- Cancellation is two steps — the MOHRE labour side, then the immigration side. Doing only one leaves you in limbo.

Cancellation looks like the simplest transaction in UAE immigration and produces more expensive mistakes than almost any other. The reason is that it is the moment two clocks start — your grace period, and your exposure if it was done wrong.

The two-step sequence
Labour side — MOHRE
The employer files the labour contract cancellation and obtains the labour card cancellation certificate. This is mandatory, and the immigration side cannot proceed without it.
Settle what is outstanding
Fines against the employee or the establishment will hold the file. This includes ILOE liabilities and any WPS flag on the employer.
Immigration side — GDRFA
The residence visa is cancelled and the Emirates ID surrendered. This is the date your grace period starts from.
Confirm it on the system
Do not take the employer's word for it. Verify the recorded cancellation date yourself — this single check prevents most overstay disasters we deal with.
Keep the e-cancellation document (the "cancellation paper") and check the reason on it. An ILOE unemployment claim does not pay out on a resignation or a disciplinary dismissal, so a wrong reason can cost you the claim.
Your grace period (in Dubai 30 days as standard, with 60, 90 or 180 days for certain categories and the exact period printed on your cancellation letter; 30 to 180 days in other emirates, by category) runs from the date cancellation is recorded on the system — not your last working day, not the day you returned your laptop, not the date on your resignation letter.
If your employer cancelled three weeks after you left, you lost three weeks of grace without being told. After grace, overstay accrues at AED 50 per day.

You cannot cleanly cancel your own visa while dependants are still sponsored on your file. Either cancel theirs alongside, or transfer sponsorship, before your own cancellation completes.
How do you cancel a family or maid visa in Dubai?
When you sponsor your own family, you are the sponsor, so you file their cancellation yourself. GDRFA's FAQ gives AED 190 inside the UAE or AED 290 outside, plus Amer fees, for an individual sponsor.
- Order: cancel your spouse's and children's visas before your own. ICP's service card says family members' permits must be cancelled before the worker's residence, or placed on hold.
- Keeping the family while you change jobs (other emirates): ICP allows the sponsor's permit to be cancelled while the family's permits stay, against an AED 5,000 guarantee plus an AED 20 deposit fee. The move to the new employer must be approved, you must meet the salary and occupation conditions, and the family's permits must have at least 3 months left.
- Domestic workers (maids, drivers, nannies): the employer first cancels the domestic worker's work permit with MOHRE (AED 85.75 in Dubai, AED 65 elsewhere, 1 working day on MOHRE's card, and possible whether the worker is inside or outside the country), then the residence at GDRFA. Domestic workers fall under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, not the general Labour Law.

Common situations
You are staying in the UAE for a new job
Cancellation must complete before a new work permit can issue. A status change then avoids an exit and re-entry. Sequence matters: do not resign into a gap you cannot cover.
Your employer will not cancel
This is common and it is not something to wait out. An uncancelled visa leaves you in an ambiguous status that gets worse, and an unresponsive employer sometimes files an absconding report instead. Escalate through MOHRE rather than hoping.
You have already left the country
Cancellation from outside the UAE is possible in many cases, but it is procedurally harder and the grace period may already have run. Get the recorded status checked before assuming anything.
Your visa is through a free zone (DMCC, JAFZA, DAFZA)
The free zone authority takes MOHRE's place: the company applies on the free zone portal and the authority submits the cancellation to immigration. DMCC's guidelines give a grace period of 29 days to exit or change status, so check the date on your e-cancellation documents rather than assuming.
You are the employer
Cancel promptly. A visa left open against your establishment continues to occupy quota, and delayed cancellations are a frequent trigger for disputes and absconding claims that then have to be unwound.
Sponsor not responding, or the company has closed?
The normal route needs the employer. When the employer cannot be reached, has closed the business or has died, MOHRE can cancel the work permit on the worker's complaint, and GDRFA or ICP then cancel the residence. For a family sponsored by an individual, GDRFA's FAQ gives AED 190 inside the UAE or AED 290 outside, plus Amer fees. Dependants must be cancelled before the sponsor's own visa. In the other emirates, ICP lists an application fee of AED 50 plus AED 100 smart services.
How do I cancel my maid's visa in Dubai?
First cancel the domestic worker's work permit with MOHRE: AED 85.75 in Dubai, completed in 1 working day on MOHRE's service card, and available whether the worker is inside or outside the country. Then cancel the residence at GDRFA. Clear any fines on the file first.

When does my grace period start after cancellation?
From the date cancellation is recorded on the system, not your last working day. In Dubai, the standard grace period after a residence visa is cancelled is 30 days. Certain visa categories receive 60, 90 or 180 days. The period depends on your visa type, and the exact grace that applies to you is confirmed only once the cancellation is processed, on your cancellation letter. ICP publishes 180, 90, 60 or 30 days by category for the other emirates. Overstay fines start the day after your grace period ends, at AED 50 per day, per person. How long does visa cancellation take?
Five to fourteen working days for a clean file. Delays are usually caused by unpaid fines, a WPS flag on the employer, or dependants who have not been cancelled or transferred first.
Can I cancel my visa if my employer refuses?
Not unilaterally, but you can escalate through MOHRE. Do not simply wait — an uncancelled visa leaves you in an ambiguous status, and unresponsive employers sometimes file an absconding report instead.
What happens to my family's visas when mine is cancelled?
They are sponsored on your file, so they must be cancelled alongside yours or transferred to another sponsor. Your own cancellation cannot complete cleanly while dependants remain attached.
Can my visa be cancelled while I am outside the UAE?
In many cases yes, though it is procedurally harder and your grace period may already have elapsed. Have the recorded status checked before making travel or employment decisions.
