- If it expired while you were abroad, an expired residence visa is not a document you can fly back on. You need a new entry permit; the re-entry permit is for a still-valid residence held outside more than 180 days.

When a UAE visa expired, the holder does not become an overstayer on the same day: a resident moves into a grace period set by permit category, during which they can renew, cancel, change status or leave without a fine, while a visit visa holder has no general grace period and should leave or extend before the expiry date. Once any grace period has run out, a fine of AED 50 per day applies until the status is regularised or the person departs, and the Emirates ID, work permit, driving licence renewal, mobile line and family sponsorship all begin to fail in sequence.
This guide explains what happens if visa expires in the UAE, in the order you will meet it, with a step plan for each situation: an expired residence visa inside the country, a visit visa expired before you could leave, a residence that lapsed abroad, and a family whose sponsor’s permit has run out. It is written from the ICP, GDRFA Dubai, MOHRE, u.ae, RTA and TDRA pages and the federal legislation, all checked on 23 September 2026.

Expired, cancelled or void: three ways a residence ends
People say “my UAE visa expired” about three different events. Name yours first.

The difference between the first two columns matters most. An expired residence visa that nobody has cancelled is still on the system as expired, and the sponsor can usually still renew it. A cancelled one is finished; the only ways forward are a new residence (through a status change or a new entry permit) or departure.
If your plan is to stay with the same sponsor, the expired visa should be renewed, not cancelled and re-issued. Cancelling an expired residence visa to “start clean” closes the renewal route, should not be counted on to restart the grace period that began at expiry (no official page says it does), and usually costs more than renewing with a small fine settled in the transaction. Ask what is being submitted before anything is typed.
What the law says happens when a UAE visa expires
The rules on an expired visa in the UAE come from one federal law and its Executive Regulation. Knowing what they say stops you believing what they do not.

Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022 (the Executive Regulation)
Article 64 fixes the start of the fine and three separate clocks. The fine (with a ceiling of AED 100 a day; the applied figure is AED 50) runs from the day after: the end of the period a resident may stay after cancellation or expiry, set per category and never more than six months in total; the end of the stay allowed on a non-renewable entry visa; and seven days from the issue of an exit permit to a violator. That last clock is why a departure permit in Dubai is valid for seven days.
The first day: what actually changes when a residence expires
What happens if visa expires, on the day itself? Four things change on the government systems, with no notice to you.
- The residence status changes to “expired” on the ICP or GDRFA record. You can see it on ICP’s File Validity service or GDRFA’s status inquiry.
- Your Emirates ID expires with it. u.ae: “When the visa expires, your Emirates ID card issued by the ICP also expires.” The card is issued for the residence period and depends on it; ICP lists “Issuing Residency Permit” and “Renewal of residency permits” as services the ID card renewal depends on.
- The grace period starts, set by category; see the UAE residence visa grace period guide.
- The work permit usually lapses too. MOHRE publishes that “work permits may be renewed (60) days prior to its expiration date”; if that did not happen, the employer is late at MOHRE as well.
None of this stops daily life on day one. It changes what you can do the next time something needs a valid ID, and it starts two clocks.

Usually the ID is renewed or cancelled with the expired residence visa, so the card fine only bites when a Dubai renewal leaves the card behind.
ICP’s residence renewal and cancellation cards publish four tiers: 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue holders and their families, widows and divorced women of residents, students after graduation and foreign relatives of UAE citizens; 90 days for skilled workers at levels 1 to 3 and property owners; 60 days for permits with a guarantor or host; 30 days for everyone else. In Dubai the standard is also 30 days, with 60, 90 or 180 days for certain categories; after a cancellation, your exact period is shown on your cancellation letter. Until you have read the end date on your own record, plan to the shortest figure that could apply to you.
What stops working after a UAE visa expired, and when
After a UAE visa expired, the Emirates ID goes with it, and almost everything in daily life sits on the ID. This is the order people meet the consequences in.

