The short version

  • A travel ban stops you leaving or entering. It is not the same as a labour ban, and the remedies are different.
  • Most travel bans trace to a court case, a debt or a police case — not to immigration itself.
  • You cannot reliably discover a ban from outside the system. It has to be checked properly.
  • Removal follows the cause: settle the case, and the ban lifts. There is no shortcut around it.

People usually discover a travel ban at the airport, which is the worst possible moment. The good news is that bans are almost always traceable to a specific cause, and once that cause is identified the route out is procedural rather than mysterious.

The types, and why the difference matters

TypeImposed byEffect
Travel banCourts or policeBlocks exit from the UAE
Immigration banImmigration authorityBlocks re-entry to the UAE
Labour banMOHRERestricts new employment, not travel
Absconding recordEmployer via MOHREBlocks transfers, can trigger further action
These get confused constantly

A labour ban stops you taking a new job. It does not stop you flying. A travel ban stops you leaving. An immigration ban stops you coming back.

People pay to "remove a ban" without knowing which one they have — and the remedy for one does nothing for another. Establish the type first. Labour bans are covered separately in labour bans explained.

What causes a travel ban

  • Unpaid debt — bank loans, credit cards, or a bounced cheque
  • An active court case, civil or criminal
  • A police case filed against you, including by an employer
  • Unpaid rent or a landlord case
  • Family cases, such as maintenance orders
  • Business liabilities, where you are a signatory or guarantor

Note what is not on that list: overstaying alone does not usually create a travel ban, though it creates accruing fines that must be settled before you exit.

How a check works

1. Identify what may exist

Different bans sit with different bodies — courts, police, immigration and MOHRE each hold their own records. A single lookup rarely covers all of them.

2. Check the relevant registers

Using your Emirates ID and passport details. What is visible depends on which authority holds the record.

3. Identify the cause

The case number and the body that raised it. Without this, removal cannot be pursued — you are guessing.

4. Resolve, then confirm lifting

Settle or resolve the underlying case, obtain confirmation, and verify the record has actually been cleared before booking travel.

Be careful who you ask

Ban removal attracts people promising results through influence. Nobody removes a court-imposed travel ban by knowing someone — it lifts when the underlying case is resolved and the court or police confirm it.

Anyone guaranteeing removal without reference to the cause is either misinformed or worse. Treat that as the warning it is.

What removal involves

  • Debt cases — settlement or an agreed payment plan, then a formal release from the creditor and the court
  • Police cases — resolution or withdrawal of the complaint, with confirmation issued
  • Court judgments — compliance with the judgment, then application to lift
  • Employer-raised cases — often resolved through MOHRE mediation before the ban stage is reached

Timelines vary enormously with the cause. A settled debt with clean paperwork can clear quickly. A contested court matter does not.

What we do

We check the file properly — across the relevant authorities rather than one — and identify what exists, who raised it and what the case number is. Then we tell you what removal actually requires and what it will realistically take. Where the answer is that you must settle a debt, we will say so rather than sell you a process that cannot work.

Travelling soon, and not certain your file is clear?

Send your passport and Emirates ID details. We will check what is recorded, tell you the cause, and set out what clearing it involves — before you are at the airport.

Travel ban questions

How do I know if I have a travel ban?

It has to be checked against the relevant registers using your Emirates ID and passport. Because courts, police, immigration and MOHRE each hold separate records, one lookup rarely gives the whole picture.

Is a labour ban the same thing?

No. A labour ban restricts new employment; it does not stop you flying. A travel ban stops you leaving the country. They come from different authorities and are lifted in entirely different ways.

Can a ban be removed without settling the debt?

Generally no. The ban exists because of the case. Resolve the case — by settlement, payment plan or judgment — and the ban lifts. Anyone promising otherwise should be treated with suspicion.

How long does removal take?

It depends entirely on the cause. A settled debt with clean release paperwork can clear relatively quickly; a contested court case will not. Nobody can give a reliable timeline before identifying the cause.

Does overstaying cause a travel ban?

Not usually on its own, but overstay fines accrue at AED 50 per day and must be settled before you can exit. Prolonged overstay can lead to further consequences — see what happens when a visa expires.

Can I be banned without being told?

Yes. A case can be filed and a ban recorded without you being aware, particularly where notice went to an old address or a previous employer. This is exactly why checking before travel matters.

Please note. Ban types, causes and removal routes vary by authority and by case. Information verified August 2026. This is general information, not legal advice — for a court or police matter, take proper legal advice.
