Key takeaways
- Visa cancellation without sponsor (UAE) is possible, but not in one step. An employment visa is really two files: the MOHRE work permit and the residence visa held by GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (the other emirates). The work permit has to be closed first, and that is where the route without the sponsor starts.
- The official starting point is a MOHRE complaint asking for work permit cancellation without the employer’s consent. Under Article 5 of Ministerial Resolution No. 47 of 2022, if MOHRE cannot reach the employer within 5 working days (extendable by another 5), work permit cancellation goes ahead at the worker’s request. The exception is where the employer shows the worker is under investigation for a work-related crime. A fictitious establishment is cancelled on the worker’s request as well.
- If the dispute goes to court, the work permit is cancelled 6 months after referral at the latest (Article 4), and you can ask for work permit cancellation within 14 days of a final judgment.
- Then the residence. In Dubai, GDRFA’s cancellation service lists sponsored persons as applicants and needs the MOHRE cancellation extract. Fees are AED 100 + AED 10 + AED 10. ICP, for the other emirates, has an “exceptional cancellation” (AED 100 line) for cases “such as the presence of disputes or in the event of the guarantor’s death.”
- If the company has closed, the law treats the contract as ended (Decree-Law 33/2021, Article 42(7)). Your wages and gratuity remain due, and the workers’ protection insurance can pay up to AED 20,000 on a MOHRE decision or court ruling.
- You can do all of this from outside the UAE through a power of attorney. The Ministry of Justice issues digital POAs to people inside or outside the country.
- Do not wait. After the residence cancellation you have a grace period (30 to 180 days depending on category at ICP; 60 days on GDRFA’s card). After that, overstay is AED 50 per day.
Visa cancellation without sponsor (UAE) means closing your MOHRE work permit and your residence visa when the employer who sponsors you cannot or will not do it. That could be because they stopped answering, left the country, closed the company, or died. The UAE government portal states the starting position plainly: “Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa. You cannot process the application on your own.” The word that matters is normally. The law provides a route for when the sponsor is missing, and this guide sets it out step by step, from official sources.
It covers:
- the MOHRE complaint that starts it, and the court route if it goes further;
- the residence cancellation at GDRFA and ICP, what the company’s closure changes, and how to protect yourself from an absconding report;
- how to do all of it from abroad under a power of attorney;
- worked cases, an infographic, the fees, and the questions people in this position ask us most.
Visa cancellation without sponsor (UAE): find your situation
Start here. Find the row that matches you. The rest of the guide explains each route in full.
| Your situation | Where it starts | What closes the residence |
|---|---|---|
| Employer is not answering but the company still exists | MOHRE complaint asking for work permit cancellation without the employer’s consent (MR 47/2022, Art. 5) | GDRFA residence cancellation (Dubai) or ICP exceptional cancellation (other emirates), using the MOHRE cancellation |
| Employer refuses to cancel until you sign away your dues | MOHRE complaint. The visa cancellation and your entitlements are separate issues. | As above |
| Company has closed or the owner has disappeared | MOHRE complaint. Closure ends the contract (Decree-Law 33/2021, Art. 42(7)), and a fictitious or unreachable establishment is covered by Art. 5. | As above. Wages can also be claimed from the workers’ protection insurance. |
| Dispute has gone to the labour court | Court case. Permit cancelled at your request within 14 days of final judgment, or 6 months after referral (MR 47/2022, Arts. 3 and 4). | GDRFA or ICP, with the MOHRE cancellation |
| Sponsor has died | MOHRE, for the work permit | ICP lists the guarantor’s death as a ground for exceptional cancellation. In Dubai, GDRFA handles it. |
| You are already outside the UAE | Any of the above, filed by a representative under power of attorney | GDRFA outside-country residence cancellation (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates) |
| Employer filed an absconding report against you | MOHRE: ask for the report to be cancelled on the grounds in MR 47/2022, Art. 7 | After the report is cleared |
Why “only the sponsor can cancel”, and why it is not the end of the story
An employment visa in the UAE is not one document. It is two linked files, held by two different authorities.
| File | Held by | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit (labour card, employment contract) | MOHRE, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (mainland employers) | Your right to work for this employer, and whether you can move to another |
| Residence visa | GDRFA Dubai (Dubai-issued) or ICP (other emirates) | Your right to live in the UAE, your Emirates ID, and your family’s visas if you sponsor them |
In the normal process, the employer does both. The UAE government portal says the employer first applies to MOHRE to cancel the labour contract and card, and “the employee must also sign this application.” The employer then applies to ICP (or GDRFA in Dubai) to cancel the residence. The company must also give MOHRE a letter confirming the employee received all wages and end-of-service benefits.