The mobile line
TDRA requires 24 hours’ warning before suspension. During suspension incoming calls and SMS still arrive, which matters because UAE Pass codes come by SMS. Service can be restored if valid details are given within 90 days of expiry; after that the line is disconnected.
The driving licence
RTA’s Dubai renewal needs a valid Emirates ID. Late renewal costs AED 10 a month up to AED 500, so the licence is rarely urgent; the expired residence visa behind it is what costs AED 50 a day after the grace period.
The bank
No federal rule freezes an account on a fixed day; each bank applies its own KYC policy. Send the new ID once issued, or settle accounts, cards and loans before leaving. Our guide to people who left the UAE on an outpass without paying explains why unsettled bank liabilities can follow you.
Your four options after an expired residence visa
Whatever caused it, an expired residence visa leaves the same four routes. Paying fines, renewing the ID and fixing the family all happen inside one of them, so choose the route first.

Option 1: renew the expired residence visa
Renewing an expired residence visa is the cheapest route when it is available: the permit was not cancelled, the same sponsor is willing, and every issuance condition is still met. u.ae puts the duty on the sponsor: “Your sponsor must renew your residence visa before it expires.” In practice renewal during the grace period is normal, and any fine accrued after it is settled in the same transaction.

For an employee the MOHRE work permit is renewed before the residence. Medical, insurance and typing charges are separate from the figures above.
ICP wants six months of passport validity to renew the residence and three months to renew the Emirates ID. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it first at your embassy, then have the expired residence visa renewed on the new passport. Option 2: cancel the expired visa
Cancel when the sponsorship is ending. Cancellation does not stop a fine or give you a right to stay; it closes the old file so a new residence can be opened or you can leave cleanly.
- Dubai (GDRFA): “Cancellation of all types of residence permits”, AED 100 plus AED 10 Knowledge and AED 10 Innovation Dirham, 48 hours, with the MOHRE work permit cancellation as a condition for private-sector employees.
- Other emirates (ICP): AED 50 application and AED 100 smart services, or AED 100 for an exceptional cancellation “based on exceptional circumstances such as the presence of disputes or in the event of the guarantor’s death”; two days. The last step is “cancellation of the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID card”.
- Family first: ICP says family members’ permits “must be cancelled before his residence is cancelled, or placed on hold for a limited period with applicable fees”.

