Family Visa Renewal Documents Checklist UAE 2026: ICP and GDRFA Dubai Lists, Fees and Steps

A family visa renewal documents checklist (UAE) is the list of papers a resident sponsor must produce to renew the residence permits of a spouse, children or other sponsored relatives, and it is set by ICP for most emirates and by GDRFA for Dubai-issued files. The core family visa renewal documents are the dependant’s passport and photo, the sponsor’s tenancy contract and utility bill, attested marriage and birth certificates, proof of the sponsor’s income and housing, valid health insurance and, for adults, a medical fitness result. Renewal is not a formality: ICP’s condition is that every requirement for issuing the permit must still be met when you renew.

This guide is written from the published ICP, GDRFA and u.ae pages, checked on 23 September 2026. It sets the two official lists side by side, then covers medical and fingerprint ages, insurance, attestation, the step-by-step procedure in Dubai and the other emirates, fees with sources, grace periods and five worked cases.

Family visa renewal documents checklist UAE: the short version

Start here. Each row is one document, who normally provides it, and whether the Dubai (GDRFA) and federal (ICP) lists name it. The detail on every row follows further down.

Family visa renewal in Dubai: our service, cost and turnaround

Most families who contact us have nearly all the documents. What they lack is certainty: whether the tenancy has enough validity left, whether an old attestation will still be accepted, and which authority the file belongs to. We are a PRO and visa services firm in Al Barsha 1, and we handle the whole renewal, from checking the file to handing over the new Emirates IDs, at GDRFA for Dubai files and through ICP for the other emirates. You send documents on WhatsApp and only come in person for medicals and, if ICP calls anyone, biometrics.

What a family visa renewal in Dubai costs, all in

The government fees for the residence and Emirates ID are usually the smaller part of the bill. The larger items are health insurance, which Dubai requires the sponsor to hold for each resident dependant, and medicals for every adult. These worked sums use GDRFA’s FAQ totals, AED 100 a year for each Emirates ID and the DHA regular medical fee, for a two-year permit:

Points we check that families miss

• A wife sponsoring the family. A woman can sponsor her husband and children on the same income test; GDRFA asks for a no-objection from the father where the wife sponsors the children.
• Parents. Parents are renewed under different rules. GDRFA’s current card sets a monthly income of AED 10,000 in Dubai, three months’ bank statements, suitable housing and an AED 5,000 guarantee per request, and u.ae says a parent’s residence is granted a year at a time. • A tenancy renewed in the spouse’s name. The Ejari must be in the sponsor’s name; this is a common trap.
• A newborn since the last renewal. The baby’s first permit is an issuance; where it falls close to the family’s renewals, we align them so the whole family renews on one date next time.

What “renewal” really means for your family visa renewal documents

The most useful sentence on ICP’s Renewal of residency permits service card is a short one:

GDRFA’s card for Dubai says the same thing in different words. Its service Residence renewal for family members of foreign residents “enables renewing residence permits for a foreign national’s family members under the original issuance terms.” Both authorities, in other words, apply the issuance rules again. That is why the family visa renewal documents look so similar to the documents for a first application.

The linkage rule

Family residence permits are linked to the sponsor’s own permit. ICP’s issuance card says it plainly: “Family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it.” Two practical consequences follow:

• The sponsor renews first. If your own residence has eight months left, a dependent visa renewal for your spouse cannot be issued for two years. Renew yourself, then the family.
• If the sponsor’s permit is cancelled, the family’s permits must be dealt with first. u.ae and ICP both treat dependants’ permits as tied to the sponsor, and ICP charges an AED 5,000 guarantee where a sponsor cancels his own permit without cancelling his family’s.

What stays on file and what is checked again

Family visa renewal documents that expire or change are checked every time: passports, photos, tenancy, utility bill, salary evidence, insurance and the medical. The attested marriage certificate usually sits on the sponsor’s file from the first application and is asked for again only if it is missing, was never attested, or a name has changed. Keep scans of everything, and assume anything with an expiry date will be asked for again.

Which authority handles your family residence renewal

Where your file goes is decided by the emirate that issued the sponsor’s residence, not by where the family lives or where you would prefer to apply. The first digit of the residence file number tells you the issuing emirate: 1 Abu Dhabi, 2 Dubai, 3 Sharjah, 4 Ajman, 5 Umm Al Quwain, 6 Ras Al Khaimah, 7 Fujairah.