That is why a missing sponsor is such a problem. Every step assumes the sponsor is there to start it. But the law does not leave you trapped:
- MOHRE can cancel the work permit without the employer on the worker’s complaint (MR 47/2022, Art. 5), or as a result of a labour case (Arts. 3 and 4).
- GDRFA’s cancellation service names “sponsored persons” as applicants, provided MOHRE’s cancellation exists.
- ICP accepts an “exceptional cancellation” where there is a dispute or the guarantor has died.
The residence authorities work from the MOHRE position. GDRFA’s service card lists “a cancellation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation” as its condition. So the question is never “how do I get immigration to cancel my visa?” It is “how do I get the work permit closed without my employer?” Once that is done, the residence follows.
Visa cancellation without sponsor: our service
This is the kind of file we are asked to take on most often: the sponsor has gone quiet, the company is closed, or the person has already left the UAE and cannot come back to sort it out. MIRDXB PRO handles complex visa cancellations for people inside and outside the UAE. We represent you under power of attorney at MOHRE, at GDRFA in Dubai, and at ICP in the rest of the UAE.
What we do
- Diagnose the file first. We check your work permit status, your residence validity, whether an absconding report exists, and whether the establishment is active, closed or blocked. Your route depends on these answers.
- Prepare and file the MOHRE complaint asking for work permit cancellation without the employer’s consent. We make sure it is set out properly, with your contract, salary records and proof that the employer cannot be reached.
- Follow it through the 5 + 5 working-day window and any amicable-settlement stage. If the matter goes to court, we coordinate with your lawyer.
- Complete the residence visa cancellation at GDRFA (Dubai) or through ICP’s exceptional cancellation (other emirates) once the work permit is closed.
- Handle dependants in the right order, so a spouse’s and children’s visas are not left hanging.
- Work from abroad for you. If you are outside the UAE, we guide you through a power of attorney, then act on your behalf so you do not need to fly back.
- Keep your entitlements separate. The visa cancellation is not traded against your wages or gratuity. The two are handled separately.
What it costs
Government fees are passed on at cost. The published figures are set out in the fee table later in this guide. Our service fee depends on the route and on whether you are inside or outside the UAE. We quote it in writing, before we start, once we have seen your documents.
A real case from our files: residence cancelled from abroad, September 2026
A client from Thailand had left the UAE, and her sponsor had stopped responding. She had managed to close the MOHRE side herself, but the residence cancellation at GDRFA was stuck, and without it she could not move forward.
Our team took over the immigration step. GDRFA issued the Cancel Residence Outside UAE letter on 21 September 2026, with the file permanently closed for the reason “out of country”, and she arrived in Dubai the next day. She later left a review on our Google Business Profile.

- The MOHRE work permit and the GDRFA residence are two separate files. Closing one does not close the other.
- GDRFA can cancel a residence while the holder is outside the UAE (close type “Out of Country”), so you do not have to fly back to finish it.
- Once the MOHRE side is closed, the residence step can be completed without the sponsor, as set out in Step 2 below.
Step 0: diagnose your file before you do anything
Most mistakes in these cases come from acting before knowing the position. Establish five facts first:
- Is your work permit still active? Check through MOHRE’s website or app enquiry, or the MOHRE call centre on 600590000.
- Is your residence still valid, and which emirate issued it? Check the GDRFA or ICP app. The first digit of the residence file number shows the emirate: 2 for Dubai, 1 for Abu Dhabi, 3 for Sharjah, and so on.
- Has an absconding (work abandonment) report been filed against you? See our guide to checking for an absconding case.
- Is the company still licensed and active? A company that has stopped operating but not closed is a different case from one whose licence has been cancelled.
- Do you sponsor family members? Their visas depend on yours, and they have to be dealt with first.
Write the answers down with dates. They decide your route, and they will be asked for at every stage.
Visa cancellation without sponsor: the first seven days
What you do in the first week after the sponsor goes quiet decides how smooth the visa cancellation is later. This is the order we recommend.
- Put your request in writing, with a date. Email or message the employer asking for your work permit cancellation and residence cancellation, and for your final settlement. Keep the sent message and any delivery or read receipt. This is your first piece of evidence that the sponsor was asked and did not respond.
- Save your records now. Download or photograph your contract, offer letter, payslips, WPS salary credits and any HR messages. If the company closes its systems or its office, these copies may be the only evidence you have.
- Check your status on MOHRE and GDRFA or ICP (see Step 0), including whether an absconding report exists.
