How to apply for a Dubai family visa

In short: a Dubai resident earning AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 with employer housing, can sponsor a husband or wife, sons under 25, unmarried daughters and children with special needs. You open a sponsor file with GDRFA the first time, get an entry permit for each family member, then finish the medical test (18 and over), Emirates ID and residence within 60 days of entry. Government fees come to about AED 1,520 per adult and AED 1,250 per child from abroad, plus AED 230 once for the sponsor file.

Who can sponsor, and who can be sponsored

Three things decide eligibility, and the authority reads all three from your documents: your income, your housing and proof that you are related. Check them before you pay for anything.

The figure is the same for men and women who sponsor. It is read from your MOHRE contract or salary certificate, so the wording on those documents matters more than your offer letter. How income is proven, allowances and women sponsors are covered in our family visa salary requirement guide.

Attested marriage certificate. A resident woman can sponsor her husband on the same income test; when the wife is the sponsor, GDRFA's entry permit card lists a no-objection letter from the father.

A son stays on your file until he turns 25. After that he needs his own residence, or GDRFA's humanitarian route if he is still studying. Details: son and daughter age limits.

Unmarried daughters have no age limit. Once married, a daughter is no longer a dependant on your file.

Parents and parents-in-law go through GDRFA's humanitarian residence: AED 10,000 salary, an attested tenancy suitable for the family, three months of bank statements, committee review and a one-year permit. Full route: parents visa sponsorship.
Stepchildren and adopted children Committee
Not on the standard family route. GDRFA's humanitarian card covers a spouse's children (with the father's attested no-objection, or a guardianship document if he has died) and children in your custody under a court adoption certificate, each reviewed case by case.
A second wife Case by case
No GDRFA or ICP card publishes a separate rule. In the files we handle, each marriage contract is attested on its own, and income and housing are read against the whole family you sponsor.
Baby born in the UAE Own steps

Your family's visa can never outlast yours

ICP links a dependant's residence to the sponsor's: it matches your permit and cannot run past it. If your own residence is cancelled, the family's must be cancelled too (u.ae). Renew yourself first, then the family on the same cycle; the renewal list is in our family visa renewal checklist.

Earning less than AED 4,000? Your lawful options

Read your own documents first. If your package clears the line but the salary certificate shows only basic pay, a corrected certificate or a registered contract amendment is the fix.
Employer housing lowers the test to AED 3,000, but only when your documents say the housing is provided.
The other parent may qualify. A mother who earns above the line can sponsor the family herself.
GDRFA's humanitarian route considers a wife and children where the salary is under AED 4,000 and their permits expired or were cancelled inside the UAE, and children where the couple's combined salary is under AED 4,000. A committee decides, permits run for one year, and a deposit of AED 5,000 per request (capped at AED 15,000) applies on approval.
Long-term residence. Green visa holders can sponsor first-degree relatives (u.ae), and Golden Visa holders sponsor family on their own terms: see Golden Visa family sponsorship.

Documents you need for a Dubai family visa

Clear digital copies are enough to start; you keep the attested originals. There are three lists: yours, each family member's, and the extras that only some sponsors need.

Start here, it takes longest

The attestation chain for marriage and birth certificates

A certificate issued abroad is accepted only after it has passed every link of the chain, in this order. A missing link sends the whole file back, so begin attestation before anything else.

The certificate is certified where it was issued. Some countries add a state or regional step.

Your country's foreign ministry legalises the signature. Where it issues an apostille, that covers this step only.

The UAE mission in the issuing country attests the foreign ministry's stamp.

An apostille is not enough on its own

The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (HCCH status table, checked 27 October 2026). An apostille can stand in for the home foreign ministry's step, but the UAE embassy and MOFA stamps still follow.

Arabic or English, or a legal translation

MOFA attests documents in Arabic or English, or with a legally certified translation. A certificate in any other language needs an Arabic translation by a legal translator registered with the UAE Ministry of Justice: see legal translation.

Issued in the UAE? No foreign chain

A marriage contract from a UAE court or a birth certificate issued in the UAE is a local document. It never goes through a foreign ministry or a UAE embassy.

Inside or outside the UAE

Applying from abroad or from inside the UAE

Everything after entry is identical. What changes is the entry permit: GDRFA adds in-country lines when the family member is already here, and a status amendment moves them from a visit visa onto the new permit.

