Parents Visa Sponsorship in Dubai

The federal bar says AED 10,000. GDRFA Dubai has historically applied AED 20,000. Which one governs your file decides whether this application succeeds.

The short version

  • Federal rules put the bar at AED 10,000, but GDRFA Dubai has historically applied AED 20,000 for the standard route. Dubai practice is the one that decides your file.
  • A refundable deposit of around AED 5,000 applies, released when the visa is cancelled with no fines outstanding.
  • Parent visas are typically issued for one year, not two — so this is an annual renewal, not a set-and-forget.
  • Health insurance in the parent's own name is mandatory and non-negotiable. No policy, no visa.

Sponsoring parents is the hardest routine family application in Dubai, and the one where published advice is least reliable — because the federal position and Dubai practice have not fully converged.

The salary question, honestly

A federal reform in October 2022 lowered the headline requirement for sponsoring parents from AED 20,000 to AED 10,000. That is the figure most articles quote.

In practice, GDRFA Dubai has historically applied a higher bar of AED 20,000 for the standard parent route, and Dubai-specific guidance still reflects that. There is also a humanitarian route at a lower threshold, often cited around AED 10,000 — but it is discretionary and assessed case by case, not an entitlement.

Why this matters more than usual

If you budget on the federal AED 10,000 figure and Dubai applies AED 20,000 to your file, you have lost the application fee and the deposit processing time. This is precisely the situation where a pre-check against your actual salary certificate and profession is worth more than any article.

What it costs

ComponentTypical rangeNotes
Refundable deposit~AED 5,000Per parent. Released on clean cancellation
Entry permitAED 500 – 1,100Inside or outside country
Status change, if already hereAED 650 – 1,100Avoids an exit and re-entry
Medical fitness testAED 300 – 700Required for adults
Emirates IDAED 170 – 370One-year validity typically
Visa stampingAED 500 – 1,000
Health insuranceAED 700 – 1,500+Higher for older applicants; mandatory
All-in per parent, excluding depositAED 3,000 – 5,000Recurring annually while the visa is held
The deposit is refundable, not free

Around AED 5,000 per parent sits with the authority for the life of the visa. It is released when the visa is cancelled cleanly with no outstanding fines — so an overstay or unpaid fine at the end eats into it.

Both parents, or neither

Dubai generally expects both parents to be sponsored together. Sponsoring one and leaving the other abroad is permitted only in specific circumstances — typically where the other parent is deceased, divorced, or there are documented humanitarian grounds.

Plan and budget for two, and raise the exception explicitly if it applies to you rather than hoping it passes unnoticed.

What you need

Document checklist

  • Sponsor's passport, residence visa and Emirates ID
  • Salary certificate and attested MOHRE labour contract
  • Registered Ejari and a recent DEWA bill — accommodation must suit the household size
  • Parents' passports, with six months validity
  • Attested proof of relationship — your birth certificate showing their names
  • Marriage certificate of the parents, attested, where required
  • Health insurance in each parent's own name
  • Where sponsoring one parent only: death certificate, divorce decree or humanitarian evidence
  • Undertaking to bear all costs and responsibility
The document people forget

Your own birth certificate, attested, is what proves the relationship. Many applicants have never needed it in the UAE before and discover the attestation chain has not been started. It runs through the issuing country first — see the attestation chain explained.

How long it takes

StageWorking days
Eligibility assessment1 – 2
Deposit lodgement and approval3 – 10
Entry permit3 – 7
Status change or entry1 – 3
Medical fitness1 – 3
Emirates ID and stamping3 – 7
End to end, complete file3 – 6 weeks

Attestation of your birth certificate sits outside this and can add four to ten weeks if it has not been started.

Where parent applications fail

  • Budgeting on the federal figure when Dubai applies the higher bar
  • Relationship proof not attested — the most common documentary gap
  • Sponsoring one parent without documented grounds for the exception
  • Accommodation too small for the household including parents
  • Insurance declined or priced out — arrange it before applying, not after; older applicants are sometimes harder to cover
  • Treating it as a two-year visa. It is typically annual, so the cost recurs

Parents visa questions

What salary do I need to sponsor my parents in Dubai?

The federal headline figure is AED 10,000 since the October 2022 reform, but GDRFA Dubai has historically applied AED 20,000 for the standard route. A discretionary humanitarian route at a lower threshold exists but is assessed case by case. Have your specific file checked before budgeting.

Is there a deposit for a parents visa?

Yes, around AED 5,000 per parent, refundable when the visa is cancelled cleanly with no outstanding fines. It is held for the life of the visa.

How long is a parents visa valid?

Typically one year, unlike the two-year visas issued for spouses and children. That makes it an annual renewal with recurring cost, which many sponsors do not budget for.

Can I sponsor only my mother, or only my father?

Dubai generally expects both parents to be sponsored together. Sponsoring one is permitted in specific documented circumstances — typically bereavement, divorce or humanitarian grounds — and the evidence should be presented up front.

Is health insurance mandatory for parents?

Yes, and it is non-negotiable. GDRFA will not issue or renew a parent's visa without an active policy in that parent's own name. Arrange cover before applying, as older applicants can be harder or costlier to insure.

What proof of relationship do I need?

Your own birth certificate, attested, showing your parents' names — plus their marriage certificate where required. The attestation chain starts in the issuing country and is the most common cause of delay on these files.