- Stay reachable and, if you are still employed, do not simply stop attending. An unexplained absence of more than 7 consecutive days is what an absconding report is built on (MR 47/2022, Art. 6). If you intend to leave because the employer is in breach, the Labour Law sets a route. Under Article 45 of Decree-Law 33/2021, a worker may leave without notice where the employer breaches its obligations and the breach is not remedied, after notifying MOHRE 14 working days in advance.
- File the MOHRE complaint as soon as it is clear the employer will not act. Ask expressly for work permit cancellation without the employer’s consent, and list any unpaid amounts separately.
- Plan your next status. Your grace period begins once the residence is cancelled. Decide now whether you are moving to a new job, onto a family visa, or leaving, so the time is not wasted.
- Tell your family’s schools, landlord and bank what is happening, if your family’s visas depend on yours. A visa cancellation affects more than you.
Route 1: work permit cancellation through a MOHRE complaint, without the employer
This is the core of visa cancellation without sponsor for mainland employees, and the step that makes every later visa cancellation possible. It is set out in Ministerial Resolution No. 47 of 2022 on labour dispute and complaint procedures, Article 5, which deals with a worker’s complaint requesting cancellation of the work permit without the consent of the employer.
What Article 5 says
| Clause | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Fictitious employer | If MOHRE finds the worker is registered with a fictitious employer or establishment, cancellation proceeds at the worker’s request, and legal action is taken. |
| Employer cannot be reached | MOHRE tries to contact the employer within five working days of the complaint being registered. If it cannot, or the employer asks for time, five more working days may be given. Cancellation then goes ahead, unless the employer shows the worker is under investigation by the authorities for a work-related crime. |
| Your residence status | Once MOHRE confirms the work permit cancellation, the worker must change their residency status within the period allowed by law. This is the grace period covered below. |
| Fines | Any fines for delay in issuing or renewing the work permit are transferred to the establishment’s file, not yours. |
| Postponement | Where a labour case is before the court, MOHRE may postpone the cancellation decision in three situations: a claim of job abandonment during probation where the employer had not breached the worker’s rights, an absence report found to be accurate, or the worker not meeting their contractual obligations. |
This clause turns “my sponsor will not answer” from a dead end into a process with a timetable. The employer’s silence does not block you. Once MOHRE has tried to reach them and they have not responded, the Ministry can act on your request alone.
How to file the complaint
- Channels. MOHRE’s labour complaint service for private-sector employees is available through the MOHRE app, the website and service centres. The call centre is 600590000. The service page lists no fee.
- What you state. Say clearly that you are asking for your work permit to be cancelled because the employer cannot be reached, has closed, or refuses to cancel. Add any wage or gratuity claims as separate items.
- What you attach. Your contract or offer letter, passport and Emirates ID, recent salary slips or bank statements, and evidence of your attempts to reach the employer: emails, WhatsApp messages, registered letters, with dates.
- Timing. MOHRE’s FAQ says a complaint can be filed within 30 days of the breach, and that the Ministry settles it or refers it to the judiciary within 14 days. File as soon as the employer has stopped responding. Do not wait to see if they reappear.
- Keep the complaint number. Every later step, including the residence cancellation, depends on being able to show what MOHRE has decided.
What happens next
- If the employer does not respond within 5 (+5) working days, MOHRE can cancel the permit at your request.
- If the employer responds, MOHRE tries an amicable settlement. Under the Labour Law as amended in 2023, MOHRE can issue a final decision on claims up to AED 50,000, which is enforceable. Since the 2024 amendment, either side can challenge it before the Court of First Instance within 15 working days.
- If it cannot be settled, the complaint is referred to the labour court. That is Route 2.
Our separate guide to filing a MoHRE labour complaint covers the complaint process in general. This guide covers what that process does for your visa.
Route 2: when the dispute goes to the labour court
If MOHRE cannot settle the complaint and refers it to court, MR 47/2022 sets out what happens to the work permit.
| Rule | What it means for you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Register the case with the court within 14 days of the referral | Miss this and the referral lapses | MR 47/2022, Art. 3(a) |
| Do not work for another employer without a temporary work permit from MOHRE | You can apply for one while the case runs, unless your employer has filed a work abandonment report against you | Art. 3(b) and 3(d) |
| Ask for cancellation of the original permit within 14 days of a final judgment | The judgment ends the case, but you still have to ask for the cancellation | Art. 3(c) |
| If the complaint means you have stopped working, the permit is cancelled 6 months after referral to the court | A long court case does not keep you tied to the employer indefinitely | Art. 4 |
Claims under the Labour Law now have a limitation period of two years from the end of the employment relationship (Article 54 of Decree-Law 33/2021 as amended in 2024). The visa side does not wait that long. Deal with the permit and residence first, and pursue the money in parallel.
