Home-country stages (issuing body, notary or state authentication, foreign ministry or apostille) and the UAE Embassy or Consulate stamp abroad are set by each country or mission, not by a UAE fee schedule, so we quote them per document. The DHA or MOHAP birth certificate fee, Arabic legal translation, the child's passport and visa fees, and our own service fee are quoted separately. The short version
- Required before you can sponsor a child — and the certificate must name both parents.
- The chain starts in the country that issued it. A certificate issued abroad cannot be fully attested from Dubai.
- For a baby born in the UAE, the process is different and much shorter — and sits inside a 120-day deadline.
- Names must match the parents' passports exactly. Mismatches surface at the very last step.
Birth certificate attestation splits into two completely different situations depending on where the child was born. People routinely read advice written for the other one.

The chain for a certificate issued abroad
Issuing registry or authority
The civil registry that issued the certificate confirms it is genuine.
Home country authentication
Notary or state-level authentication, where the jurisdiction requires it.

Legal translation into Arabic
After attestation — a translation prepared first will not carry the stamps.
Both parents must be named
This is the requirement specific to birth certificates and the one that catches people out.
Some countries issue short-form certificates naming only the mother, or omitting parental details entirely. Those cannot support a sponsorship application, because the document has to establish the relationship to the sponsoring parent.
If your certificate is a short form, or names only one parent, request the long-form or full certificate from the issuing registry first. Attesting the wrong version means paying for the whole chain twice.
Name consistency
Compare these before submitting anything
- Child's name on the certificate versus the child's passport
- Father's name on the certificate versus his passport
- Mother's name on the certificate versus her passport — including maiden versus married name
- Transliteration consistency across all documents
- Date of birth identical everywhere
Any inconsistency raises a query at stamping, after the full attestation cost has been incurred. Five minutes of checking now avoids weeks later.

Attestation fees vary substantially by issuing country, so we quote the stages abroad per document once we can see what is already on it. For the UAE MOFA step, our service charge is AED 250 per certificate, plus MOFA's AED 150. Embassy and government fees pass through at cost.
What it supports
Once attested and translated, the certificate supports child sponsorship on your residence file. The usual gates still apply — AED 4,000 monthly salary or AED 3,000 with employer accommodation, plus a registered Ejari with adequate rooms. See dependent visa sponsorship for the full requirements.
Birth certificate attestation questions
Do I need to attest my child's birth certificate for a UAE visa?
Yes. An attested birth certificate naming both parents is required to sponsor a child on your residence file. An unattested certificate or photocopy is not accepted.
My birth certificate only names one parent. Is that a problem?
Yes. The certificate must establish the relationship to the sponsoring parent, so short-form certificates naming one parent generally cannot support the application. Request the long-form certificate from the issuing registry before starting the attestation chain.
How long does birth certificate attestation take?
Three to eight weeks for a certificate issued abroad, depending on the country. For a child born in the UAE it is far shorter — typically one to three working days for the UAE MOFA link.
Can I attest a foreign birth certificate from within the UAE?
Only the final UAE MOFA link. The registry, home country authentication and UAE Embassy links must be completed in the issuing country, so the original usually has to be couriered back.
Does my child's certificate need translating?
Where it is not in Arabic, yes — by a certified legal translator, and after attestation rather than before, so the translation carries the attestation stamps.
What if the mother's name differs between the certificate and her passport?
Maiden versus married name is a common mismatch and it raises a query at stamping. Identify it before starting the chain so supporting evidence can be prepared, rather than discovering it after paying for the full attestation.