Option 3: change status inside the country
A status change moves you to a new residence basis without leaving: a new employer, a spouse or parent sponsor, or a Green or Golden residence. The old expired residence visa is cancelled first; the new sponsor then applies for an entry permit inside the country, followed by the medical, Emirates ID and residence, with any fine settled on the way. Fees are in our visa change status fees guide. Start it in the first week: a returned application or delayed medical is what pushes people past the end date.
Option 4: leave on an expired visa
Leaving before the grace period ends costs nothing in fines and keeps your record clean. After it, the fine is paid first.
- Inside the grace period: no overstay fine; make sure the expired visa is cancelled if the sponsorship has ended, so it does not sit on the system as expired.
- After the grace period, in Dubai: GDRFA’s “Issuance of a Departure Permit” is for foreigners inside the UAE including “visa violators, and permit violators”. It costs AED 241, needs a ticket dated within seven days, requires all fines paid, and the holder must leave within seven days of issue or have the permit cancelled and re-applied for.
- After the grace period, other emirates: pay through ICP’s violation fine service (AED 100 smart fee), then leave.
GDRFA’s FAQ says overstay fines under 30 days can be paid at Dubai airports on exit and larger ones only at GDRFA headquarters; the same FAQ carries outdated fine figures, so check before you travel. If the fine is beyond you, see our UAE fine waiver guide.
ICP’s fine payment card states: “The status must be adjusted or the individual must leave the UAE after paying any fines incurred in relation to the visa or residence permit.” Paying the fine on an expired residence visa clears what has accrued; it does not give you a right to stay, and the meter starts again if you remain without a new status.
UAE visa expired: a step plan that works in any emirate
The order matters more than the speed. Most wasted weeks come from doing step six before step two.
- Read the record, not your memory: status (expired or cancelled) and date on ICP’s File Validity or GDRFA’s status inquiry.
- Confirm whether a grace period is still running. If it is, no fine yet and every option is open. If unsure of your tier, plan to the shortest.
- Check fines for everyone on the file. GDRFA’s Fines Inquiry covers “fines on your file or those under your sponsorship”; ICP smart services show ICP files.
- Check the passport: six months for an ICP residence renewal, three for the Emirates ID.
- Decide the route and write down the date it must be finished by.
- Book the dependencies: medical, insurance, attested family documents, the new employer’s work permit.
- Submit via GDRFA or Amer for Dubai files, ICP or a typing centre for the rest, settling fines inside the transaction.
- Confirm the Emirates ID (a separate step in Dubai), then fix the dependants.
How to check whether your visa has expired, and the dates
If you are not sure whether you hold an expired residence visa or a cancelled one, u.ae lists two official ways to “check your visa validity”:
- ICP File Validity at smartservices.icp.gov.ae: choose Residency, search by file number or passport details, and read the status and dates. For a cancelled residence it shows the allowed days to stay.
- GDRFA status inquiry at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae, or the GDRFA Dubai app with UAE Pass, for Dubai-issued files.
The first digit of the file number shows the issuing emirate (1 Abu Dhabi, 2 Dubai, 3 Sharjah, 4 Ajman, 5 Umm Al Quwain, 6 Ras Al Khaimah, 7 Fujairah), and so whether GDRFA or ICP holds your expired visa file; see ICP vs GDRFA. Use only icp.gov.ae, gdrfad.gov.ae or u.ae.
In Dubai (GDRFA files)
- Status inquiry and Fines Inquiry on the GDRFA website or app. Helpline 8005111 (+971 4 313 9999 from abroad).
- For an employee, the employer renews or cancels the MOHRE work permit first.
- Renewal, cancellation or status change through the GDRFA channels or an Amer centre (Amer helpline 800 5111).
- Emirates ID renewal or issue with ICP as its own step, then biometrics if required.
- If leaving after an overstay: fines settled, and a departure permit (AED 241, leave within 7 days) where needed.
In Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah (ICP files)
- File Validity and fines on ICP smart services, with UAE Pass. Helpline 600522222 (+971 600 522222 from abroad).
- MOHRE work permit renewal or cancellation first, for employees (free zone employees through their free zone authority).
- Residence and Emirates ID on the unified form: ICP says the ID renewal “is submitted in conjunction with the residence application through the unified residence and identity form, in all emirates of the country except the Emirate of Dubai”.
- If leaving after an overstay: pay through ICP’s fine payment service, then leave.
Visit visa expired: what happens and what to do
A visit visa expired is a different and faster problem: no residence behind it, no Emirates ID, and in practice no grace period.
There is no general grace period on a visit visa
Article 64 of the Executive Regulation starts the fine from the day after “the expiry of the period allowed on a non-renewable entry visa”, without a category grace period like the one residents have. ICP’s visa extension card lists the fine for “expiration of the entry visa (per day)” at AED 50, and u.ae says “visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day”. The informal ten-day grace that Dubai visit visas once had was reported removed in 2023 (Khaleej Times, quoting agents and call centres), and we found no current official card that gives one. Treat the last valid day on the visa as your last day.
Extend it before it expires
Most visit visas can be extended, but only while they are still valid. What the official cards say:

The GDRFA FAQ answer does not match the current card; use the card and confirm with whoever sponsored the visa (tourism office, airline, hotel or relative), who files the extension.
If your visit visa expired and you are still in the UAE
- Stop the clock early. Once a visit visa expired, every day adds AED 50.
- If a UAE employer or family sponsor is ready, ask whether a status change from the visit visa is possible for your visa type; the new sponsor applies and the accrued fine is settled with it.
- Otherwise, leave. Pay the accrued fine (at the airport or beforehand, depending on the amount and the authority) and fly. In Dubai, a violator who needs one takes a departure permit (AED 241, leave within 7 days).
- Do not work on a visit visa, expired or not; any employer is exposed under Article 25.
ICP’s 30-day grace for people stranded by the 2026 airspace closures ran from 10 June to 9 July 2026 and has ended. Nothing in force today gives extra days once a visit visa expired.
Residence expired while you were outside the UAE
If your UAE visa expired while you were abroad, no fine accrues, because the fine is for staying illegally. The problem is getting back in.
- An expired residence is not an entry document. You cannot board with it and regularise on arrival. The only exception in recent years was ICP’s temporary facilitation from 28 February to 31 March 2026, which let residents abroad with an expired residence visa return without a new entry permit; normal rules resumed on 1 April 2026.
- The normal route is a new entry permit. Your sponsor (employer or family member) applies for a new entry permit for you; you enter on it and complete the medical, Emirates ID and residence within the entry window (ICP’s issuance card: 60 days from entry).
- If the sponsor will not help, you cannot renew the old permit yourself unless you were self-sponsored (investor, property owner, Golden or Green holder).
- Clear the old file, which we can check under a power of attorney.

Ask your sponsor to renew before the date; in many cases that can be done while you are outside, and it is far simpler than dealing with an expired residence visa afterwards. u.ae notes early renewal (one to six months ahead) needs ICP approval.
When the sponsor’s visa expired: what happens to the family
When a sponsor’s UAE visa expired, the family feels it next. u.ae states the rule plainly: “The family’s residence permits are linked to the residence permit of the sponsoring family member. If the sponsoring family member’s visa is cancelled, it requires cancellation of the visas of the dependents.” An expired visa for the sponsor does not cancel the family’s permits on the day, but it blocks every family transaction until it is fixed.