Unpaid wages and visa cancellation: handle both, separately
In most of these cases, the visa cancellation is not the only problem. Salary is late, or gratuity has not been paid. The two must be handled in parallel but kept separate.
- Do not trade one for the other. An employer who says “sign that you received everything and we will cancel your visa” is combining two obligations the law keeps apart. Wages and entitlements are due within 14 days of the end of the contract (Article 53).
- Put both in the same MOHRE complaint, as separate items: the request for work permit cancellation, and each amount you are owed.
- Claims up to AED 50,000 can be decided by MOHRE directly, and the decision is enforceable. Larger or disputed claims go to court. The limitation period for Labour Law claims is two years from the end of employment.
- If the company has collapsed, a MOHRE decision or court ruling is also what unlocks the workers’ protection insurance, up to AED 20,000.
For the salary side in detail, see our guides to salary not paid in the UAE and end of service gratuity.
Step 2: residence visa cancellation in Dubai (GDRFA)
Once MOHRE has confirmed the work permit cancellation, the residence visa cancellation can follow. For a Dubai-issued residence, the service is GDRFA’s “Cancellation of all types of residence permits”.
| Field | GDRFA’s published position |
|---|---|
| Who can apply | Individuals with residence permits in Dubai: sponsors and sponsored persons |
| Condition | “A cancellation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation” |
| Documents | Sponsor’s passport; sponsored person’s passport; MOHRE work permit cancellation extract (private sector) |
| Fees on the service card | AED 100 cancellation + AED 10 Knowledge Dirham + AED 10 Innovation Dirham |
| Channels | GDRFA website and app (24/7) and Amer centres |
| Completion | 48 hours |
| Grace period stated | 60 days after cancellation or expiry |
GDRFA’s FAQ gives fuller totals for the whole transaction:
- Inside the UAE: AED 190 plus Amer fees (individual sponsor) or AED 225 (company).
- Outside the UAE: AED 290 plus Amer fees (individual sponsor) or AED 325 (company). The sponsored person’s original passport is needed where the residence is valid and the stay abroad is under six months.
GDRFA’s document list includes the sponsor’s passport, and its FAQ lists the sponsor’s original passport and Emirates ID. When the sponsor has vanished, you will not have them. This is exactly where the MOHRE work permit cancellation, your complaint record and, where relevant, a court document carry the file. In practice, a visa cancellation without sponsor in Dubai is handled on the strength of those documents at Amer or GDRFA, and it is where experienced representation makes the difference. GDRFA does not publish a separate “without sponsor” service card, so we do not pretend it does.
Step 2: residence visa cancellation in the other emirates (ICP exceptional cancellation)
For residences issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, ICP’s “Cancellation of Residency Permits” service includes a route designed for this situation.
| Field | ICP’s published position |
|---|---|
| Exceptional cancellation | “The request is accepted if it is based on exceptional circumstances such as the presence of disputes or in the event of the guarantor’s death” |
| Fee lines | Application AED 50; smart services AED 100; exceptional residence cancellation AED 100 |
| Family rule | Family members sponsored by a foreign worker must be cancelled before the sponsor; a sponsor cancelling without first cancelling family pays a AED 5,000 guarantee (plus AED 20 deposit fee) |
| Documents | Passport (plus licence cancellation or death certificate for investors and partners) |
| Channels | ICP website and app (UAE Pass) |
| Completion | 2 days |
ICP does not publish which evidence it wants for an exceptional cancellation. In a dispute case, the natural evidence is the MOHRE complaint and cancellation, or a court document. Put the whole story in the application: who the sponsor is, what has happened, when, and what MOHRE has done.
Visa cancellation when the company has closed
A closed company is the situation people fear most, because there is no one left to sign anything. The law is clearer here than many people expect.
The contract ends
Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (the Labour Law) lists, among the causes that end an employment contract, that “the Establishment is closed permanently, in accordance with the legislation in force” (Article 42(7)). And under Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, Article 27, a worker whose contract has ended may move to another employer.
Your money is still owed
- Wages and entitlements are due within 14 days of the contract ending (Decree-Law 33/2021, Article 53).
- Repatriation costs are the employer’s responsibility, unless you join another employer (Article 13(12)).
- The workers’ protection insurance (Ministerial Resolution No. 318 of 2022) covers up to AED 20,000: the wages of the last 120 working days, end-of-service gratuity, and the cost of returning home. It pays when the employer defaults, based on a ministry decision or labour court ruling. That is another reason to file the MOHRE complaint promptly.
