Family Visa Renewal Documents: Full Checklist — MIRDXB PRO guide

Key takeaways

  • Renewal is not a lighter version of the original application. ICP’s published condition is blunt: all residence issuance requirements must be maintained when applying for renewal. Everything that qualified you the first time must still be true.
  • ICP publishes nine required documents for renewing a family member’s residence. Most rejections are one of those nine being stale, unattested or in the wrong name.
  • Who you may sponsor is narrower than people assume: spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, and children with special needs. Green Residence holders may also sponsor first-degree relatives. Siblings are not sponsorable.
  • The only nationality-specific document ICP itself lists is a copy of the personal identification card for Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Everything else country-specific is about how your home documents are issued and attested.
  • A family residence cannot exceed the sponsor’s own permit. Renew yourself first, or the family renewal is capped or refused.

Family visa renewal looks like paperwork and behaves like an eligibility test. Every year, thousands of files in the UAE are returned not because the family is ineligible but because one document expired, one name was spelled differently, or one certificate was never attested in the first place and nobody noticed until the second renewal.

This guide is the complete document position: what ICP publishes as required, what changes when the sponsor is an employee versus a business owner, what each family relationship needs, what is different for the largest expatriate nationalities in Dubai, and the specific failure modes that send files back.

What “renewal” actually means — and why that matters

The single most useful sentence in ICP’s published renewal conditions is this one:

ICP’s renewal condition, verbatim in substance

“All residence issuance requirements must be maintained when applying for renewal.”

Renewal is a re-test of eligibility, not an administrative extension. If your salary fell below the threshold, if you moved into accommodation that no longer suits the family size, if your tenancy lapsed, or if a child crossed an age limit — the renewal is where that surfaces.

That reframing explains almost everything else in this guide. You are not renewing a document. You are proving, again, that you still qualify.

The linkage rule

Family residence permits are linked to the sponsor’s permit. Two consequences follow, and both are published:

  • The family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it. If your own residence has eight months left, your spouse’s renewal cannot be issued for two years.
  • If the sponsor’s visa is cancelled, the dependants’ visas require cancellation too. The family’s status does not survive independently.

This is why the order matters so much: renew yourself first, then the family. Doing it the other way round is the most common structural mistake in the whole process.

Who you can actually renew for

Eligibility is set federally, and it is narrower than the general impression. ICP publishes the sponsorable categories for a foreign resident as follows.

RelationshipSponsorable?The condition that decides it
SpouseYesAttested marriage contract as proof of kinship
DaughterYes — while unmarriedICP states “unmarried daughters”. Marital status, not age, is the gate
SonYes — under 25Age is the gate. Birth certificate proves it
Child with special needsYes — regardless of ageDocuments proving disability replace the age test
ParentsSeparate routeNot in the standard family category. Green Residence holders may sponsor first-degree relatives, which includes parents
SiblingsNoNot a published category. Siblings are second-degree relatives, so even the Green Residence first-degree provision does not reach them
On siblings — the honest answer

There is no standard residence route for sponsoring a brother or sister. It is not a matter of a higher salary or extra documents; the relationship is not in the published sponsorable categories.

What people usually do instead is a visit visa, which is a genuine and lawful option for a relative, or the sibling obtains their own residence through employment, study or one of the self-sponsored long-term routes. Anyone telling you a sibling residence can be arranged for a fee is describing something that is not in the regulations.

The son age limit: is it 18 or 25?

Where the confusion comes from — and what the rule is now

Many people, including experienced residents and some agents, will tell you a son can only be sponsored to 18, with an extension to 25 if he is in full-time study. That was the long-standing position for years, and it is why the number is still quoted so widely.

The current published rule is different. Both ICP’s residency service card and the UAE Government portal state that a foreign resident may sponsor “sons under 25 years old” — with no study condition attached to reach 25. We re-checked both directly in September 2026.

So if someone quotes 18 at you, they are quoting the older rule. The practical significance is large: a 20-year-old son who is not studying is sponsorable under the current wording, where under the old rule he would not have been.