ICP describes its renewal service as the renewal of “a residence permit linked to an Emirates ID card application”, so the family member’s Emirates ID renewal travels with the family residence renewal. The ICP family residence renewal list, item by item

These are the documents ICP publishes for renewing the residence of a family member of a foreign resident (service 377-006-003-003). This is the federal list used for files outside Dubai, and the reference point for the whole family visa renewal checklist.

Two points. First, ICP’s family residence renewal list does not include a medical report, while its lists for workers, property owners and families of UAE nationals do. We come back to that below, because other official pages say adults must pass a medical. Second, ICP’s issuance card also lists a financial guarantee of AED 3,000 per family member (up to AED 15,000); the renewal card lists no guarantee, so on the published fees it is not paid again at renewal.

If ICP’s system can retrieve a document electronically, for example your Emirates ID data or a registered tenancy, the card says you only attach it “if data retrieval fails”. Keep scans ready anyway.

Dubai: the family visa renewal documents GDRFA asks for

If the sponsor’s residence is Dubai-issued, the renewal is a GDRFA transaction. GDRFA publishes its requirements in three places, and together they make the Dubai version of the family visa renewal checklist.

1. The service card

GDRFA’s card Residence renewal for family members of foreign residents lists only three requirements: “A recent coloured personal photo with a white background for the sponsored person. A copy of the passport. The concerned authorities approve a decent medical examination if they are over the age of (18) years old.” The card is short because the sponsor’s documents are held on the sponsor file.

2. The FAQ answer on dependant renewal

GDRFA’s FAQ “What are the dependent residence renewal requirements?” gives the fuller list that Amer centres work from:

• Application form from Amer centres or through the GDRFA Dubai app, and the Emirates ID registration form;
• One photo of the sponsored person with a white background;
• The sponsored person’s original passport;
• The sponsor’s original passport and Emirates ID;
• The sponsor’s IBAN number;
• For a newborn, the original UAE birth certificate, and a valid colour copy of the mother’s passport with residence page;
• Attested tenancy contract with a minimum validity of 60 days;
• Latest electricity and water bill;
• Arabic salary certificate for government, semi-government and free zone employees;
• Attested labour contract for private-sector employees;
• The medical check-up result.

3. The sponsor file

Before a Dubai resident can sponsor anyone, GDRFA opens a sponsor file. Its card lists the sponsor’s and sponsored persons’ passports and ID cards, a salary certificate for government and semi-government sponsors, a marriage contract certified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a husband sponsoring his wife, an attested birth certificate for children, a study continuation letter or registration certificate for children, and an “attested lease contract issued by Ejari or ownership of a property issued by the Dubai Land Department”. The fee is AED 200 plus 5% VAT, AED 10 Knowledge and AED 10 Innovation. At renewal the file normally already exists; it needs updating when the sponsor’s passport, employer or address has changed.

Where the official family visa renewal documents lists disagree

Official pages are not always consistent, and it is better to see the differences than to be surprised at the counter. Here is every conflict we found while checking the family visa renewal documents for this guide.

Where sources disagree, the live screen when you apply governs, so we check every family residence renewal against the current card before we quote.

Who qualifies for dependent visa renewal: the eligibility behind the documents

Every document on the family visa renewal checklist exists to prove a condition. ICP’s issuance card, which the renewal card says must still be met, sets the conditions for a foreign resident sponsor:

• Financial solvency: “a minimum monthly income of AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 if housing is not provided.”
• Adequate housing “in proportion to the property’s capacity (owned or rented).”
• Eligible relatives: “spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 years old, and children with special needs.”
• Proof of kinship must be provided.
• Duration: the family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it.

u.ae adds that “employees can sponsor their families regardless of their job titles” if they meet the salary figure, and that Green visa holders may also sponsor first-degree relatives. Sons: 25, not 18

You will still hear that a son can only be sponsored to 18, with an extension to 25 for students. That was the older position. The current wording on both ICP’s residency cards and u.ae is “sons under 25 years old”, with no study condition attached, and GDRFA’s issuance card says “children under 25 years”. We re-checked all three on 23 September 2026.

The age still matters at every family residence renewal. A son who is 24 when you renew is sponsorable, but his dependant status ends at 25, so he needs his next status (student, employment or another residence) planned before then. Daughters

The condition is “unmarried daughters”. There is no age cut-off in the published wording. A daughter who marries stops being sponsorable as a dependant, and that change should be dealt with rather than left for the next family residence renewal to find.