Why a closed company cannot simply walk away
GDRFA’s service for cancelling an establishment card has a condition: no sponsored persons may remain on the establishment card when it is cancelled. A company that closes properly has to cancel or transfer every visa first. See our guide to company liquidation and visa cancellation. When an owner abandons the business instead, the employees are left on the file, and that is the case Article 5 of MR 47/2022 exists for: an employer who cannot be reached, or an establishment that turns out to be fictitious.
Each person should file their own complaint. Several complaints from one establishment tell MOHRE something a single complaint does not, and each worker’s visa cancellation and entitlements are decided on their own file.
Visa cancellation when the sponsor has died
- The Labour Law ends the contract on the death of the employer where the contract depended on the employer personally (Decree-Law 33/2021, Article 42(4)). A company does not die with its owner, so for most company employees the establishment continues and its managers or heirs must act.
- ICP names the guarantor’s death as a ground for exceptional cancellation.
- Where nobody takes responsibility for the file, the MOHRE complaint route above still applies.
Absconding reports: the risk to manage while you wait
An employer who is in dispute with you may file a work abandonment (absconding) report. You need to know what it is and how to answer it.
| Rule | Source |
|---|---|
| An employer may report a worker absent without lawful reason for more than 7 consecutive days, where the employer does not know the worker’s whereabouts and cannot reach them | MR 47/2022, Art. 6 |
| MOHRE may cancel the report where: 7 days had not passed or the absence had a legitimate reason; the worker was present or on legal leave; the parties agreed to end the relationship or the employer allowed the worker to stop work; or any other reason shows the report is invalid | MR 47/2022, Art. 7 |
| If abandonment is proven, the worker cannot get a new work permit for one year. Exemptions include workers on family-sponsored residence, a new permit with the same employer, skilled workers and Golden Visa holders. | MR 47/2022, Art. 8; Cabinet Resolution 1/2022, Art. 28 |
| A worker reported absent cannot get a temporary work permit during a labour case | MR 47/2022, Art. 3(d) |
The best protection is a paper trail. Keep a record that you were available, and file your MOHRE complaint before the employer can claim you disappeared. If a report has already been filed, see our guides to absconding case removal and absconding and visa fines in Dubai.
Visa cancellation without sponsor from outside the UAE
Many people reading this have already left: the company closed, the salary stopped, and they went home. Their visa is still open in the UAE. Here is what that means and what can be done.
What happens to an uncancelled visa when you are abroad
- The residence lapses after 180 days abroad. Article 59 of Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022 treats a residence permit as void once the holder has stayed outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days. Investors and a few other categories are exempt.
- The MOHRE work permit may remain open. The residence lapsing does not close the labour file. An open work permit can stand in the way of a future work permit with a new employer.
- The file is not clean until both are closed. If you plan to come back to the UAE to work, sort it out now rather than when a new employer’s application is refused.
How it is done from abroad
You do not need to fly back. The MOHRE complaint, the work permit cancellation and the residence cancellation can all be handled by a representative in the UAE under a power of attorney.
- GDRFA (Dubai) publishes an outside-country residence cancellation: AED 290 plus Amer fees for an individual sponsor, AED 325 for a company, per its FAQ.
- ICP (other emirates) runs residence cancellation through its website and app. The exceptional cancellation route applies where there is a dispute.
Power of attorney: how we represent you at GDRFA and ICP
A power of attorney (POA) is what lets a PRO act for you when you cannot be present, or when you are outside the country. For these cases, it lets us file and follow your MOHRE complaint, submit the residence cancellation at GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates, sign the forms, and collect the documents.
How to issue one
| Where you are | How the POA is issued |
|---|---|
| Inside the UAE | Through the Ministry of Justice’s digital notary service or a notary public (in Dubai, the Dubai Courts notary). The MOJ describes its digital POA as issued in under 10 minutes, without visiting a notary office. |
| Outside the UAE | Through the MOJ’s digital POA service, which the Ministry says is open to customers “residing inside or outside the country”. Or sign before a notary abroad, then attest it through the UAE embassy or mission and have it attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. |
What the POA should cover
- Representing you before MOHRE, including filing and following labour complaints and requesting work permit cancellation.
- Representing you before GDRFA Dubai and/or ICP for residence cancellation and related transactions.
- Signing applications, paying fees and receiving documents on your behalf.
- Where relevant, your dependants’ files.
Keep it specific to what is needed, and keep a copy. A POA can be revoked when the matter is finished.
