Emirates ID Renewal in Dubai
Renew from six months before expiry at the same cost. The 30-day grace period, the AED 20/day fine, and the cascade an expired card sets off.
The short version
- You can renew from six months before expiry, at the same cost. There is no reason to wait.
- Grace period is 30 days after expiry. From day 31 it is AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000.
- Your card does not renew automatically with your residence visa. They are separate applications.

The Emirates ID fine is small and capped. The disruption is neither. An expired card quietly stops Ejari registration, banking, tenancy and most government transactions — and people usually discover it mid-transaction, at the worst possible moment.

The grace period and the fine

Some sources claim there is no grace period and fines start the day after expiry. The prevailing position is a 30-day window. Because the two readings differ by AED 600, do not test it — renew inside 30 days and the question never arises.
What an expired card blocks
- Bank account operations, new accounts and many card renewals
- Telecom contracts and SIM registration changes
- Ejari registration and renewal
- Property and tenancy transactions
- Most ICP, GDRFA and Amer transactions
- Medical insurance processing at some providers
An expired card blocks Ejari. A missing Ejari blocks a family visa renewal. Dependants then start accruing their own overstay exposure at AED 50 per day each. A capped AED 1,000 card fine turns into a four-figure family problem inside a month.

Once the Emirates ID number is issued, most banking, telecom and government transactions proceed on the number alone. People routinely lose two weeks waiting for a card they did not need in hand.
Where renewals go wrong
- Assuming it renews with the visa. Separate applications, separate fees. This is the single most common reason cards lapse.
- Name spelling mismatch after a passport renewal at a different consulate — the file stalls until it is reconciled.
- Unpaid prior liabilities. Old ICP or ILOE fines against your file will hold the renewal.
- Delivery address out of date, so the card is dispatched somewhere you no longer live.
- Missed biometrics appointment — an unattended slot leaves the file open indefinitely.

How much does Emirates ID renewal cost in Dubai?
AED 100 per year of validity as the ICP base fee, plus AED 100 for the smart application, plus AED 30–70 through an authorised typing centre — roughly AED 330–370 for a standard two-year renewal. A ten-year card issued with a Golden Visa costs around AED 1,000–1,200.
How long is the grace period for Emirates ID renewal?
Thirty days after expiry. From day 31 a fine of AED 20 per day applies, capped at AED 1,000, which is reached around 80 days after expiry.
Does my Emirates ID renew automatically with my visa?
No. They are separate applications with separate fees. Renewing your residence visa does not renew the card, and this is the most common reason cards lapse unnoticed.
Can I renew my Emirates ID early?
Yes, from six months before expiry, at the same cost. There is no financial advantage to waiting and considerable downside if something else on your file needs fixing first.
Can I use my Emirates ID number before the card arrives?
Yes, for most banking, telecom and government transactions. Waiting for the physical card is usually unnecessary.
What if my Emirates ID has been expired for months?
The fine caps at AED 1,000, so beyond roughly 80 days further delay costs nothing more financially — but the transactional blocking continues and worsens as other documents lapse behind it. Renew now rather than waiting further.
