Regions and areas are treated two ways: some are refused and some are priced as a special name (a neighbourhood name is AED 1,000 under item 6). Expect DET to ask why your business needs a place name.

“Universal”, “Middle East”, “International”

DET’s card says a name may not start with “Universal”, “Middle East” or “International”, or their Arabic translations. These words promise a reach that a new licence does not have. Founders who want the idea of scale often use “Global” or “Worldwide” in the middle of the name; whether that passes is decided on the application, so treat it as something to test, not a rule.

Similar names and the Dubai trade name pronunciation check

The search on Invest in Dubai looks for duplicates by sound, in both languages. DET’s card tells applicants to “identify duplicates of the name entered in both English and Arabic by matching keyword search”. Search your core word on its own, then with common spellings. DET also keeps “the right to cancel or change the trade name if it is similar to an existing trade name” or breaks its conditions, even after reservation.

The activity is added to your Dubai trade name

DET adds the primary activity to the trade name, and the name cannot be the activity alone. So if your activity is “IT network services”, your licence may read “Falcon Peak IT Network Services LLC”. Plan the length: a long core name plus a long activity plus the suffix produces an unwieldy name on invoices, cheques, bank records and every government file. Short core names travel better.

Franchise names as a Dubai trade name

DET’s card allows a company to use the trade name of another company that granted it franchise rights, on submitting the franchise contract to DET. If you are opening a franchised outlet, bring the signed franchise agreement and, ideally, the franchisor’s UAE trademark certificate. The fee band for a trademark or foreign name still applies.

Every Dubai trade name ends with the legal form of the business. u.ae lists “LLC, EST, PJSC, PrJSC” as examples, and the Commercial Companies Law sets the wording for each company type. The suffix is not decoration: Article 13 of the law requires company documents to show the name and legal form, and Article 72(2) makes LLC managers who break the naming rule jointly liable in their own assets for the company’s obligations.

If you later convert the business, for example from a sole establishment to an LLC, the suffix changes and so does everything printed with it. That is a licence amendment, covered in our trade licence amendment guide. For choosing the form itself, see types of companies in Dubai.

Trade name registration Dubai fees: standard and special names

DET’s fees are set by Dubai Executive Council Resolution No. 13 of 2011, Schedule 1, which we read on the Dubai Legislation Portal on 25 September 2026. Four items cover the name itself.

ItemResolution 13/2011 wording (short)AEDDET’s service card calls it
5Reservation of a trade name200Ordinary name
6Trade name indicative of a neighbourhood or trademark, or Arabised trade name1,000“Premium trade name category B” (trademark, Arabised name or region)
7Trade name (foreign / numeric)2,000“Premium trade name category A” (foreign words)
8Trade name featuring “Dubai”, “Emirates” or “Gulf”, or acronyms such as A.B2,000“Premium trade name category A” (Gulf, abbreviations)

The special-name fees are charged on top of the trade name reservation. DET’s licence issue card lists “Foreign trade name fees: from AED 1000 to AED 3000”, which matches a name that falls in both special bands (AED 1,000 plus AED 2,000). A name like “ABC Emirates Trading LLC” is an acronym and uses “Emirates”; ask DET whether both item 8 triggers are charged once or twice before you commit, because the schedule does not say.

What a Dubai trade name reservation actually costs on the voucher

Resolution 13/2011 gives the trade name reservation as AED 200, but the voucher shows more. DET’s service card listed the fee as “Book or amend trade name fee: AED 600” plus AED 10 each for the Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams, a total of AED 620. Khaleej Times reported the same AED 620 for Dubai in 2024. The difference is service lines: DET’s licence card lists a AED 350 “trade name advertisement” and a AED 50 “service request form”, and AED 200 plus 350 plus 50 is AED 600. That breakdown is our reading; DET has not published it line by line.

Name in two special bandsA foreign name that includes a trademarkup to 3,620620 + up to 3,000 (DET licence card range)

Your DET voucher is final. Fees can change by resolution, DET applies discounts and incentive packages from time to time, and whether a word is “foreign” or “Arabised” is DET’s call on the application. The full voucher for a new licence, with the licence fee, commercial register, market fee and the rest, is set out in our mainland business setup cost guide.