ICP’s guarantee route, and why an expired sponsor permit can close it
ICP’s cancellation card lets a sponsor’s residence be cancelled without cancelling the family, against an AED 5,000 guarantee plus an AED 20 deposit fee. It is meant for a sponsor changing employer. The conditions include approval of the sponsor’s status change to the new employer, the salary and occupation conditions being met for all family members, the family’s permits having at least three months left, and the sponsor’s own permit being valid or within the legal grace period after expiry.
A sponsor with an expired residence visa whose grace period has also run out no longer meets that condition. Drifting can close the one route that keeps the family in place through a job change.
The right order for a family
- Check every family member’s own status and expiry date. They are often different.
- Fix the sponsor’s residence first: renew, or move the sponsor to a new residence through a status change.
- Then renew or re-sponsor the family under the valid residence. The documents list is in our family visa renewal documents checklist.
- If the sponsor is leaving, cancel the family’s permits before the sponsor’s, as ICP requires, and plan everyone’s exit or new sponsor together.
Widows and divorced wives
When a wife’s residence depended on her husband’s sponsorship and the marriage ends by death or divorce, ICP puts “widows or divorced women of residents” in its 180-day grace tier. If the sponsor has died, ICP’s exceptional cancellation (AED 100) covers “the guarantor’s death”. This is the moment to check the record rather than assume 30 days; the grace period guide sets out the tier.
Newborns: the expiry clock nobody warns parents about
A baby born in the UAE starts life without a residence, and the expired visa rules reach it once the registration window closes. Article 12 of Decree-Law 29/2021 requires the child’s identity documents and residence within four months of birth. u.ae’s “Having a baby” page puts it as 120 days to arrange “birth certificates, passports, Emirates ID and visas”.
The official pages disagree on the fine after the deadline. u.ae says “a fee of AED100 per day would be charged for each day over the 120-day period” and that “the baby will not be allowed to exit the country”. ICP’s fine payment card lists “cancellation or expiration of … newborn registration” among the triggers for AED 50 per day. We show both, because the service that collects the fine is ICP’s; the fine itself is explained in our overstay fine per day guide.
- Birth certificate from the health authority, then translated or attested where required.
- The baby’s passport from your embassy or consulate, often the slowest step and outside your control.
- Entry permit and residence under the parent’s sponsorship, with the Emirates ID.
If the sponsoring parent holds an expired residence visa, the baby cannot be sponsored until it is renewed: one unrenewed permit, two fines. If you want it handled, our newborn baby visa service in Dubai covers the whole sequence.
Working on an expired residence visa: you, the employer and MOHRE
The right to work comes from a MOHRE work permit linked to a valid residence, and both usually end together.
For the employee
- Do not keep working on an expired residence visa. Article 5 prohibits work outside the law; the grace period is time to stay, not to work.
- Raise it in writing. MOHRE publishes that work permits can be renewed 60 days before expiry; ask for the renewal in writing well before that point, and again at expiry.
- If the employer will not renew or cancel, you can go to MOHRE. Its Ministerial Resolution No. 47 of 2022 lets a worker request cancellation of the work permit without the employer’s consent in defined cases. See how to file a MOHRE complaint; MOHRE’s line is 600590000.
- Watch for an absconding report. If you simply stop going to work, the employer may file a work abandonment report after seven consecutive days of absence under MR 47/2022 Article 6. Our guide on how to check an absconding case shows how to find out.
For the employer
- Article 25: AED 50,000 for employing, harbouring or housing a foreigner in violation, multiplied by the number of people, up to AED 5,000,000.
- MOHRE late renewal: an establishment that lets work permits lapse pays late renewal penalties, published at AED 200 a month up to AED 2,000 under Cabinet Resolution 21/2020 (see our MOHRE labour card guide).
- The immigration fine on the employee’s file accrues against the file and has to be settled before renewal or cancellation, whoever ends up paying it.
The fine is recorded on the employee’s residence file and must be cleared before the file can move. Whether the employer should bear it is an employment question: Article 6 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (the Labour Law) prohibits the employer from charging the worker “the fees and costs of recruitment and employment … whether directly or indirectly”, so an employee who was ready to renew and was let down has a claim worth raising with MOHRE. Keep your messages asking for the renewal.
The Emirates ID with an expired residence visa
The Emirates ID fine is covered fully in our Emirates ID fine guide. What matters for an expired residence visa is how the two move together:
- They expire together (u.ae).
- Outside Dubai they are renewed together on ICP’s unified residence and identity form.
- In Dubai they are two steps: the residence with GDRFA and the card with ICP. The common Dubai failure is a renewed residence and a forgotten card, which then accrues its own AED 20 a day after ICP’s 30-day window, to a maximum of AED 1,000.
- ICP card conditions: passport valid three months; fingerprints at 15 or over; a new photo; AED 100 per year plus AED 100; five days.
- On cancellation, the card goes with the residence: ICP’s cancellation card ends with “cancellation of the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID card”.
The fine, in brief
The arithmetic is in our UAE overstay fine per day guide and overstay fine calculator. Four points matter here:
- Rate: AED 50 per day for residence and visit visas (ICP, u.ae). GDRFA’s FAQ still shows older AED 100 and AED 25 figures.
- Start: the day after the grace period ends for residents; the day after expiry for visit visas.
- End: only when you regularise or leave; no published total cap.
- Relief: exemption from all or part of the fine is possible (Art. 13); GDRFA’s request costs AED 15.75 for individual sponsors, and ICP has its own. The last general amnesty ran 1 September to 31 December 2024.

Does an expired visa in the UAE lead to a ban?
Not by itself. An expired visa is a fine problem, not a ban problem: the Decree-Law and Executive Regulation attach a daily fine to an expired visa in the UAE, not a ban. A ban comes from a separate decision: a deportation order under Article 15, a court or prosecution order, a police or financial case, or a labour-side restriction. Once deported, Article 18 says a person may not return without the Chairman’s permission.
The risks for someone with an expired residence visa are indirect: an unpaid fine that blocks exit, an absconding report, a bank case, or deportation in a serious case. Special situations after a UAE visa expired
These situations add a twist to an expired visa worth knowing before you choose a route.