The son-turns-25 problem

This is the most predictable renewal failure there is, and it is entirely avoidable. A son sponsored as a dependant ages out at 25. The birth certificate that proved he was eligible last time proves he is ineligible this time.

There is no discretion in the arithmetic. What there is, is planning time: a son approaching 25 needs an alternative status lined up — a student residence, an employment residence, or one of the self-sponsored routes — before the dependant status lapses, not after.

The daughter question

ICP’s wording is “unmarried daughters” without an age qualifier attached in the way it is for sons. The operative condition is marital status. A daughter who marries ceases to be sponsorable as a dependant, and that is a change of circumstance that must be reflected rather than left unmentioned at renewal.

The master checklist: what ICP requires for a family renewal

These are the documents ICP publishes for renewing the residence of a family member of a foreign resident. This is the authoritative list, not a general one.

#DocumentWhat actually goes wrong
1PassportMust be valid for no less than 6 months. A renewed passport also means the residence data must be amended
2Personal photoMust meet the stated specification — background, recency, framing
3Water / electricity billDEWA in Dubai. Must be in the sponsor’s name and current, proving the address is genuinely occupied
4Lease agreementRegistered tenancy contract — Ejari in Dubai. Expired tenancy is one of the top rejection causes
5Proof of kinship — attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificatesThe word doing the work is attested. An unattested certificate is not proof
6Birth certificates to verify children’s ages, or documents proving disability for special-needs children regardless of ageAge is checked at every renewal, not just the first
7Employment certificate confirming the family’s monthly income and housingMust show income and whether housing is provided — the two together decide which salary threshold applies
8Valid health insuranceMust be valid at submission and cover the person being renewed
9Copy of the personal identification cardAfghanistan / Iran / IraqThe only nationality-specific document on ICP’s own list

Note what is not on that list: no repeat medical fitness test is published among the renewal documents for family members. Medical fitness and biometrics are governed by age, and the two thresholds are different numbers — which is the most misstated point in this whole subject.

Medical fitness and fingerprints: the two age thresholds

The two ages that decide what a child actually has to do

Medical fitness — age 18. The UAE Government portal states that family members to be sponsored who have completed the age of 18 must undergo and pass medical fitness tests at approved health centres in the UAE. Children under 18 do not sit the medical.

Fingerprints and signature — age 15. ICP requires individuals who have completed 15 years of age to complete the fingerprint and signature procedures through its service centres. Children under 15 do not give fingerprints.

Those two thresholds are 15 and 18, not one number applied to both. Put together, they produce three clear bands for a child on a family file:

Child’s ageMedical fitnessFingerprints and signatureWhat they still need
Under 15NoNoPassport, photo, attested birth certificate, valid health insurance
15 to 17NoYesThe above, plus attendance at a service centre for biometrics
18 and overYesYesThe above, plus a passed medical fitness test at an approved centre

This matters practically. Parents renewing a young child frequently expect to book a medical and are told none is needed; parents of a 16-year-old expect nothing and are asked for biometrics. Neither is an inconsistency — they are two different rules with two different ages.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the emirate handling your file and the category of permit can add steps, and the TB screening position on renewal is set by Cabinet Resolution rather than by the family service card. Check the service card for your exact category before assuming, particularly for a child close to either threshold.

The eligibility conditions behind the documents

The documents exist to prove a set of conditions. ICP publishes those too, and knowing them tells you why each document is asked for.

  • Passport valid for no less than six months.
  • The sponsor must hold a valid UAE residence permit.
  • Financial solvency: a minimum monthly income of AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 if housing is not provided. This is why the employment certificate must state the housing position — it selects the threshold.
  • Adequate housing for the family, in proportion to the property’s capacity, owned or rented.
  • Proof of kinship must be provided.
  • The family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it.

The salary thresholds are federal and they are the floor, not a guarantee — individual emirates and categories can apply additional conditions. We deal with the thresholds and the edge cases in our guide to the family visa salary requirement in Dubai.