Moving to a new job instead of leaving
If your aim is to stay and work, visa cancellation is only half the question. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, Article 27, a worker may move to another employer where:
- the contract expired and was not renewed;
- the contract was terminated in line with Articles 42 or 45 of the Labour Law (Article 42 includes permanent closure of the establishment); or
- the employer terminated the contract for a reason not attributable to the worker.
While a labour case is running, MOHRE can issue a temporary work permit with a new employer (MR 47/2022, Art. 3(d)), unless you have been reported absent. Your new employer can apply for your permit once MOHRE has closed the old one.
Grace period and overstay fines after visa cancellation
| Authority | Grace period after cancellation | After the grace period |
|---|---|---|
| ICP (other emirates) | 180 days: Golden, Green and Blue holders, widows, divorced women, students after study, foreign relatives of UAE citizens. 90 days: skilled workers (levels 1 to 3) and property owners. 60 days: permits issued with a guarantor or host. 30 days: all other categories. | AED 50 per day |
| GDRFA (Dubai) | The cancellation service card states 60 days after cancellation or expiry | AED 50 per day (the standard rate on u.ae and ICP) |
MR 47/2022 requires a worker whose permit MOHRE has cancelled to change their residency status within the specified period. Plan the next step (a new job, a family visa or leaving) before the visa cancellation lands, not after. See our guide to UAE residence visa grace periods.
If you sponsor your family
- Dependants’ visas must be cancelled before the sponsor’s own. The UAE government portal and ICP both say so.
- At ICP, a sponsor cancelled without first cancelling the family triggers a AED 5,000 guarantee, or the family’s permits can be put on hold for a fee.
- If you plan to stay on a new job, the family can move to your new sponsorship, subject to the salary and housing conditions. See family residence visas in Dubai.
Visa cancellation without sponsor: fees at a glance

| GDRFA residence cancellation inside the UAE (FAQ total) | AED 190 + Amer fees (individual sponsor); AED 225 (company) | GDRFA FAQ |
| GDRFA residence cancellation outside the UAE (FAQ total) | AED 290 + Amer fees (individual sponsor); AED 325 (company) | GDRFA FAQ |
| ICP residency cancellation | Application AED 50 + smart services AED 100 | ICP |

- A power of attorney, if someone is acting for you
- Dependants’ passports and Emirates IDs, if you sponsor family
Visa cancellation without sponsor: five cases, worked through
These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.
1. Dubai sales executive, employer stopped answering after resignation
Resigned, served notice, then the employer went silent: no visa cancellation, no final settlement.
Route: MOHRE complaint asking for work permit cancellation without the employer’s consent, with the settlement claimed as a separate item. MOHRE could not reach the employer within the 5 + 5 working days, so the work permit was cancelled on the worker’s request. The Dubai residence was then cancelled through GDRFA using the MOHRE cancellation. The lesson: the visa cancellation and the money are separate, and neither should be held hostage to the other.
2. Sharjah construction workers, owner left the country
Wages two months late, office locked, owner abroad. Twelve workers on the establishment.
Route: each worker filed their own MOHRE complaint. The employer was unreachable, so MOHRE cancelled each permit under Article 5. Because the residences were Sharjah-issued, residence cancellation went through ICP’s exceptional cancellation on the ground of a dispute. The wage claims continued, and once a MOHRE decision was issued, the workers’ protection insurance became the route to payment (up to AED 20,000 each). The lesson: file together, but individually.
3. Accountant already back home, visa never cancelled
Company closed eight months earlier; she flew home without cancelling. Now she has a job offer in Abu Dhabi.
Position: her Dubai residence had lapsed after 180 days abroad, but the MOHRE work permit was still open, which would block the new employer’s application. Route: a digital power of attorney from abroad, then a MOHRE complaint filed by her representative, the work permit cancelled, and the residence file closed at GDRFA. The lesson: “it lapsed by itself” is only half true. The labour file needs closing.
4. Chef reported absent after asking for his salary
He asked for three months’ unpaid wages; days later the employer filed a work abandonment report.
Route: a MOHRE complaint for wages and work permit cancellation, and a request to cancel the report under Article 7. His messages showed he had been at work and had raised the salary issue before the report was filed. Once the report was cleared, the permit and residence were cancelled in the usual way. The lesson: the paper trail you keep in the first week decides the case.
5. Nurse whose sponsor, a sole proprietor, died
Her employer was an individually owned clinic; the owner died and nobody took over.
Position: the Labour Law ends the contract on the employer’s death where it depended on the employer personally (Article 42(4)). Route: MOHRE for the work permit, and ICP’s exceptional cancellation, which names the guarantor’s death as a ground, for her Ajman-issued residence. The lesson: the death of a sponsor is anticipated by the rules, so there is a route.