The mistakes that cost the most
These patterns sit behind nearly every expensive expired visa file we see.
- Counting from the wrong date. Use the date on the record, not the last working day.
- Assuming the longest grace figure when ICP’s default is 30 days.
- Cancelling an expired visa when you should renew it.
- Paying the fine and stopping there. The status is still not fixed.
- Starting the status change in the last week.
- Forgetting the Emirates ID in Dubai after the residence is renewed.
- Fixing the family before the sponsor.
- Flying out to “sort it out from home” with an expired residence visa, then finding you need a new entry permit to come back.
- Using a lookalike website to check an expired visa or pay fines.
Preventing an expired visa next time

What happens if visa expires: five cases, worked through
These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.
1. Dubai employee whose employer is renewing, one week after expiry
Private-sector employee, Dubai file, residence expired six days ago, renewal “in progress”.
Position: an expired residence visa inside the grace period, so no fine yet. What we checked: the GDRFA status (expired, not cancelled), the work permit renewal and the passport validity. Route: renewal continued, medical booked that day, Emirates ID renewed as its own step. The lesson: “in progress” means nothing until you see the application number.
2. Sharjah employee made redundant, residence expired, employer silent
ICP file, skill level 6, residence expired with no renewal or cancellation. Nine days left of a 30-day grace period by the time she asked.
Position: an expired residence visa she could not renew herself, and a new job offer. Route: work permit cancelled through MOHRE’s route for workers, residence cancelled, and the new employer’s status change filed the same week. The lesson: an employer’s silence starts the same clock.
3. Tourist whose visit visa expired four days before the flight
Dubai tourist visa, booked flight after the expiry date, no extension applied for.
Position: her visit visa expired with no grace period, so AED 50 a day from the day after expiry, and an extension was no longer possible. Route: fine settled, flew on her booked date. The lesson: check the last valid day against the flight date when you book, not after the visit visa expired.
4. Family of four, sponsor’s residence expired eight months ago
Abu Dhabi file. Sponsor’s residence expired and was never renewed; wife’s and children’s permits still valid for two months.
Position: an expired residence visa well past its grace period, fine running. The family’s permits were valid but could not be renewed, and ICP’s guarantee route was closed. Route: he secured a new job; the accrued fine was settled inside the status change to the new employer, and the family was then renewed under his new residence before their permits expired. The lesson: the family’s dates look fine right up until the moment they are not.
5. Residence expired while abroad for a parent’s illness
Dubai resident, abroad four months, residence expired while away.
Position: no fine accrues abroad, but an expired residence visa is not an entry document, and this was not a 180-day case for a return permit. Route: a new entry permit from the employer, then medical, ID and residence inside the entry window; we checked the old file under a power of attorney first. The lesson: if you are abroad as your expiry date approaches, ask the sponsor to renew before it lapses.

We re-checked and rewrote this guide. Changes from the previous version: (1) we previously said ICP publishes no grace period before the Emirates ID renewal fine; ICP’s FAQ gives 30 days from the card’s expiry, then AED 20 a day to AED 1,000. (2) We previously said a three-month passport was needed to renew; that is the Emirates ID rule, while ICP’s residence renewal card requires six months.
(3) We previously said the residence renewal window “opens sixty days before expiry”; the 60 days is MOHRE’s work permit renewal window, and u.ae says early residence renewal needs ICP approval. What we will and will not do
We will read the status of your expired visa from the official record for you and everyone you sponsor, tell you whether a grace period is still running, set out which of the four routes fit and what they cost, handle renewals, cancellations, status changes, newborn residences, fine payments and exits at GDRFA and ICP, and tell you plainly when you can do something yourself for the published fee.
We will not tell you a fine can be negotiated at a counter, promise the outcome of an exemption request, suggest you keep working while your status has lapsed, advise you to rely on a longer grace period than your record shows, or quote a fee that changes after you have paid.