When the sponsor is an employee

ICP’s published requirement is an employment certificate confirming the family’s monthly income and housing. That single line is what a salaried sponsor has to satisfy, and the practical file that satisfies it looks like this.

DocumentWhy it is asked forThe detail that matters
Salary certificate from the employerProves income and housing provisionMust state whether accommodation is provided — this selects the AED 3,000 or AED 4,000 threshold. A certificate silent on housing is an incomplete certificate
Labour contractConfirms the employment relationshipThe MoHRE-registered contract governs, not the HR offer letter. See our contract types guide
Bank statementsCorroborates that the stated salary is actually receivedUsually recent months, stamped. Salary credits should match the certificate
Sponsor’s passport and Emirates IDIdentity and valid residenceThe sponsor’s own residence must be valid and must outlast the family permit being requested
Registered tenancy contract and DEWA billProves adequate housingBoth in the sponsor’s name. See Ejari and family visas
The housing clause decides your threshold

AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 without. A sponsor earning AED 3,500 with no company accommodation does not meet the threshold; the same sponsor with employer housing does.

This is why a salary certificate that omits the housing line gets returned. It is not pedantry — without it, the authority cannot tell which test to apply.

If your salary changed since the last renewal

Because renewal re-tests eligibility, a salary reduction matters. So does a change of employer: a new labour contract means a new employment certificate, and if there was a gap between the old and new residence, the sponsor’s own status needs to be clean before any family file moves.

When the sponsor is a business owner

An owner-manager satisfies the same underlying condition — demonstrated financial solvency and adequate housing — but evidences it differently, because there is no third-party employer to issue a certificate.

DocumentWhy it is asked forThe detail that matters
Valid trade licenceProves the business exists and is currentAn expired licence stops the file. See trade licence renewal
Establishment card (immigration card)The company’s registration with the immigration authorityMust be valid. This gates every visa transaction on the company file — see establishment card renewal
Memorandum of Association or partners’ listProves ownership and shareholdingMust show the sponsor as an owner or partner, matching the passport name exactly
Share certificate, where issuedEvidences the sponsor’s stakeFree zones commonly issue these; mainland relies on the MOA
Company bank statementsDemonstrates the business is trading and the sponsor’s income is realWhere the owner draws a salary, personal statements are usually needed as well
Salary certificate issued by the company to its owner-managerServes the same function as an employee’s certificateStill must state income and the housing position
Registered tenancy contract and DEWA billAdequate housingResidential tenancy in the sponsor’s name — a commercial lease does not substitute
The failure that only happens to business owners

Owner-sponsored family files fail overwhelmingly for company-side reasons rather than family-side ones: a lapsed trade licence, an expired establishment card, an unrenewed licence blocked by an outstanding matter, or a shareholding document whose name does not match the passport.

The family’s own paperwork can be flawless and the file still will not move. If you sponsor family through your own company, check the company documents first — they are the usual culprit.

Free zone versus mainland

The evidencing differs slightly. Free zone companies typically issue share certificates and their own establishment documentation through the zone authority, and some zones handle immigration through the zone rather than directly. Mainland companies rely on the MOA and the DED licence. The condition being proved is identical; the documents proving it are not.

Documents by family relationship

On top of the sponsor’s own file, each person being renewed brings their own proof of kinship. This is where attestation bites.

Spouse

  • Attested marriage contract or certificate. This is the proof of kinship for a spouse, and the attestation is not optional.
  • Passport valid at least six months, personal photo, valid health insurance.
  • Where the marriage certificate is not in Arabic or English, a legal translation into Arabic by an approved translator is generally required alongside the attested original.

A marriage certificate attested once does not need re-attesting at every renewal — but it does need to exist in attested form on the file. Families who were sponsored years ago under looser scrutiny sometimes discover at renewal that the original was never properly attested.

