Both parents must be named

This is the requirement specific to birth certificates and the one that catches people out.

Some countries issue short-form certificates naming only the mother, or omitting parental details entirely. Those cannot support a sponsorship application, because the document has to establish the relationship to the sponsoring parent.

Check before you start the chain

If your certificate is a short form, or names only one parent, request the long-form or full certificate from the issuing registry first. Attesting the wrong version means paying for the whole chain twice.

What it supports

Do I need to attest my child's birth certificate for a UAE visa?

Yes. An attested birth certificate naming both parents is required to sponsor a child on your residence file. An unattested certificate or photocopy is not accepted.

My birth certificate only names one parent. Is that a problem?

Yes. The certificate must establish the relationship to the sponsoring parent, so short-form certificates naming one parent generally cannot support the application. Request the long-form certificate from the issuing registry before starting the attestation chain.

How long does birth certificate attestation take?

Three to eight weeks for a certificate issued abroad, depending on the country. For a child born in the UAE it is far shorter — typically one to three working days for the UAE MOFA link.

Can I attest a foreign birth certificate from within the UAE?

Only the final UAE MOFA link. The registry, home country authentication and UAE Embassy links must be completed in the issuing country, so the original usually has to be couriered back.

Does my child's certificate need translating?

Where it is not in Arabic, yes — by a certified legal translator, and after attestation rather than before, so the translation carries the attestation stamps.

What if the mother's name differs between the certificate and her passport?

Maiden versus married name is a common mismatch and it raises a query at stamping. Identify it before starting the chain so supporting evidence can be prepared, rather than discovering it after paying for the full attestation.