UAE visa expired: frequently asked questions
What happens if visa expires in the UAE while I am still here?
Nothing visible happens on the day an expired residence visa appears on the system. The permit shows as expired, your Emirates ID expires with it, and a grace period set by your category starts: ICP publishes 180, 90, 60 or 30 days, and in Dubai the standard is 30 days (some categories get 60, 90 or 180 days; after a cancellation, your exact period is shown on your cancellation letter). During it you can renew, cancel, change status or leave without a fine. After it, AED 50 a day applies until you regularise or depart.
What should I do first if my UAE visa expired?
Check the status and date on ICP’s File Validity or GDRFA’s status inquiry, then work out whether your grace period is still running. Check fines for yourself and anyone you sponsor, and your passport validity. Then choose one route: renew with the same sponsor, cancel and move, change status, or leave. Do not start work or pay a fine before you have chosen.
Is there a grace period if my visit visa expired?
Not as a general rule. The Executive Regulation starts the fine the day after a non-renewable entry visa’s permitted stay ends, and the old ten-day grace on Dubai visit visas was reported removed in 2023. ICP’s 2026 special 30-day measure ended on 9 July 2026. If your visit visa expired, AED 50 a day is running; leave or change status as soon as possible.
Can I extend a visit visa after it has expired?
Extensions are for visas that are still valid; ICP’s card describes extending “valid entry permits”. Once a visit visa expired, the practical routes are to settle the accrued fine and leave, or, if a UAE sponsor is ready and your visa type allows it, to change status inside the country. Apply for an extension a few days before expiry, not after.
Can my employer still renew an expired residence visa?
Usually yes, if it was not cancelled and all issuance conditions are still met: a passport valid for six months (ICP), health insurance, the medical and a renewed MOHRE work permit. Any fine that has accrued after the grace period is settled with the renewal. A cancelled residence cannot be renewed; a new one is needed.
Can I work on an expired residence visa?
No. The right to work comes from a MOHRE work permit linked to a valid residence, and the grace period is time to stay, not to work. Article 25 of Decree-Law 29/2021 fines anyone who employs a foreigner in violation AED 50,000 per person. Ask your employer in writing to renew, or use MOHRE’s route if they will not.
Does my Emirates ID expire when my UAE visa expired?
Yes. u.ae states that when the visa expires, the Emirates ID also expires, so an expired residence visa means an expired card. ICP allows 30 days to renew the card, then charges AED 20 a day up to AED 1,000. Outside Dubai the card is renewed on the same unified form as the residence; in Dubai it is a separate ICP step, so check it after any renewal.
What happens to my family if my UAE visa expired?
Their permits stay valid to their own expiry dates, but you cannot renew them, sponsor a newborn or add a dependant until your own residence is valid again. ICP’s route to cancel a sponsor while keeping the family needs the sponsor’s permit to be valid or in its grace period. Fix the sponsor’s status first, then the family’s.
My residence expired while I was abroad. Can I fly back?
Not on the expired permit. Under normal rules your sponsor applies for a new entry permit, you enter on it and complete the residence within the entry window. ICP’s facilitation for expired residents abroad applied only from 28 February to 31 March 2026. If your residence is still valid but you have been outside more than 180 days, the re-entry permit route applies instead.
Will an expired visa in the UAE get me banned?
Not by itself. The law attaches a daily fine to an expired visa in the UAE, not a ban. Bans come from separate decisions such as a deportation order, a court or police case, or a labour-side restriction. Settling fines and leaving normally is different from being deported: a deported person needs the ICP Chairman’s permission to return under Article 18.
How do I leave if my expired visa ran out weeks ago?
Settle the accrued fine and leave. In Dubai, GDRFA’s departure permit for violators costs AED 241, needs all fines paid and a ticket within seven days, and you must leave within seven days of issue. In the other emirates, fines are paid through ICP’s violation fine service. Check for any travel ban or case before you go to the airport.
My fine is too large to pay. What are my options?
The law lets the authorities exempt all or part of the fine (Decree-Law Art. 13). In Dubai, GDRFA’s exemption request needs a passport copy and a letter explaining the violation and inability to pay, with a fee of AED 15.75 where the sponsor is an individual; ICP has its own delay-fee exemption request. There is no general amnesty in force.