Family member abroad

Entry permit AED 210 (AED 200 plus 5% VAT). Fly in within 60 days of issue. No status change fee.

Family member already in the UAE

Entry permit AED 210 plus AED 520 in-country lines (AED 500, AED 10 and AED 10), then a AED 535 status amendment, plus typing-centre charges. At the counter that comes to about AED 1,368 more per person, with no flight and no gap.

Which is cheaper for your family?

Set AED 1,368 per person against what a short trip out and back really costs you.

Exit and re-enter usually wins for one or two people when return flights cost less than about AED 1,368 each and nobody misses school or work.
Change status inside usually wins with several children, expensive flights or a visit visa close to expiry.
Never let the visit visa lapse while you decide. Each extra day costs AED 50 per person.

How much a Dubai family visa costs in 2026

These are the government lines from the GDRFA, ICP and Dubai Health fee cards, per person. They leave out typing-centre charges, health insurance, attestation and our fee; the calculator further down adds the counter charges for your own family.

What a typing centre adds, line by line

Typing and service charge: Every transaction typed at an Amer or Tasheel centre carries the centre's own charge, with VAT on that charge.
Entry permit: The AED 210 government line plus the centre's charge; inside the UAE, the AED 520 in-country lines sit on top.
Status amendment: GDRFA's AED 535 plus the centre's charge.
Medical test: Dubai Health lists AED 270 for the standard service; booked through a centre, the price can be higher.
Emirates ID and residence: ICP's AED 300 and GDRFA's card lines, each with the centre's charge.
Sponsor file: AED 230 in government lines plus the centre's charge.

Counter totals add these charges on top of the government lines. Our own fee is separate: AED 500 per new visa, VAT included, fixed in writing.

Partner and investor sponsors

The family steps do not change. GDRFA's family entry permit card asks a partner for the partnership contract showing a share of at least AED 48,000. When a company rather than an individual files the status amendment, GDRFA charges an AED 50 establishment fee instead of AED 15. Health insurance and Ejari

In Dubai, GDRFA's sponsor file card lists an attested Ejari or a Dubai Land Department title deed, and Dubai's Health Insurance Law (No. 11 of 2013) makes the sponsor insure each dependant when the employer does not. In the other emirates, ICP lists a valid health insurance policy and housing that is owned or rented. The table below sets out the differences.

Counted from the issue date (ICP). If it lapses, a new permit and a new fee are needed; ICP's card allows an extension for a similar period under its rules.

Medical, Emirates ID and residence must be done within 60 days of entry (ICP and GDRFA). After that, the stay is an overstay.

ICP charges AED 50 a day per person once the permit or the grace period has run out. For a family of four, that is AED 200 a day.

Standard grace in Dubai
In Dubai, the standard grace period after a residence visa is cancelled is 30 days. Certain visa categories receive 60, 90 or 180 days; the exact period is confirmed on your cancellation letter. More in our grace period guide.

Mistakes that get family visa files returned

A missing link in the attestation chain
A notarised certificate without the UAE embassy stamp, or a MOFA stamp on a copy instead of the original.
Salary documents that disagree
Contract, salary certificate and bank statements showing different figures, or housing left unstated when you rely on the AED 3,000 test.
A tenancy in someone else's name
A lease held by a flatmate or relative, or an expired Ejari, when the sponsor file is opened.
Names spelled differently
Passport, marriage certificate and birth certificates must carry the same names. Fix a transliteration gap before you apply.
A visit visa left to run down
Starting a status change with a day or two left. Any gap becomes overstay at AED 50 a day.
Missing the 60-day window
Medical and biometrics booked late, so the residence is not finished within 60 days of entry.

What salary do I need to sponsor my family in Dubai?

AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 a month if your employer provides housing. GDRFA, ICP and u.ae publish the same test for men and women. The figure is read from your MOHRE contract or salary certificate, so those documents need to show it and state the housing position. Parents need a separate, higher test.

How much does a Dubai family visa cost in 2026?

In government fees, about AED 1,520 per adult and AED 1,250 per child under 18 from abroad, plus AED 230 once to open the sponsor file, so a spouse from abroad comes to about AED 1,750. Health insurance, attestation and typing-centre charges are extra. Our own fee is AED 500 per new visa, VAT included.

