Renew before the grace period bites. Full fee breakdown, realistic timelines, and the blockers — expired Emirates ID, lapsed Ejari, unpaid ILOE — that stall most renewals.
Residence visa renewal is one of the few UAE processes that is genuinely simple — provided nothing else on your file has lapsed. In practice, something usually has.
| Component | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Medical fitness test | AED 300 – 700 | Standard, urgent or VIP tier |
| Emirates ID renewal | AED 100/yr + AED 100 | Plus AED 30–70 typing |
| Visa stamping | AED 500 – 1,000 | Duration dependent |
| Medical insurance | AED 650 – 2,500+ | Mandatory; age and cover dependent |
| ILOE subscription | AED 60 – 120/yr | Blocks the work permit if unpaid |
| Typing and submission | AED 100 – 300 | Amer centre |
| Realistic all-in | AED 2,500 – 4,000 | Employment-sponsored, 2-year renewal |
Government fees pass through at cost. Our service fee is fixed and agreed before we start, so you can see exactly what is authority charge and what is handling.
| Situation | Grace | Clock starts |
|---|---|---|
| Visa expired, not renewed | 30 days (some categories 60) | Day after expiry |
| Visa cancelled by employer | 30 days | Day after cancellation is recorded |
| Golden or Green visa | up to 180 days | Day after the permit lapses |
| After grace | AED 50 per day | Unified nationally since 11 February 2026 |
An ordinary residence visa is voided if you stay outside the UAE for more than six continuous months. Renewal will not fix that — the visa is already invalid and you need a fresh entry permit. Golden and Green visa holders are treated differently.
If you have been away close to six months, get the position checked before you book a return flight.
In our case load, the visa itself is almost never the problem. These are, in order of frequency:
| Blocker | Why it stops the file | Fix time |
|---|---|---|
| Expired Emirates ID | Blocks Ejari and most ICP transactions | 1 – 3 weeks |
| Lapsed Ejari | Required as proof of accommodation | 1 – 5 days |
| Unpaid ILOE fine | Blocks the underlying work permit | Same day |
| WPS flag on the employer | Blocks permits across the whole establishment | Weeks |
| Expired establishment card | Employer cannot transact at all | 3 – 10 days |
| Unpaid traffic or immigration fines | Held at stamping | Same day |
| Passport under 6 months validity | Renewal refused | Consulate dependent |
Every one of these is checkable before you start. That check is free, and it is the entire reason people who use a PRO rarely have renewal emergencies.
Document checklist
| Stage | Working days |
|---|---|
| File check and typing | Same day |
| Medical fitness | 1 – 3 |
| Emirates ID biometrics, if required | 1 – 2 |
| Visa stamping | 2 – 5 |
| End to end, clean file | 5 – 10 working days |
Expiry date, or the recorded cancellation date. This single figure determines your exposure. See our guide on overstay fines per day.
Settling the overstay while an ILOE fine or a WPS block remains just means paying twice for the same delay.
If your sponsor relationship has ended, renewal is not available and a status change or clean exit is the route. Paying the fine without a plan simply restarts the accrual.
Including weekends and public holidays. Deliberation is the most expensive part of this process.
Sixty days before expiry. The fee is identical whether you renew early or late, and starting early leaves room for the blockers that commonly surface — an expired Emirates ID, a lapsed Ejari or an unpaid ILOE liability.
Roughly AED 2,500–4,000 all-in for a standard two-year employment-sponsored renewal, covering medical fitness, Emirates ID, stamping, insurance and typing. Government fees should be quoted separately from any service fee.
Generally 30 days, with some categories cited at 60, and up to 180 days for Golden and Green visa holders. After grace, overstay accrues at AED 50 per day.
The Emirates ID is renewed as part of the same process, but an expired card blocks Ejari registration, which is itself required for the visa. In practice the card has to be dealt with first, which is why lapsed cards are the most common cause of delayed renewals.
An ordinary residence visa is voided by more than six continuous months outside the UAE, and renewal will not restore it — a fresh entry permit is required. Golden and Green visa holders are not subject to the same rule.
Yes, for a clean file. The value of using a PRO is the pre-check: establishing that your Ejari, Emirates ID, ILOE and employer's establishment file are all clear before you start, rather than discovering a blocker mid-process.