Sons

  • Attested birth certificate showing both parents’ names and the date of birth.
  • The date of birth is checked against the under-25 condition at every renewal.
  • Passport, photo, health insurance.

Daughters

  • Attested birth certificate establishing parentage.
  • The condition is unmarried status. Where marital status is in question, evidence of it may be requested.
  • Passport, photo, health insurance.

Children with special needs

  • Documents proving the disability, which replace the age test entirely — ICP’s wording is “regardless of age”.
  • Attested birth certificate establishing parentage.
  • Medical documentation should be current and, where foreign-issued, attested and translated.

Newborns added between renewals

A child born in the UAE needs its own residence, and the clock starts at birth. The birth certificate is issued locally, which removes the foreign-attestation problem but introduces a different sequence — local birth certificate, passport from the parents’ embassy, then residence. Our newborn baby visa page covers the order.

Parents

Parent sponsorship is a separate route, not part of the standard family category. ICP’s published family-member category for a foreign resident covers spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs; Green Residence holders are additionally entitled to sponsor first-degree relatives, which includes parents.

For other residents, sponsoring parents runs under its own conditions, which are more demanding than the standard family route and typically involve a higher income requirement, a deposit, and evidence that the parents are dependent on the sponsor. We do not publish a specific salary figure for the parents route here, because ICP’s family service card does not state one — and an invented number is worse than none. Our parents visa sponsorship page deals with that route directly.

Country-specific documents: what changes by nationality

Two things vary by nationality, and it is worth separating them cleanly because they are often confused.

  • What ICP itself requires. There is exactly one nationality-specific document on ICP’s published list.
  • How your home country issues and authenticates civil documents. This is where the real variation lives — not in UAE rules, but in what your country hands you and what has to happen to it before the UAE will accept it.

The one nationality rule ICP publishes

Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq

ICP’s required-documents list for both issuing and renewing a family residence includes: a copy of the personal identification card (Afghanistan / Iran / Iraq).

If you hold one of these three nationalities, this is an additional document on top of the standard nine — and it appears on ICP’s own service card, not in informal guidance.

The attestation chain — the part that applies to everyone else

Your marriage certificate and your children’s birth certificates are proof of kinship, and ICP’s wording is “attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates”. A foreign civil document becomes usable in the UAE only after a chain of endorsements, run in order:

  • The issuing authority in your home country confirms the document is genuine.
  • Home-country authentication at state or federal level, where that jurisdiction requires it.
  • The home country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests the preceding seals.
  • The UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country legalises it.
  • UAE MOFA attests it on arrival.

An apostille does not replace this chain. That is the single most expensive assumption expatriates make, and we cover why in apostille vs attestation. The order matters too — see the attestation process order and what it costs.

What your country actually issues

The table below is about which document you need to obtain and from whom — the step before attestation, and the step people get wrong most often. Requirements are set by each country’s authorities and by the UAE mission there, and they change; confirm the current chain with the UAE embassy or consulate for your country before you start.

CountryCivil documents typically come fromThe pitfall we see most
IndiaBirth and marriage records from the local municipal authority or registrar; central attestation handled through the Ministry of External Affairs after state-level authenticationSingle-name passports. Where the passport carries no surname, the name will not match a birth certificate that lists given name and family name separately. Also: marriage registered under different personal-law statutes produces different certificates
PakistanComputerised birth and marriage certificates from NADRA; the Nikah Nama registered through the Union Council; foreign-ministry attestation thereafterPresenting the Nikah Nama alone. It is in Urdu and is the religious contract; the computerised NADRA certificate is usually what is wanted, plus legal Arabic translation
PhilippinesBirth and marriage certificates from the PSA (Philippine Statistics Authority), authenticated by the Department of Foreign AffairsUsing a local civil registrar copy instead of the PSA copy. Also the Filipino naming convention — the mother’s maiden name as middle name — frequently mismatches the passport
BangladeshBirth registration through the local Union Parishad or City Corporation; marriage via the registered Kabin Nama; foreign-ministry attestation thereafterHandwritten or late-registered birth records that do not match the passport date of birth
NepalBirth and marriage records from the local ward office or District Administration Office; foreign-ministry attestation thereafterTransliteration variance between Devanagari records and the Roman-script passport
Sri LankaBirth and marriage certificates from the Registrar General’s Department; foreign-ministry attestation thereafterCertificates issued in Sinhala or Tamil requiring certified English or Arabic translation before the chain will run
EgyptCivil registry birth records and registered marriage contracts; foreign-ministry attestation thereafterArabic-script name variants across passport, certificate and existing UAE records
Jordan, Syria, LebanonCivil registry extracts and registered marriage contractsDocuments already in Arabic still require the full legalisation chain — being in Arabic is not attestation
UK, Ireland, Australia, South AfricaGeneral Register Office or equivalent national registryReliance on an apostille, which does not complete the UAE chain
Nigeria, Kenya, GhanaNational population or civil registration authorityAffidavit-based or late-registered birth documents, which are frequently queried