Special cases: domestic workers, partners and investors
Domestic workers
Domestic workers are not covered by the Labour Law route in this guide. Their employment is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 on domestic workers, and their permits and disputes are handled through MOHRE’s domestic worker services. The MR 47/2022 Article 5 route described above is for workers of private-sector establishments. If you are a domestic worker whose sponsor has disappeared, contact MOHRE on 600590000 and ask specifically about domestic worker disputes and cancellation.
Partners and investors
A partner or investor residence is not an employment visa, so the MOHRE complaint route does not fit it. ICP’s cancellation service lists, for investors and partners, a commercial licence cancellation certificate or a death certificate among the documents. If a co-partner is blocking the licence closure or amendment, the question is a company and commercial dispute first, and a visa cancellation second. That usually needs a lawyer as well as a PRO.
Free zone employees: a different route
If you work for a free zone company (for example in JAFZA, DMCC or DAFZA), your work permit is issued by the free zone authority, not MOHRE, and the Article 5 MOHRE route does not apply in the same way. Your first stop is the free zone authority’s employee services or complaints channel, then the residence authority. If the free zone company has been struck off or the owner has vanished, tell the free zone authority in writing and keep the correspondence.
What circulates online that is not true
| The claim | The position |
|---|---|
| “If your sponsor won’t cancel, nothing can be done” | MOHRE can cancel the work permit on your complaint when the employer cannot be reached (MR 47/2022, Art. 5). GDRFA and ICP then cancel the residence. |
| “Just leave; the visa cancels itself” | The residence lapses after 180 days abroad, but the MOHRE work permit can stay open and block you later |
| “You must sign the settlement before they cancel” | Cancellation and entitlements are separate. Wages are due within 14 days of the contract ending (Art. 53). |
| “A closed company means you lose your dues” | The dues remain owed, and the workers’ protection insurance covers up to AED 20,000 on a MOHRE decision or court ruling |
| “You have to be in the UAE to do this” | A representative can act for you under a power of attorney, and the MOJ issues digital POAs to people outside the country |
| “An absconding report can’t be removed” | MOHRE can cancel a report on the grounds in MR 47/2022, Art. 7 |
| “Overstay is AED 25 a day” | The current rate published by ICP and u.ae is AED 50 per day after the grace period |
| “Workers can switch jobs only with a NOC” | Cabinet Resolution 1/2022, Art. 27 lets a worker move when the contract has ended in the listed cases, including closure |

Before you pay anyone: five questions to ask a PRO
People in this situation are often under time pressure, and some are quoted large fees for vague promises. Ask these questions before paying for help with a visa cancellation without sponsor:
- Which route applies to my file, and why? The answer should name MOHRE, and then GDRFA or ICP, not “our contacts”.
- What are the government fees, and what is your fee? The two should be separate and in writing.
- What do you need from me, and what happens if I am abroad? For someone outside the UAE, the answer should include a power of attorney.
- What happens to my wages and gratuity claim? They should not be dropped to make the visa cancellation easier.
- What can you not guarantee? Anyone who guarantees a MOHRE or court outcome is promising something they do not control.
What we will and will not do
We will diagnose your file before charging you, take on the whole route (MOHRE, then GDRFA or ICP), represent you under power of attorney whether you are in the UAE or abroad, handle your family’s files in the right order, and tell you honestly when a case needs a lawyer rather than a PRO.
We will not promise an outcome MOHRE or a court decides, offer to “remove” a report for a fixed price without seeing the file, or advise you to leave the country without closing your file.

Visa cancellation without sponsor: frequently asked questions
Can I cancel my UAE visa without my sponsor?
Not by a direct application of your own. The UAE government portal says that normally only the sponsor can cancel. But there is an official route when the sponsor is missing. You file a MOHRE complaint asking for your work permit to be cancelled without the employer’s consent (Ministerial Resolution 47/2022, Article 5). Once MOHRE cancels it, the residence is cancelled at GDRFA (Dubai) or through ICP’s exceptional cancellation (other emirates).
My employer is not responding. How long does MOHRE wait?
MOHRE tries to contact the employer within 5 working days of your complaint being registered. If it cannot reach them, or the employer asks for time, 5 more working days may be given. Cancellation then goes ahead at your request, unless the employer shows you are under investigation for a work-related crime.
How do I cancel my visa if my company is closed?