Why does it cost more if my family is already in the UAE?

GDRFA adds AED 520 of in-country lines to the entry permit and charges AED 535 for the status amendment that moves the person from a visit visa onto the new permit. With typing-centre charges, that is about AED 1,368 more per person at the counter, which can still cost less than flights out and back for a larger family.

Can I apply for a Dubai family visa online?

Yes. GDRFA takes entry permit and residence applications on its website and smart app at any hour, with UAE PASS or a username. A first-time sponsor file is opened at an Amer centre. If your residence was issued in another emirate, you apply on the ICP website or app instead.

How long does a Dubai family visa take?

Each GDRFA stage takes about 48 hours on a complete application, the standard medical result takes 24 working hours and ICP completes the Emirates ID within 5 days. On paper that is about 8 to 12 working days; in practice plan 2 to 4 weeks, plus attestation if it has not started.

Do children need a medical test for a family visa?

No. The medical fitness test is only for family members aged 18 or over, according to u.ae. Children under 18 still need an Emirates ID, and those aged 15 or over give fingerprints and a signature for it at an ICP centre.

Who needs biometrics for the Emirates ID?

ICP asks every applicant aged 15 or over to give fingerprints and a signature at an ICP service centre. If biometrics are not completed within ICP's set period, the application can be cancelled, so book the appointment as soon as the Emirates ID application is in.

Do I need an Ejari for a family visa in Dubai?

For a first sponsor file, yes: GDRFA's sponsor file card lists an attested Ejari tenancy contract or a Dubai Land Department title deed. If you live in employer housing or a lease in another name, check how the file will be evidenced before you apply. Our Ejari guide covers every case.

Do I need health insurance for my family in Dubai?

Yes. Dubai's Health Insurance Law (No. 11 of 2013) makes the sponsor responsible for insuring dependants when the employer does not. GDRFA's family cards do not list the policy as a document, while ICP lists valid health insurance for families in the other emirates.

How long is the family entry permit valid?

The family member must enter the UAE within 60 days of the permit's issue date, according to ICP. After entry, the medical test, Emirates ID and residence have to be completed within 60 days.

What happens if we miss the 60 days after entry?

The stay becomes an overstay, and ICP charges AED 50 per person for each day. Book the medical test and biometrics in the first week after arrival, so there is time to repeat a test or replace a returned document.

How long is a Dubai family visa valid?

A family member's residence follows the sponsor's: ICP says it matches your permit and cannot exceed it. GDRFA prices a two-year permit and adds AED 100 for each year beyond two. Parents on the humanitarian route receive one year at a time.

Can a woman sponsor her husband and children in Dubai?

Yes. GDRFA lets residents of either sex sponsor a husband and children on the same income test. When the mother is the sponsor, GDRFA's entry permit card lists a no-objection letter from the father. More detail is in our salary requirement guide.

Until what age can I sponsor my son?

Until he turns 25. Unmarried daughters and children with special needs have no age limit. A son over 25 who is still studying can be considered under GDRFA's humanitarian route with proof of continued studies; otherwise he needs a residence of his own. See our age limit guide.

Can I sponsor my stepchildren or an adopted child?

Not on the standard family route. GDRFA's humanitarian residence covers a spouse's children, with the father's attested no-objection certificate, and children in your custody under a court adoption certificate. A committee reviews each case, and the permit is issued for one year.

Can I sponsor my parents?

Yes, in Dubai through GDRFA's humanitarian residence: a salary of at least AED 10,000, an attested tenancy suitable for the family, three months of bank statements and a deposit of AED 5,000 per request once approved. See parents visa sponsorship.

My salary is below AED 4,000. What are my options?

First check that your documents show your full salary and any employer housing. If you are still short, the other parent may qualify, or GDRFA's humanitarian route may consider the case. There is no lawful shortcut; a file check (AED 100, credited to your fee) confirms the route before you spend on attestation.

Does the UAE accept an apostille on my marriage certificate?

Not on its own. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the UAE embassy in the issuing country and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs must still attest the certificate. An apostille can only stand in for the home foreign ministry's step.

Is the family visa still stamped in the passport?

No. ICP stopped issuing residence stickers on 11 April 2022. The residence is issued electronically, the Emirates ID is the proof of residence, and the residence details can be viewed in ICP's app.