Does the special name fee come back every year?

The official material points that way. DET’s licence renewal card said “The license renewal fee is the same as the issuance fee”, and the licence issue fees included the foreign trade name fee. On 21 May 2026 the Government of Dubai Media Office announced a “one-time full exemption” from several DET and Dubai Municipality fees, including “foreign trade name fees”, for named sectors (desert safari and camping operators, marina-related businesses, aviation-related activities, drone and fireworks companies and event management companies). An exemption for existing companies only makes sense for a fee that recurs. Check the renewal voucher for your own licence; our trade licence renewal guide shows where it appears.

The cheapest spelling of the same brand

If your brand is an English word, ask whether an Arabic name with an English transliteration would express it. An ordinary name avoids the AED 1,000 or AED 2,000 band at issue and, if the fee recurs, every renewal. Over five renewals, AED 2,000 a year adds up to more than the government lines for a skilled hire’s visa. You can still trade and advertise under your English brand, protected by a trademark, while the licence carries the ordinary trade name. Confirm with DET that your brand use matches the licence.

If your licence is in another emirate

Each emirate sets its own trade name rules and fees. Khaleej Times (30 September 2024) summarised them: in Sharjah AED 250 for a standard name, AED 1,250 translated and AED 2,250 foreign; in Ajman AED 350 standard and AED 2,000 a year for abbreviated, Gulf or foreign names; in Abu Dhabi a small reservation fee on TAMM. These are news summaries, not the emirates’ own pages, and this guide covers Dubai only. Free zones register company names under their own rules.

Trade name registration, Dubai: step by step on Invest in Dubai

The trade name reservation runs on Invest in Dubai, DET’s business platform, or at an authorised service centre such as a business registration centre. You need UAE PASS to log in online. DET’s service card lists one requirement, an identity card, and gives the service time as “10 minutes – Regular”.

  1. Prepare three to five names. Check each against the rules table above, and search your core word on the National Economic Register, which u.ae says lets you “search for the availability of trade names”.
  2. Log in to Invest in Dubai and choose to book a new trade name.
  3. Select the main business activity, then any additional activities. The primary activity will be added to the name.
  4. Search the name in English and Arabic and check availability. If the system flags a similar name, change the distinctive word, not just the spelling.
  5. Review the name details: English and Arabic versions, legal form, activity. Read the Arabic transliteration carefully, because it will appear on every Arabic document.
  6. Reserve and pay. DET’s card says the reservation fee “must be paid within 72 hours of the issuance of the payment authorization”. An unpaid reservation lapses.
  7. Download the trade name certificate. Diarise the trade name certificate’s expiry six months ahead.

Owners who are abroad can reserve through a representative: DET’s card lists public relations officers and company incorporation consultants among the service’s users. A trade name reservation holds the name only; the owners, their documents and any power of attorney are checked at initial approval and licence stage.

Pay attention to the Arabic

The English name is what you chose; the Arabic transliteration is what the law reads. Federal law requires the commercial register to hold the name “in both Arabic and English” (Cabinet Resolution 107/2022, Art. 2). If the transliteration is wrong, correct it before you pay, because fixing it after the licence is an amendment.

The Dubai trade name certificate and its six-month validity

The output of the trade name reservation is a trade name certificate (DET’s card calls it a “Trade Name Document”). Federal rules say a trade name reservation certificate “shall contain the name, legal form, and activity of the establishment” (Cabinet Resolution 107/2022, Art. 3(2)(a)). You will use the trade name certificate for:

  • the initial approval and the licence application, which must carry the name shown on the trade name certificate;
  • the lease: in practice landlords often draft the tenancy contract in the reserved company name before the licence exists;
  • the memorandum of association, which states the company’s name;
  • external approvals, where a regulator issues its approval in the company’s name;
  • preparing signage, stationery and a website, though we suggest waiting for the licence before printing.

How long a Dubai trade name reservation lasts

DET’s card: “The trade name is valid for a period of six months. In the event that the trade name certificate expires, the customer must reserve the trade name again and pay all fees.” It adds that the name “will be automatically canceled upon expiry of the reservation period if the name holder has not issued the trade license”. Gulf News reported the same six months in 2022, citing DET’s website. DET’s card does not describe an extension of a trade name reservation, so plan to issue the licence inside the six months, and if a regulator’s approval is slow, re-reserve before expiry rather than after.