For the three nationalities where we have written the process out in full, start here: India, Pakistan, Philippines. For the certificates themselves, see marriage certificate attestation and birth certificate attestation.

The name-matching problem — the real reason files get rejected

If we could fix one thing across every nationality, it would be this. The system matches names exactly. It does not reason about them.

A family file typically carries the same person’s name across a passport, a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, a tenancy contract, a salary certificate, a health insurance policy and an existing residence record. Every one of those was produced by a different organisation, and any difference between them is a discrepancy.

Mismatch patternWho it hitsWhat to do
No surname on the passportCommonly Indian nationals, and some South Asian and Indonesian documentsKeep the rendering identical everywhere; do not let one document invent a surname
Middle name present or absentFilipino nationals especially, where the mother’s maiden name is the middle nameUse the passport rendering as the master and match everything to it
Patronymic chains — bin, binti, son-of constructionsArab, Malay and some South Asian naming systemsInclude or omit consistently; never mix
Transliteration varianceArabic, Urdu, Devanagari, Sinhala, Tamil, Bengali, Cyrillic scriptsFix the Roman spelling once, from the passport, and apply it to every translation
Married name versus maiden nameWomen whose passport was reissued after marriageThe marriage certificate is the bridge — keep it attested and on file
Date format ambiguityAny country using day-month order against month-day recordsCheck the date of birth digit by digit against the passport
The rule that prevents most of this

The passport is the master record. Every other document should match it exactly — spelling, spacing, order, and the presence or absence of each name component.

Where a document genuinely cannot be changed, the answer is not to hope it passes. It is to have the discrepancy formally addressed, because a mismatch discovered at renewal costs a data amendment, a fee and a delay — and sometimes a fresh attestation from your home country, which is measured in weeks.

Health insurance: the quiet failure

Valid health insurance is on ICP’s required-documents list, and it is a common late-stage failure because it is the one document that tends to be arranged by somebody else and forgotten.

Two specific traps:

  • The policy expires before the new residence is issued. Insurance that is valid on the day you submit but lapses mid-process will be queried.
  • The policy covers the sponsor but not the dependant. Family cover has to name the person being renewed.

Health cover is mandatory for residents in Dubai, and the renewal is the point at which a gap becomes visible. Check the expiry date and the named members before you submit anything.

Where the file actually goes

Two channels exist, and which one you use is decided by where your residence file sits — not by preference.

Your fileChannelPublic counter
DubaiGDRFA DubaiAmer centres, GDRFA app and website
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, RAK, FujairahICPICP website, UAEICP app, typing centres
Emirates ID — any emirateICP, alwaysICP centres for biometrics

Both channels require UAE Pass for digital submission. A family renewal therefore touches ICP even for a Dubai file, because the Emirates ID renewal rides along with the residence. Our GDRFA guide and ICP guide set out each authority in full, and ICP vs GDRFA covers the split.

