The short version
- GDRFA Dubai's current humanitarian residence card asks for a monthly salary of at least AED 10,000 to sponsor your parents or your spouse's parents, plus an attested tenancy contract that suits the household and three months of bank statements.
- If the application is approved, a refundable financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per application applies, capped at AED 15,000 in total.
- The parents' residence is issued for one year and is renewable, so this is a yearly renewal. We handle it with the checklist in our family visa renewal documents guide.
- Health insurance is compulsory for every Dubai resident under Dubai's Health Insurance Law, and the sponsor pays for it.
- There is no passport stamp. Since 11 April 2022 the Emirates ID is the proof of residence.
In short: A Dubai resident can sponsor their parents, or their spouse's parents, through GDRFA Dubai's humanitarian residence route with a salary of at least AED 10,000 a month, an attested tenancy contract big enough for the household and three months of bank statements. A committee reviews every file and GDRFA lists 14 days. If approved, a refundable guarantee of AED 5,000 per application is paid. The residence lasts one year and is renewable. Government fees for a parent coming from abroad are about AED 1,420 (entry permit about AED 210, residence AED 740, one-year Emirates ID AED 200, medical AED 270), plus compulsory health insurance.
Sponsoring parents is the hardest routine family application in Dubai, and the one where published advice is least reliable, because many articles still quote figures that GDRFA's own service card no longer shows.

What salary do you need to sponsor parents in Dubai?
GDRFA Dubai's service card for a residence permit for humanitarian cases sets a minimum salary of AED 10,000 a month for sponsoring parents or parents-in-law. The salary certificate (government sector) or employment contract (private sector) must show it. Partners and investors use the partnership agreement, trade licence and partners' annex instead.
You also need an attested tenancy contract suitable for the number of people who will live there, and bank statements for the last three months. Each request is reviewed by a committee case by case, so meeting the salary figure makes you eligible to apply; it does not guarantee approval.
Older Dubai guidance quoted AED 20,000 a month, or AED 19,000 plus a two-bedroom home, and an archived u.ae page still repeats it. The current GDRFA card states AED 10,000. The full comparison, with sources, is in our family visa salary requirement guide.

Renewal is cheaper. GDRFA's renewal card lists AED 240 in residence lines (AED 200, two Dirham fees of AED 10 and AED 20 delivery), and with a new one-year Emirates ID and a medical test that comes to about AED 710 a year, plus insurance. The renewal card lists five days.
The AED 5,000 sits with GDRFA for the life of the residence. It is returned when the visa is cancelled cleanly, so an overstay or unpaid fine at the end can eat into it.
Since 11 April 2022 ICP no longer puts residence stickers in passports. The Emirates ID is the proof of residence, so there is no stamping fee to pay.
Can you sponsor only your mother or father?
GDRFA's current card does not spell out a both-parents rule for parents. Older GDRFA guidance asked for both parents to be sponsored together unless one has died or the parents are divorced, and the committee still reviews every file and can ask why one parent is left out.
If you are sponsoring one parent only, give the reason up front with a death certificate or divorce decree. If both will live with you, apply for both together and budget for two guarantees.
What documents do you need to sponsor parents?

- Health insurance in each parent's own name
- Where sponsoring one parent only: death certificate or divorce decree
Your own birth certificate, attested, is what proves the relationship. Many applicants have never needed it in the UAE before and discover the attestation chain has not been started. It runs through the issuing country first; see the attestation chain explained.

Attestation of your birth certificate sits outside this and can add four to ten weeks if it has not been started.
Where parent applications fail
- Salary below AED 10,000 on the certificate or contract that is submitted
- Missing bank statements for the last three months
- Relationship proof not attested, the most common documentary gap
- Sponsoring one parent without documents explaining why
- Tenancy too small or not attested for the household including parents
- Insurance declined or priced out: arrange it before applying, as older applicants can be harder to cover
- Treating it as a two-year visa. It is one year, so the cost recurs
Parents visa questions
What salary do I need to sponsor my parents in Dubai?
At least AED 10,000 a month, according to GDRFA Dubai's humanitarian residence card, with an attested tenancy contract suitable for the household and three months of bank statements. A committee reviews each request, so meeting the figure lets you apply but does not guarantee approval.
Is there a deposit for a parents visa?
Yes. If the application is approved, GDRFA asks for a financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per application, capped at AED 15,000 in total. It is refundable when the visa is cancelled cleanly with no outstanding fines.
How long is a parents visa valid?
One year, renewable. GDRFA renews it on the same conditions it was granted under, after a medical fitness test, and its renewal card lists five days. Spouses and children usually get two years, so budget for a yearly renewal.
Can I sponsor only my mother, or only my father?
GDRFA's current card does not state a both-parents rule, but older guidance required both unless one parent has died or they are divorced, and the committee reviews each file. If you are sponsoring one parent, include the death certificate or divorce decree with the application.
Can I sponsor my mother-in-law or father-in-law?
Yes. GDRFA's humanitarian residence card covers your spouse's parents on the same terms as your own: AED 10,000 a month, an attested tenancy contract and three months of bank statements, with proof of the relationship through your marriage certificate.
Is health insurance mandatory for parents?
Yes. Dubai's Health Insurance Law No. 11 of 2013 makes cover compulsory for every resident and puts the cost on the sponsor where no employer covers the person. A policy is needed for the visa to be issued and renewed. Arrange it before applying, as premiums rise with age.
Can a golden visa holder sponsor parents?
Yes. ICP's Golden Residency page lists the ability to obtain residence permits for parents among the benefits. The AED 10,000 salary test on GDRFA's humanitarian card is written for ordinary residents, so confirm the conditions for your golden residence file before applying.
Can my parents come on a visit visa instead?
Yes, for shorter stays. GDRFA's visit visa for a relative or friend is single entry for 30, 60 or 90 days at AED 200, 300 or 400 plus VAT, plus insurance and a refundable AED 1,000 deposit. It does not give residence or an Emirates ID.
What proof of relationship do I need?
Your own birth certificate, attested, showing your parents' names, plus their marriage certificate where asked for. The attestation chain starts in the issuing country and is the most common cause of delay on these files.
Is the parents visa stamped in the passport?
No. ICP stopped issuing residence stickers on 11 April 2022, and the Emirates ID now serves as proof of residence. Your parents' residence details sit on their Emirates ID and in the GDRFA and ICP systems.