After the licence issues, the name is protected as part of the licence for as long as the licence stays valid. If the licence expires and is not renewed, the name is at risk: DET may cancel names that break its conditions, and an expired licence also collects fines (see our expired trade licence guide).

Dubai trade name reservation lifecycle: reserve in about 10 minutes, pay within 72 hours, trade name certificate valid six months, licence voucher within 30 days, use the name in all dealings, yearly renewal, change by amendment, and trademark protection for ten years
The clocks around a Dubai trade name, from reservation to trademark. Blue steps are the name itself, pink the licence that uses it, navy later changes and brand protection.

Foreign brands, franchises, branches and other special cases

An English or international brand as your Dubai trade name

You can register an English brand as your Dubai trade name. DET transliterates it into Arabic, and it will usually be priced as a foreign name (AED 2,000 under item 7). If the brand is a registered trademark, the name may fall under item 6 instead or as well. Bring the UAE trademark certificate if you have one; if the brand belongs to someone else, DET’s card says known brands cannot be used, so you need the owner’s written authority.

A franchised outlet

A company can use the trade name of the company that granted it franchise rights by submitting the franchise contract to DET. Check that the contract names the Dubai company, covers Dubai and runs longer than the licence year, and that the franchisor’s mark is registered in the UAE. If the franchise ends, the name has to change.

A branch of a foreign, UAE or free zone company

A branch usually carries its parent’s name, and DET asks for the parent’s documents: a board resolution to open the branch and, for foreign parents, legalised and attested constitutional documents. The parent’s name is often foreign, so expect the foreign-name band. The route is in our branch of a foreign company guide.

Professional firms

Consultancies, engineering offices and other professional licences often want the founder’s name in the firm name. That is allowed with first and family name together. A local service agent represents the business without owning it, so in practice the agent’s name is not part of the firm name. See our professional licence guide and local service agent guide.

Numbers, abbreviations and short special names

“360”, “A1”, “JKT”: all possible, all in the AED 2,000 band (items 7 and 8). If the abbreviation stands for words, registering the full words as the trade name and using the abbreviation as your brand is usually cheaper.

Names with “Dubai”, “Emirates” or “Gulf”

These words are permitted in a Dubai trade name but priced at AED 2,000 (item 8). They also invite questions about whether the name suggests an official link. A name that implies government backing will be refused under u.ae’s rule on “governing authority”.

Changing a trade name after the licence is issued

Changing a Dubai trade name is a licence amendment. DET’s amendment card lists “Amend trade name” among the modifications, with a new or amended trade name booking first. The government lines, from DET’s cards and Resolution 13/2011:

LineAEDSource
Book the new trade name (“book or amend trade name”)600 + 10 + 10, plus any special-name feeDET trade name card; Res. 13/2011, items 5 to 8
Amend the licence (“variation of licence details”)500 per variation + 10 + 10Res. 13/2011, item 2; DET amendment card

Memorandum of association addendum, where the company has oneNotary fees by value and signaturesDET amendment card; Executive Council Resolution 4/2014
New facade name-board permit350Res. 13/2011, item 60

The DET part is the easy part. After the licence shows the new name, every other record must follow:

  • Dubai Chambers membership details.
  • GDRFA immigration establishment card and the MOHRE establishment card, so visas and work permits print the new name. See our establishment card guide.
  • Ejari and the lease, if the landlord will update the tenant name.
  • The bank, which will ask for the amended licence and MoA addendum.
  • EmaraTax registrations for corporate tax and VAT; see our corporate tax registration guide.
  • Beneficial owner records held with DET, if anything else changed at the same time; see our UBO register guide.
  • Contracts, invoices, signage, website and trademark filings. The law expects the name you trade under to be the licensed one (Law 13/2011, Art. 19; Commercial Transactions Law, Art. 56).

The full amendment route, with other changes you might combine to pay once, is in our trade licence amendment guide.