Children with special needs

ICP accepts “documents proving special needs regardless of age” in place of the age test. The documents should be current, and foreign medical reports need attestation and, if not in Arabic or English, legal translation.

Medical fitness and fingerprints at dependent visa renewal: two ages, two rules

This is the most misstated part of the family visa renewal documents. There are two separate age thresholds, set by two different rules:

At renewal, u.ae says “all resident expatriates while renewing their residence visas have to undergo TB screening”, under a 2016 Cabinet Resolution amending the medical examination system. Someone found with TB scars, active TB or drug-resistant TB is issued a conditional fitness certificate and a one-year residence, with treatment in the UAE. It is not an automatic refusal.

In Dubai, the medical is done at a Dubai Health medical fitness centre. DHA’s service catalogue says a medical fitness certificate “must be issued for new applicants or residents of Dubai for the purpose of issuing or renewing their residence visa.” Outside Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Emirates Health Services runs the centres. Sponsor-side family visa renewal documents: employees

The sponsor’s documents are shared by every family member’s application. That is useful, because you prepare them once, and risky, because one weak document fails every application at the same time.

If your salary or employer changed since the last family residence renewal, the new figures apply. A new employer means a new labour contract or certificate, and if there was any gap between the old and new residence, the sponsor’s own file needs to be clean before any family file moves.

Sponsor-side family visa renewal documents: business owners and partners

An owner-manager proves the same conditions, income and adequate housing, but there is no outside employer to issue a certificate. The practical file usually looks like this. These items are not all on the family residence renewal cards; they are what the sponsor’s own residence and the typing centre rely on.

Health insurance in the family visa renewal checklist

Valid health insurance is on ICP’s list for family members, and it is a common late failure because it is arranged separately and forgotten. What the law requires depends on the emirate. u.ae states:

• Dubai: “Employers are required to provide health insurance coverage for their employees. Sponsors are required to get insurance cover for their resident dependents.”
• Abu Dhabi: “Employers and sponsors are responsible for the providing health insurance coverage for their employees and their families (1 spouse and 3 children under 18 years).”
• Nationally, from 1 January 2025: “employers are required to purchase health insurance policy as a prerequisite for applying for the issuance or renewal of residency permits of private sector employees and domestic workers,” and “dependents from the worker’s family can access the same benefits and pricing, as specified in the insurance policy.”

Two traps catch families:

• The policy ends before the new residence is issued. Valid on the day you submit is not enough if it lapses mid-process.
• The policy names the sponsor but not the dependant. Each family member being renewed must be covered.

Ask your insurer for the policy schedule listing each family member before you apply.

Family visa renewal documents by relationship

On top of the sponsor’s file, each person being renewed has their own documents. Here is the checklist by relationship.

Spouse: family visa renewal documents

• Passport valid at least 6 months, recent photo, health insurance naming her or him.
• Attested marriage certificate. GDRFA’s sponsor file asks for a marriage contract “certified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs”. If it is not in Arabic or English, a legal Arabic translation is usually needed as well.
• Medical fitness result (spouses are over 18).
• Biometrics if ICP calls for them.

A marriage certificate attested once does not need re-attesting at every family residence renewal, but it must exist on the file in attested form. Families first sponsored years ago sometimes find at the family residence renewal that the original was never attested properly. Our marriage certificate attestation service deals with that.

Sons: dependent visa renewal until 25

• Passport, photo, health insurance.
• Attested birth certificate showing both parents and the date of birth, checked against the under-25 rule at every family residence renewal.
• Medical from 18; fingerprints from 15.
• GDRFA’s sponsor file lists a study continuation letter or registration certificate for children; have it ready for sons in education.

Daughters: family visa renewal documents

• Passport, photo, health insurance, attested birth certificate.
• The condition is unmarried status; evidence may be requested where it is in doubt.
• Medical from 18; fingerprints from 15.

Children with special needs: dependent visa renewal at any age

• Current documents proving the disability, which replace the age test.
• Attested birth certificate.
• Foreign medical reports attested and, where needed, translated.

A newborn added since the last family residence renewal

A child born in the UAE needs their own residence, and the first application is an issuance, not a renewal. GDRFA’s list mentions the original UAE birth certificate and the mother’s passport and residence page for a newborn. The sequence is local birth certificate, passport from the parents’ embassy, then residence. Our newborn baby visa page sets out the order.

Step-children and children after divorce

The published cards do not cover step-children or custody. Where the sponsor is not the child’s parent, or the parents are divorced, a custody order or the other parent’s consent may be asked for. Check before you submit.

