The short version

The chain starts in the country that issued the degree — not in the UAE. This is the step people try to skip, and it cannot be skipped.
An attested degree is often still not enough. Many professions also need MOHRE equivalency, a separate application.
Realistic end to end: 4–10 weeks. Anyone quoting three days is describing the final UAE link only.
An apostille alone is not sufficient for UAE purposes.

Degree attestation delays more UAE employment files than any other document, and almost always for the same reason: someone started in the middle of a chain that only works in order.

The institution confirms the degree is genuine. Depending on the country this may run through the registrar or a national education body.

Home country authentication

State-level authentication or HRD attestation for educational documents, required in many jurisdictions before the foreign ministry will act.

If you are still abroad, do this before you fly

Once the original is in the UAE, completing the earlier links means couriering it back — adding weeks plus the risk of losing an irreplaceable document. Attest before relocating.

Equivalency — the step discovered too late

For many professions an attested degree is only half the requirement. MOHRE also wants an equivalency certificate confirming your qualification is equivalent to a UAE-recognised standard.

The pattern we see constantly: attestation completes, everyone relaxes, and equivalency surfaces weeks later when the work permit is refused. We flag it at the outset so it runs in parallel rather than sequentially.

Which professions need it

Regulated and skilled roles most often — engineering, healthcare, education, legal and accounting among them. It also matters for the Golden Visa skilled professional route. If your role has a professional body, assume equivalency applies and confirm early.

Where degree attestation goes wrong

Starting in the middle. The single biggest cause of wasted time and money.
Translating before attesting. The translation then does not carry the stamps and must be redone.
Name mismatch between the certificate and the passport — resolve before starting, it will not be overlooked at the end.
Attesting a photocopy. Most links require the original.
Assuming an apostille suffices. For UAE purposes it generally does not.
Forgetting equivalency until the work permit is refused.
Unrecognised institution. Some degrees cannot be equivalenced at all — better to know in week one than week nine.

How long does degree attestation take for the UAE?

Four to ten weeks end to end including MOHRE equivalency. The UAE MOFA link itself takes only one to three working days, which is why quoted timelines vary so wildly — many describe that final step alone.

Can I attest my degree after arriving in the UAE?

Only the final UAE MOFA link can be completed here. The university verification, home country authentication and UAE Embassy links must happen in the issuing country, so the original usually has to be couriered back. Attest before relocating if you can.

Is an apostille enough for the UAE?

Generally not on its own. The UAE Embassy and MOFA attestation links are still required. Assume the full chain is needed unless specifically advised otherwise for your document and country.

What is MOHRE equivalency and do I need it?

It is MOHRE's confirmation that a foreign qualification matches a UAE-recognised standard, and it is required for many regulated and skilled professions. It is a separate application after attestation, typically taking two to six weeks.

Should I translate my degree before or after attestation?

After. A translation prepared beforehand will not carry the attestation stamps and generally has to be redone, meaning you pay twice.

What if my university is not recognised?

Some institutions cannot be equivalenced, which affects both employment and Golden Visa routes. It is worth establishing this at the outset rather than after nine weeks and several fees.