Renewing several family members at once

Each dependant is a separate application with its own fee, but they share the sponsor-side evidence — the salary certificate, the tenancy contract, the utility bill. In practice that means one weak sponsor-side document fails every application simultaneously, which is why the sponsor’s file is worth getting right before submitting anything for anyone.

Two worked examples

Abstract checklists hide the sequencing problems. Here is how two typical Dubai families actually look.

Example one: salaried employee, family of four

An Indian national on a mainland Dubai employment residence, earning AED 9,000 with no company accommodation, renewing a spouse, a 14-year-old daughter and a 24-year-old son.

StepWhat it needsThe risk in this file
Sponsor’s own residenceRenewed first, with enough validity to cover the family permitsIf his own permit has under a year left, the family permits are capped to it
Income evidenceSalary certificate stating AED 9,000 and that housing is not providedClears the AED 4,000 threshold comfortably — but only if the housing line is stated
HousingRegistered Ejari plus current DEWA bill in his nameTenancy renewals and visa renewals rarely align; an expired Ejari is the classic stall
SpouseAttested marriage certificate, passport, photo, insuranceIndian marriage certificate must have completed the full chain to UAE MOFA, with Arabic translation
Daughter, 14Attested birth certificate, passport, photo, insuranceName order on an Indian birth certificate versus the passport
Son, 24Attested birth certificate proving he is under 25This is the file’s real problem. He ages out during the permit. A two-year renewal cannot run past his 25th birthday

The son is the whole story here. Renewing him as a dependant now buys months, not years, and the family needs his next status — student, employment, or self-sponsored — identified before the dependant permit lapses. Discovering this at the counter is the difference between a planned transition and a scramble.

Example two: business owner, family of three

A Pakistani national who owns a Dubai mainland trading company, sponsoring a spouse and a 6-year-old son.

StepWhat it needsThe risk in this file
Trade licenceValid, not in a renewal windowChecked first — an expired licence stops everything downstream
Establishment cardValidExpires quietly and is the most common owner-side blocker
Ownership proofMOA or partners’ list naming him exactly as the passport doesTransliteration of the name across the MOA, licence and passport
Income evidenceSalary certificate from his own company, plus company and personal bank statementsThe certificate must still state the housing position
HousingResidential Ejari and DEWA bill in his nameA commercial lease does not satisfy the adequate-housing test
SpouseProof of kinshipSubmitting the Nikah Nama alone. The computerised NADRA marriage certificate, attested and translated, is generally what is wanted
Son, 6Attested NADRA birth certificateA hospital-issued or handwritten record in place of the computerised certificate

Note the pattern: in the employee’s file the risks were about ages and names; in the owner’s file, half the risks are company documents that have nothing to do with the family at all. That is the practical difference between the two sponsor types, and it is why the checklists differ.

The document calendar worth keeping

Almost every renewal problem is a date somebody stopped tracking. Six dates decide whether a family renewal is routine or urgent:

  • Sponsor’s residence expiry — everything is capped by it.
  • Each family member’s residence expiry — and which grace tier applies.
  • Every passport expiry on the file — six months’ validity is the floor.
  • Tenancy contract expiry — and the Ejari registration behind it.
  • Health insurance expiry — for each named dependant, not just the sponsor.
  • Trade licence and establishment card expiry, if you sponsor through your own company.
  • The 25th birthday of any sponsored son.

Put them in one place with a reminder ninety days ahead of the earliest. Ninety days is roughly the time needed to obtain a fresh attestation from abroad if something turns out to be missing — which is the one problem you cannot solve quickly at any price.

What it costs

These are the fees ICP publishes on its Renewal of residency permits service card. They are federal channel fees; Dubai files processed through GDRFA and Amer carry their own schedule, and typing-centre charges sit on top of either.