Family of Golden and Green visa holders

These sponsors follow their own rules, and ICP gives Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders the 180-day grace tier. See golden visa family sponsorship.

Attestation and translation of family visa renewal documents

ICP’s wording is “attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates”, and GDRFA’s sponsor file asks for a marriage contract “certified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs” and an “attested birth certificate”. A foreign civil document becomes usable in the UAE only after a chain of endorsements, done in order:

1. The issuing authority in your home country confirms the document.
2. Home-country authentication at state or national level, where that country requires it.
3. The home country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests the earlier seals.
4. The UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country legalises it.
5. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests it in the UAE.

An apostille does not replace this chain. The UAE is not listed as a contracting party on the Hague Conference’s status table for the Apostille Convention (checked 23 September 2026), so an apostilled certificate still needs UAE legalisation. What your country issues

The table below is practical guidance on which document to obtain and from whom, the step before attestation, and the step people most often get wrong. It is not the published rule of each country; confirm the current chain with the UAE embassy or consulate for your country before you start.

For the three nationalities we have written out in full, start with India, Pakistan and Philippines. The route is the same for personal certificates, with the issuing authority changed.

Name matching: why family visa renewal documents come back

The system matches names exactly. A family file carries the same person’s name on a passport, a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, a tenancy contract, a salary document, an insurance policy and the existing residence record. Each was produced by a different organisation, and any difference is a discrepancy.

Family residence renewal step by step in Dubai (GDRFA)

This is the order that avoids rework for a Dubai-issued file. Timings are GDRFA’s published figures for a complete file.

1. Check the sponsor’s own residence. It must be valid and must last at least as long as the family permits you want. If it expires first, renew it first.
2. Check the tenancy. Ejari registered, in the sponsor’s name, with at least 60 days’ validity left, and the latest DEWA bill.
3. Check income evidence. Attested labour contract (private sector) or Arabic salary certificate (government, semi-government, free zone). Business owners: trade licence and establishment card valid.
4. Renew or confirm health insurance for every dependant, with a policy schedule naming them.
5. Book medicals for every dependant aged 18 or over at a Dubai Health medical fitness centre.
6. Check passports and names. Six months’ validity; amend residence data first if a passport changed.
7. Submit through the GDRFA app or website with UAE Pass, or at an Amer centre, one dependent visa renewal application per family member.
8. Pay the GDRFA fees and the Emirates ID fee in the same transaction.
9. Attend biometrics if ICP sends an appointment for anyone aged 15 or over.
10. Receive the e-residence and track the Emirates ID card delivery.

Family residence renewal step by step in the other emirates (ICP)

For a residence issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, the renewal runs through ICP. The card lists these steps:

1. Submit the application through the ICP smart services website or app, logging in with UAE Pass.
2. Review and adjust the application form data.
3. Attach the required documents where the system cannot retrieve the data itself.
4. Pay the fees.
5. Complete the required procedure, which for adults includes the medical and, where called, biometrics.
6. Receive notification that the residence is issued; the Emirates ID is delivered by courier.

ICP gives a service completion time of 2 days. Before step 1, prepare the same sponsor-side documents as in Dubai: valid sponsor residence, lease and utility bill, employment certificate stating income and housing, insurance, and passports with six months’ validity. Family residence renewal fees, with their sources

These are the government fees as published. They are per family member. Typing and service centre charges sit on top, and the final figure is the one on your payment screen.

How long a family residence renewal takes

The published times are for a complete file already submitted:

• GDRFA family residence renewal: 48 hours.
• ICP family residence renewal: 2 days.
• Emirates ID (ICP card): 5 days standard.
• Medical fitness: 24 working hours for DHA’s regular service; 24 hours at EHS.

The real elapsed time depends on what is not ready: a tenancy, an insurance policy or an attestation from abroad can take far longer than the family residence renewal itself. Our UAE visa processing times guide sets out the other steps.

The document calendar worth keeping

Almost every dependent visa renewal problem is a date somebody stopped watching. Keep these in one place, with a reminder 90 days before the earliest:

• the sponsor’s residence expiry, because everything is capped by it;
• each family member’s residence expiry;
• every passport expiry on the file (six months is the floor);
• the tenancy and Ejari expiry (60 days’ validity needed in Dubai);
• each dependant’s health insurance expiry;
• trade licence and establishment card expiry, if you sponsor through your own company;
• the 25th birthday of any sponsored son, and the 15th and 18th birthdays of each child.