Trade name vs trademark in the UAE

The most expensive naming mistake is believing that a registered trade name protects a brand. It gives you less than that. Article 55 of the Commercial Transactions Law protects a registered name against another merchant using it “for his trade which is of a similar kind”. A trademark protects a sign for the goods and services it covers, across the UAE, for ten years at a time, and it can be enforced against anyone.

Trademark fees and timing at the Ministry

The Ministry’s “Register Trademark” card lists AED 750 for examination (AED 2,250 for expedited examination in one business day), AED 750 for publication and AED 5,000 for registration. Late payment of the publication fee costs AED 100 a month (maximum AED 1,000 a year) and of the registration fee AED 1,000 a month (maximum AED 10,000 a year). Foreign owners apply through a registered trademark agent with a notarised, translated power of attorney. Renewal is in the tenth year: AED 750 publication and AED 5,750, or AED 6,500 in the six months after expiry.

Trade name registration (Dubai) or trademark: which comes first?

Both, early. The trade name is quick and cheap, and you need it to get licensed. The trademark takes weeks and costs more, and it is the main tool that stops a competitor using your brand in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or a free zone. An individual founder in the UAE can file a trademark before the company exists, using personal ID, and later license or assign it to the company. Take advice from a trademark agent or lawyer on classes and ownership; MIRDXB PRO does not file trademarks.

Trade name registration Dubai mistakes: what goes wrong

  • The trade name certificate lapses. The name is reserved, then the lease, a regulator’s approval or a partner’s attested documents take longer than six months. The name is cancelled and someone else can take it. Diarise the date and re-reserve before it passes.
  • The name fits the brand, not the activity. “… Medical” on a general trading licence draws questions or a refusal. Choose the activity first, then the Dubai trade name.
  • A foreign name nobody priced. The founder budgets AED 620 and the voucher shows AED 2,620, possibly again at every renewal. Check the band before reserving.
  • A brand already registered as a trademark. DET accepts the trade name, but the owner of the trademark later objects to the signage or website. Search the trademark register before you print anything.
  • A partner’s name without a plan. The firm carries a partner’s full name; the partner leaves; the others must either get his consent to keep it or change the name. Write the answer into the memorandum.
  • A wrong Arabic transliteration. Missed at reservation, printed on the licence, the Chamber certificate and the establishment cards, and expensive to amend.
  • Trading under a different name. Invoices and a website in a shortened brand that does not match the licence. Law 13/2011 requires the licensed trade name “in all dealings with third parties”; use “trading as” wording only in line with DET’s advertising conditions.
  • A name change done only at DET. The licence shows the new name, but the establishment cards, bank and EmaraTax still show the old one, and the next visa or payment is rejected.

Worked cases

These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.

1. A technology consultancy with an English brand

Situation: Two founders want their English brand, a coined word, as the name of their Dubai LLC.

Assessment: The coined word is foreign, so the name falls in the AED 2,000 band on top of the AED 620 voucher lines, and the fee is likely to recur at renewal. The alternative was an Arabic name with the brand kept as a trademark. Outcome: the founders kept the English name because the brand mattered to their clients, budgeted the fee for five years, and filed the trademark with the Ministry (AED 6,500 in official fees) in the same month.

2. A family trading business using the family name

Situation: A father and son planned “Al [Family] Trading LLC”.

Assessment: DET does not accept a family name on its own. Outcome: the name was reserved with the father’s first name and the family name together, which passed as an ordinary name at AED 620, and the memorandum records that the name stays with the company if either partner leaves.

3. A restaurant whose certificate expired during approvals

Situation: A restaurant name was reserved in January; fit-out and food safety approvals ran past July.

Assessment: The trade name certificate had a six-month life and DET does not describe an extension. Outcome: the name was re-reserved a week before expiry, paying the reservation again, which was cheaper than losing it. The lesson: for regulated activities, reserve the name when the premises are secured, not when the idea is born.

4. A holding company with an acronym as its special name

Situation: An investor wanted a three-letter acronym plus “Holding”.

Assessment: Acronyms sit in item 8, AED 2,000. Spelling out the words the letters stood for gave an English name, which is priced as a foreign name anyway. Outcome: the investor kept the acronym, because either version cost the same, and used the full words as a tagline.

