Status change is the quiet workhorse of UAE immigration. Done at the right moment it saves a flight, several days and a good deal of stress. Done late, it is not available at all.

What it is, and what it replaces

Historically, converting from a visit visa to a residence visa meant leaving the country and re-entering on the new entry permit — the "border run". Status change does that conversion in place, on the system.

The comparison that matters

People weigh the AED 650–1,100 against "free" and hesitate. The real comparison is against a return flight, possibly a hotel night, two or three days out of the process, and the risk of being refused re-entry. Status change wins on almost every file where it is available.

Eligibility — the part that decides everything

Availability depends on your current visa type, its remaining validity, your nationality in some cases, and whether anything is outstanding against your file.

The timing trap

Status change needs enough remaining validity on your current visa to complete. Start it with a week left and the visa can expire mid-process — at which point you are overstaying at AED 50 per day and the cheap route is no longer available.

Begin at least three to four weeks before expiry.

Secure the new entry permit

Employment or family, depending on the route. The permit must exist before the change is applied.

Apply the status change

Submitted through Amer. Typically 1–3 working days.

Complete the residence file

Medical fitness, Emirates ID biometrics and stamping follow as normal.

Where status change goes wrong

Left too late — insufficient validity remaining, so the option disappears
Previous visa not properly cancelled, or cancelled later than assumed, so the grace period already ran
Unpaid fines holding the file, discovered mid-application
Entry permit not yet issued when the change is attempted
Employer's establishment file blocked by a WPS flag, so the work permit behind it cannot issue
Assuming it is always available. Some visa types and situations simply do not qualify

Status change questions

How much does a visa status change cost in Dubai?

Roughly AED 650–1,100 plus typing and submission charges, depending on category and authority. Compared against a return flight and two to three lost days for a border run, it is almost always the cheaper route.

How long does a status change take?

Typically one to three working days for the change itself. The medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics and residence stamping follow afterwards as normal.

Can I change status from a visit visa to an employment visa?

In most cases yes, provided your visit visa has sufficient remaining validity and the employer's work permit and entry permit are in place. Eligibility depends on your specific visa type and file.

Do I still need to leave the country?

No — that is the entire point. Status change performs the conversion in place, removing the need for the traditional border run.

When should I start a status change?

Three to four weeks before your current visa expires. Starting with only days remaining risks the visa lapsing mid-process, at which point overstay begins at AED 50 per day and the option is no longer available.

Can I change status if I am already overstaying?

Generally not until the overstay is settled and your position regularised. The sequence matters — paying a fine without a valid route forward simply restarts the accrual.