Permanent closure ends the employment contract under Article 42(7) of Decree-Law 33/2021. File a MOHRE complaint asking for work permit cancellation, and include your wage and gratuity claims. An unreachable or fictitious establishment is covered by Article 5 of MR 47/2022. After MOHRE cancels the permit, cancel the residence at GDRFA or ICP. Unpaid dues can be claimed through the workers’ protection insurance, up to AED 20,000, on a MOHRE decision or court ruling.
My employer refuses to cancel my visa unless I sign that I received everything. What should I do?
Do not sign anything that is untrue. The visa cancellation and your entitlements are separate obligations, and wages and end-of-service benefits are due within 14 days of the contract ending (Article 53). File a MOHRE complaint for both the work permit cancellation and the unpaid amounts.
Can I cancel my visa from outside the UAE if my sponsor is not responding?
Yes, through a representative acting under a power of attorney. The Ministry of Justice issues digital POAs to people inside or outside the UAE. Your representative can file the MOHRE complaint and then the residence cancellation. GDRFA’s FAQ lists outside-country residence cancellation at AED 290 plus Amer fees (individual sponsor) or AED 325 (company).
If I stay outside the UAE for six months, is my visa cancelled automatically?
The residence is treated as void after more than 180 consecutive days outside the UAE (Cabinet Resolution 65/2022, Article 59). But the MOHRE work permit is a separate file and can stay open, which can block a future work permit. Close the labour file properly.
What does it cost to cancel a visa without the sponsor?
MOHRE’s labour complaint page lists no fee. GDRFA’s cancellation card lists AED 100 + AED 10 + AED 10, and its FAQ gives transaction totals of AED 190 (inside, individual sponsor) to AED 325 (outside, company) plus Amer fees. ICP lists AED 50 application, AED 100 smart services and AED 100 for exceptional cancellation. Service fees for representation are extra and should be quoted in writing.
What grace period do I get after the visa cancellation?
ICP publishes 30, 60, 90 or 180 days depending on category. For example, 60 days for permits issued with a guarantor or host, and 90 days for skilled workers (levels 1 to 3). GDRFA’s cancellation card states 60 days. After the grace period, overstay is AED 50 per day.
Can my employer file an absconding case against me while I am in dispute?
An employer may report a worker absent without lawful reason for more than 7 consecutive days where it cannot reach them (MR 47/2022, Article 6). MOHRE can cancel the report on grounds including a legitimate reason for absence, the worker being present, or an agreement to end the relationship (Article 7). Keep records that you were available, and file your own complaint early.
Can I work for a new employer while my case is ongoing?
During a labour case you can apply for a temporary work permit with a new employer. This is not available if your employer has filed a work abandonment report against you (MR 47/2022, Article 3(d)). Once the old permit is cancelled, the new employer applies for your permit in the usual way.
What happens to my wife and children’s visas?
Dependants’ visas must be cancelled before the sponsor’s own. At ICP, cancelling a sponsor without first cancelling the family triggers a AED 5,000 guarantee, or the family permits can be put on hold for a fee. If you are staying on a new job, the family can move to your new sponsorship.
My sponsor has died. Who cancels my visa?
ICP names the guarantor’s death as a ground for exceptional cancellation. Under the Labour Law, a contract ends on the employer’s death where it depended on the employer personally (Article 42(4)). For company employees the company usually continues, and its managers or heirs should act. If nobody does, the MOHRE complaint route applies.
How long does the whole process take?
On the Article 5 route, MOHRE’s contact window is 5 plus up to 5 working days. The residence cancellation takes 48 hours at GDRFA and 2 days at ICP once the work permit is closed. If the case goes to court, the work permit is cancelled at the latest 6 months after referral.
Can MIRDXB PRO cancel my visa if my sponsor is not responding?
Yes. We handle complex visa cancellations for people inside and outside the UAE. We represent you under power of attorney at MOHRE, at GDRFA in Dubai and at ICP in the other emirates. We check your file first, confirm the route and the cost in writing, then file and follow it to a clean result.
I work in a free zone. Does the MOHRE route apply?
Not in the same way. Free zone employees’ permits are issued by the free zone authority, so start with that authority’s employee services or complaints channel, then cancel the residence. Keep written records of every contact.
Files like this, where the sponsor has gone and the paperwork has not, are what our PRO services in Dubai team handles every week.

This guide sets out procedures, fees and time limits as published by MOHRE, GDRFA Dubai, ICP, the Ministry of Justice and in UAE legislation at the date of verification (23 September 2026). They can change, and the authority’s own screen and decision are final. Some official pages, including GDRFA’s service card and its FAQ, give different totals; both are shown. The cases are built from common situations and are illustrative, not the records of named clients. MOHRE and the courts decide outcomes.