ItemFeeNotes
Application feeAED 100Per application
Renewal fee for the residence permitAED 100 per yearScales with the permit duration granted
Smart service feeAED 100Digital channel charge
Overstay fine after the grace period endsAED 50 per dayRuns from the day after the grace period, by permit type
Emirates ID replacement to update displayed informationAED 150Applies on a data amendment, plus AED 100 smart service fee

ICP states a service completion duration of 2 days for the renewal transaction itself. That is the processing time for a clean file — not the total elapsed time for a family that still needs attestation, insurance or a tenancy contract sorted out first.

For a fuller estimate across the whole family, use our visa cost estimator. What we charge on top of government cost is set out on our fees page.

Timing, and what happens if you are late

ICP grants a grace period after expiry or cancellation, and it is tiered — 180, 90, 60 or 30 days depending on the category of permit. Most standard family dependants fall into the 30-day tier, while family members of Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders sit at 180.

Because the tiers decide so much, we set them out in full, with who falls into each, in our guide to the residence visa grace period in the UAE. Read that before assuming which one applies to you — the difference between 30 and 180 days is the difference between comfortable and urgent.

Separately, u.ae states that dependants are granted a six-month grace period from the date of expiry or cancellation of their visas to obtain a new residence permit, and that if the sponsor fails to renew or cancel dependants’ visas he could be liable to pay a fine. Where published positions differ in framing, the operative rule for your file is the one attached to your permit category — which is exactly why we point you at the category, not a single number.

The order to do it in

Sequence prevents more problems than diligence does.

  • Renew the sponsor first. The family permit cannot exceed the sponsor’s, so a short sponsor permit caps everyone behind it.
  • Check the company documents next, if you are an owner. Trade licence and establishment card validity gate the whole file.
  • Fix the tenancy. Registered contract and a current utility bill in the sponsor’s name.
  • Confirm health insurance is valid and names each dependant.
  • Verify attestation on the marriage and birth certificates — especially if the family was first sponsored years ago.
  • Check ages and marital status against the son-under-25 and unmarried-daughter conditions.
  • Match every name to the passport before submission.
  • Then submit, through ICP’s channels or, for a Dubai file, through GDRFA and Amer.

Changed circumstances you must not leave unmentioned

Renewal re-tests eligibility, so a change since last time is not a detail — it is the substance of the application.

What changedWhat it affects
New passport for anyone on the fileResidence data must be amended; the old passport number no longer matches
Salary reduced, or housing allowance removedMay move you across the AED 3,000 / AED 4,000 threshold
Changed employerNew employment certificate and contract; sponsor’s own status must be clean
Moved homeNew tenancy contract and utility bill; adequate-housing test reapplies
Son turned or is turning 25Dependant eligibility ends; an alternative status is needed
Daughter marriedDependant eligibility ends
New childNeeds its own residence, on its own timeline
Divorce or bereavementChanges the sponsorship basis entirely; separate provisions exist for widows and divorced women
Sponsor moved to Golden or Green ResidenceChanges grace tier to 180 days and can change who may be sponsored

If the renewal is refused

A refusal is usually a document problem wearing a serious face. The productive response is to establish which of the conditions failed, because the remedy differs completely.

  • Income below threshold — the salary certificate, the housing line, or the underlying salary. Sometimes it is only the certificate’s wording.
  • Housing not adequate or not evidenced — tenancy registration, utility bill, or property capacity against family size.
  • Kinship not proven — attestation missing or translation absent.
  • Age or marital status — not fixable; the status has genuinely ended.
  • Sponsor’s own file — expired residence, expired establishment card, or an outstanding fine or circular.
  • Name mismatch — a data amendment, and possibly fresh attestation.

Our guide to why family visas get rejected works through the causes in order of frequency.

Family visa renewal questions

What documents are required to renew a family visa in the UAE?

ICP publishes nine: passport valid at least six months, personal photo, water or electricity bill, lease agreement, proof of kinship (attested marriage contract and children’s birth certificates), birth certificates verifying children’s ages or disability documents, an employment certificate confirming monthly income and housing, valid health insurance, and a copy of the personal identification card for Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq nationals.

What salary do I need to sponsor family in the UAE?