5. A company changing its name after a rebrand

Situation: A three-year-old LLC with 12 staff rebranded.

Assessment: New reservation (AED 620 plus the foreign band), licence amendment (AED 500), announcement (AED 500), MoA addendum at the notary, new name-board permit (AED 350), then Dubai Chambers, GDRFA and MOHRE establishment cards, the bank, EmaraTax and the trademark. Outcome: the change was timed with the licence renewal so the new name appeared on the renewed licence, and the other files were updated in one planned sequence.

Dubai trade name rules: where the official sources are silent or disagree

PointWhat the sources sayHow we handle it
Live DET service cardInvest in Dubai’s “Request to book a trade name” page showed only its description on 25 September 2026; the full card (rules, AED 600 + 10 + 10, six months, 72 hours) is DET’s archived September 2021 versionWe rely on the archived card where later reports (Gulf News 2022, Khaleej Times 2024) agree with it, and treat the voucher as final
Trade name reservation feeResolution 13/2011: AED 200. DET card: AED 600 “book or amend” + 10 + 10. Khaleej Times 2024: AED 620. Gulf News 2022: “approximately Dh1,000”We budget AED 620 for an ordinary name and explain the gap as service lines (our reading)
Double special bandsThe schedule lists items 6, 7 and 8 separately; DET’s licence card gives a range of AED 1,000 to 3,000We tell clients a name can cost up to AED 3,000 extra and ask DET in borderline cases
Special-name fee at renewalNot stated in the schedule; DET’s renewal card says renewal equals issue; the May 2026 exemption treats it as recurringWe budget it every year until the voucher shows otherwise
Extension of a trade name reservationDET’s card says to reserve again and pay all fees after expiry; it does not describe an extensionRe-reserve before expiry

Dubai trade name myths: what circulates online that is not true

What circulatesThe position
“Registering a trade name protects my brand in the UAE”It protects the licensed name against a similar name in similar trade. Brand protection across the UAE is a trademark with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism
“A trade name reservation lasts a year”DET’s card says six months, then automatic cancellation if no licence is issued
“English names are banned”They are allowed, transliterated into Arabic, and usually priced as foreign names
“Using ‘Dubai’ in the name is prohibited”It is permitted and priced at AED 2,000 (Resolution 13/2011, item 8), as long as it does not suggest a government link
“I can use my surname as the company name”Not on its own; DET wants the first name and family name together
“The trade name costs AED 200”That is the schedule line; the voucher for an ordinary name has been AED 620 with service lines and the two Dirhams
“If my trademark is registered I can use it as a trade name for free”A trademark in the name is item 6, AED 1,000, and may also be a foreign name
“Changing the name is just a new certificate”It is a licence amendment with knock-on updates at MOHRE, GDRFA, Dubai Chambers, the bank and EmaraTax

What we will and will not do

We will check your names against DET’s rules and fee bands before you pay, handle the trade name reservation, carry it through the initial approval and licence, handle a change of name with all the files that follow, and tell you plainly when you can reserve the name yourself.

We will not promise that DET will accept a name, which is DET’s decision; reserve a name that copies someone else’s brand; describe your activity in a way that does not match your business to get a name through; or file or give legal advice on trademarks, which is work for a registered trademark agent or lawyer.

Ready to reserve your Dubai trade name, or to change one? Send us the name and your activity. We confirm the fee band and our fee in writing, reserve it when you approve, and diarise the trade name certificate’s six months.

Reserve my trade name

Trade name registration Dubai: frequently asked questions

How do I register a trade name in Dubai?

Trade name registration (Dubai) runs on Invest in Dubai: log in with UAE PASS, choose to book a new trade name, select your main activity, search the name in English and Arabic, review the transliteration and legal form, reserve, and pay within 72 hours of the payment authorisation. DET issues a trade name certificate valid for six months. You can also apply at an authorised DET service centre with your identity card.

How much does trade name registration (Dubai) cost?

Resolution 13/2011 sets the reservation at AED 200. DET’s service card showed AED 600 for booking or amending a trade name plus AED 10 each for the Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams, AED 620 in total, the figure Khaleej Times also reported. Special names add AED 1,000 (neighbourhood, trademark, Arabised) or AED 2,000 (foreign, numeric, acronyms, “Dubai”, “Emirates”, “Gulf”). The voucher is final.