Ninety days is roughly what a fresh attestation from abroad takes if something is missing.

If the family visa has already expired: grace periods before a family residence renewal

This is where the official sources say different things, so here they are side by side.

ICP does not name family members in any one tier. A dependant sponsored by a resident could reasonably be read as a permit “issued with a guarantor” (60 days) or as “all other categories” (30 days). Given that, our advice is simple: plan as if you have 30 days, check the actual date on the GDRFA or ICP app (after a cancellation, it is printed on the cancellation letter), and do not rely on the six-month figure without seeing it on your own record. Changed circumstances: what they do to your family visa renewal documents

Because renewal re-tests eligibility, a change since last time is the substance of the application, not a detail.

If a family residence renewal is refused or returned

A returned application is usually a document problem. The useful question is which condition failed, because the fix differs:

• Income: the certificate’s wording, the missing housing line, or the salary itself.
• Housing: tenancy expired or under 60 days, utility bill missing, or the property too small for the family.
• Kinship: attestation missing, or a translation absent.
• Age or marital status: not fixable; the dependant status has genuinely ended.
• Sponsor’s own file: expired residence, expired establishment card, or an outstanding fine.
• Name mismatch: a data amendment, and possibly a fresh attestation.
• Medical or insurance: result not uploaded, or policy not linked to the dependant.

Family visa renewal checklist: five cases, worked through

These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.

1. Dependent visa renewal in Dubai: employee renewing a spouse and three children, one son about to turn 25

Private-sector employee on AED 9,000 a month with no company housing. Spouse, a daughter of 14, a son of 16 and a son of 24.

Position: income clears the AED 4,000 threshold. The Dubai list needs his attested labour contract, Ejari with at least 60 days left, the latest DEWA bill, insurance for all four, and medicals for the spouse and the 24-year-old. The 16-year-old is called for biometrics; the 14-year-old needs neither. The real issue is the eldest son, who turns 25 within months. Renewing him as a dependant now gives little time, so his next status is planned alongside the dependent visa renewal. The lesson: read the birth dates before the documents.

2. Family residence renewal in Sharjah: sponsor whose salary certificate did not mention housing

Earns AED 3,500 and lives in company accommodation. Family residence renewal through ICP returned for missing information.

Position: with employer housing, AED 3,000 is the threshold and he meets it. Without a housing line, the certificate reads as AED 3,500 with no housing, which is below AED 4,000. Fix: a new employment certificate stating income and that housing is provided, as ICP’s list asks, plus the accommodation lease. The lesson: the housing line decides which test applies.

3. Dependent visa renewal for a business owner whose establishment card had expired

Owns a Dubai mainland trading company; renewing a spouse and one child. Family documents complete.

Position: the family file could not move because the company’s establishment card had lapsed, which blocks immigration transactions on the company. Route: establishment card renewed first, then his own residence confirmed, then the two dependent visa renewal applications submitted the same week. The lesson: for owners, check the company before the family.

4. Marriage certificate never attested at the first application

Family first sponsored many years ago. At the family residence renewal the system asked for the marriage certificate again after a passport change, and the copy on file had no UAE attestation.

Position: ICP and GDRFA both require an attested marriage contract. With the wife’s permit close to expiry, the family could not wait for a full chain from abroad. Route: the passport data amendment was done, the certificate sent for home-country and UAE embassy attestation, then UAE MOFA attestation, and the dependent visa renewal filed once it was complete. The family watched the grace period closely and planned to the shortest published figure. The lesson: check attestation 90 days before expiry, not 10.

5. Family residence renewal in Abu Dhabi where the insurance covered only the employee

Employee on an Abu Dhabi residence; renewing a spouse and two children under 18.

Position: u.ae says Abu Dhabi employers and sponsors must insure employees and their families (one spouse and three children under 18). The employer’s policy had been set up for the employee only. Fix: policy extended to name the spouse and both children, then the ICP family residence renewal submitted with the policy schedule. The spouse also completed her medical, which in Abu Dhabi includes a chest X-ray for TB. The lesson: insurance must name each person being renewed.

We will check your documents against the current service card before charging you, tell you in writing what is missing, put the sponsor, company and family steps in the right order, book medicals and follow each application to issue, and tell you plainly when a renewal is simple enough to do yourself on the GDRFA or ICP app.

We will not promise an approval that only GDRFA or ICP can give, suggest ways around the income, housing or age rules, submit a document we know to be inaccurate, or quote you a fee that changes after you have paid.