A minimum monthly income of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 if your employer provides housing. The employment certificate must state the housing position, because that is what selects which threshold applies.

Can I sponsor my brother or sister?

No. Siblings are not in the published sponsorable categories. Green Residence holders may sponsor first-degree relatives, and siblings are second-degree. The practical alternatives are a visit visa, or the sibling obtaining their own residence through work, study or a self-sponsored route.

Until what age can I sponsor my son?

Under 25. The birth certificate is checked at every renewal, so a son approaching 25 needs an alternative status arranged before the dependant status lapses.

Is there an age limit for sponsoring a daughter?

ICP’s condition is “unmarried daughters”. Marital status is the operative gate rather than an age cut-off in the way it is for sons.

Can I sponsor a child with special needs beyond the age limit?

Yes. ICP accepts documents proving disability regardless of age, in place of the birth certificate age test.

Does the marriage certificate need to be attested?

Yes. ICP’s wording is “attested marriage contract”. A foreign certificate needs the full legalisation chain ending with UAE MOFA, and a legal Arabic translation where it is not already in Arabic or English. An apostille alone does not complete the chain.

Do children need a medical test for a family visa?

Only from age 18. The UAE Government portal states that family members to be sponsored who have completed the age of 18 must undergo and pass medical fitness tests at approved health centres. Children under 18 do not sit the medical.

Do children need fingerprints for a family visa?

From age 15. ICP requires individuals who have completed 15 years of age to complete fingerprint and signature procedures at its service centres. Children under 15 do not give fingerprints. Note the thresholds differ: fingerprints from 15, medical from 18.

Is the son sponsorship age limit 18 or 25?

Under 25 on the current published rule. Both ICP’s residency service card and the UAE Government portal state a foreign resident may sponsor sons under 25 years old, with no study condition attached. The figure 18 was the older rule, which allowed an extension to 25 for sons in full-time study, and it is still widely quoted.

Do I need a new medical test to renew a family visa?

No repeat medical is listed among the renewal documents on ICP’s family renewal card. Medical fitness applies from age 18 under the sponsorship requirements, and a separate Cabinet Resolution governs TB screening on renewal. Check the service card for your exact category and emirate.

How much does family visa renewal cost?

On ICP’s published federal schedule: AED 100 application fee, AED 100 per year of the permit, and AED 100 smart service fee. Overstaying beyond the grace period costs AED 50 per day. Dubai files through GDRFA and Amer carry their own schedule.

What happens if the family visa has already expired?

A tiered grace period applies — 180, 90, 60 or 30 days depending on permit category, with most standard dependants in the 30-day tier. After it ends, AED 50 per day accrues.

Can my family’s visa be longer than mine?

No. The family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it, which is why you renew yourself first.

I am a business owner rather than an employee. What changes?

The condition is the same — demonstrated income and adequate housing — but you evidence it with a valid trade licence, establishment card, MOA or share certificate, company and personal bank statements, and a salary certificate issued by your own company. Owner-sponsored files usually fail on company documents rather than family ones.

Does my Ejari have to be in my name?

The tenancy contract and the utility bill are there to prove the sponsor has secured adequate housing, so they should be in the sponsor’s name. See our guide on Ejari and family visas.

For what the medical actually screens for, the three occupational fee tiers and what happens if something is found, see our UAE visa medical fitness test guide.

Please note. The document list, eligibility conditions, fees and grace tiers in this guide are taken from ICP’s published service cards and the UAE Government portal, checked in September 2026. Country rows describe which authority typically issues civil documents and the problems we see most often — they are practical guidance, not the published rules of those countries, and the attestation chain should be confirmed with the UAE embassy or consulate for your country. Requirements are set by the authorities and change; where a figure is not published, this guide says so rather than estimating it. General information, not legal advice.

Having the family file handled

Family applications are the ones where a single missing document holds up several people at once — a spouse, children, and often a school placement dated to a term start.

We run these end to end as part of our visa and PRO services in Dubai, including the attestation and Ejari steps that usually sit in front of them.