How long is a Dubai trade name reservation valid?

Six months. DET’s service card says the name is cancelled automatically at the end of the reservation period if no trade licence has been issued, and that after expiry you must reserve again and pay all fees. It does not describe an extension, so if approvals are slow, re-reserve before the date rather than after it lapses.

Can I use an English name as my Dubai trade name?

Yes. DET transliterates the name into Arabic rather than translating it, so both versions sound the same. A foreign-language name is usually priced as a special name, AED 2,000 on top of the reservation under Resolution 13/2011, item 7. If cost matters, an Arabic name with an English transliteration avoids that band while you keep your English brand for marketing.

Which words are not allowed in a Dubai trade name?

God’s names and attributes, names of religions and sects, government bodies and their logos, obscene or immodest words, brands and establishments that are not yours, and a family name on its own. Names cannot start with “Universal”, “Middle East” or “International”. Country, capital and government names need that country’s embassy approval. Symbols and special characters are not allowed.

Can I use my family name as my company name?

Only with a first name. DET’s own example is “Ahmed Al-Ghamdi Properties” rather than “Al-Ghamdi Properties”. The Commercial Transactions Law also says an individual merchant’s trade name consists of the given name and surname. If a named partner may leave one day, agree in the memorandum whether the company keeps the name.

What legal-form suffix does my trade name need?

The name must end with the legal form. An LLC uses “Limited Liability Company” or “LLC”; a single-owner LLC uses the one person company wording in Article 72 of Decree-Law 32/2021; a sole establishment uses “EST”; joint stock companies use “PJSC” or “PrJSC”. Managers who ignore the naming rule can be personally liable for the company’s obligations under Article 72(2).

Is a trade name the same as a trademark?

No. DET registers the trade name so you can be licensed and trade under it in Dubai; it protects that name against a similar one in similar trade. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism registers trademarks, which protect a brand for listed goods and services across the UAE for ten years. Official trademark fees are AED 750 plus AED 750 plus AED 5,000.

Can I reserve a trade name before the initial approval?

Yes. DET’s service card says trade name reservation can happen before or after the initial approval, and the initial approval card says the same. Most founders reserve the name first. Choose the main activity before you search, because DET adds the primary activity to the name and the name must fit the activity.

How do I change my company’s trade name in Dubai?

Book the new name, then apply for a licence amendment. Expect the new booking (AED 620 plus any special-name fee), AED 500 for the licence variation, AED 500 for the announcement and a memorandum addendum at the notary. Then update Dubai Chambers, the GDRFA and MOHRE establishment cards, the bank, EmaraTax, Ejari, signage and contracts so every record shows the new name.

Can two companies have the same trade name in the UAE?

Not in the same register for similar trade: DET refuses duplicates and similar-sounding names, and federal law protects a registered name against a similar name in similar trade. Each emirate and free zone keeps its own register, though, so the same name can exist elsewhere. A trademark with the Ministry is what gives UAE-wide protection for a brand.

Do I pay the foreign trade name fee every year?

Budget for it. The schedule does not say, but DET’s renewal card states that renewal fees equal issue fees, and in May 2026 Dubai gave named sectors a one-time exemption from foreign trade name fees, which only makes sense for a recurring charge. Your renewal voucher shows the actual lines for your licence.

Can MIRDXB PRO handle trade name registration in Dubai for me?

Yes. Send us your shortlist, activity and legal form on WhatsApp. We check each name against DET’s rules, tell you its fee band and our fee in writing, reserve the name you choose, and diarise the six months. If you want, we then run the initial approval, Ejari, memorandum and licence so the name is used before it lapses.

How much does MIRDXB PRO charge for a trade name?

Government fees are passed on at cost on DET’s voucher. Our own fee depends on whether we only check and reserve the name or carry it through the full licence, and on how many names you want screened. We quote it in writing before we start, and we tell you if your name is simple enough to reserve yourself.

Reserving names, amending licences and keeping the establishment cards and visas in line with them is what our PRO services in Dubai team handles.
