Emirates ID and Visa Linking 2026: How Your Emirates ID and Residence Are Linked at Renewal, Cancellation, New Passport and Travel

Emirates ID and visa linking is the way a UAE resident’s Emirates ID card and residence permit are tied to the same record, so that the Emirates ID card itself is your proof of residence: since April 2022 the residence is no longer stuck in your passport, the residence and the Emirates ID are applied for together, Emirates ID card validity follows the residence record, and cancelling the residence cancels the card. The residence is decided by GDRFA Dubai for Dubai files and by ICP for the other six emirates. The card is always produced by ICP. Behind both sits your passport number, which is how airlines and border control find your residence when you travel.

This guide explains how that link works and what happens to it at each point in a resident’s life: issue, renewal, cancellation, a change of employer or sponsor, a new passport, long periods abroad, and travel. It also covers how to get a proof of residence, now that there is no visa sticker, when someone asks for “a copy of your visa”, and how to put the records right when they drift apart.

Emirates ID and visa linking: how MIRDXB PRO helps

Government fees are passed on at cost from the ICP or GDRFA schedule, and you get the receipts. The published lines are in the fee table further down: for example AED 100 per year of card validity plus a AED 100 smart services fee on a new or renewed card, and AED 150 + AED 100 for an ICP data amendment with a replacement card. From visa sticker to Emirates ID card: what changed in 2022

Until 2022 a UAE residence visa was a sticker glued into a page of your passport, and the Emirates ID was a separate card you applied for alongside it. The two were linked in the government systems, but people treated them as two documents: the visa sticker was the proof of residence, the Emirates ID card proved identity. That changed in stages during 2022.

ICP’s announcement of 5 April 2022

On 5 April 2022 ICP announced the cancellation of the residence sticker for foreigners, effective 11 April 2022. Its statement made four points that still define how the link works today:

• The Emirates ID card replaces the visa sticker as proof of residence. “The Emirates ID card issued to the foreigner residing in the UAE will serve as an alternative to prove his residence.”
• One application for both. “The residence and the identity card applications will be joined together in a new unified form that includes the issuance and renewal of the residence and identity card services in one application.”
• The Emirates ID card carries what the visa sticker carried. The new card for residents “includes all the details mentioned previously in the residence sticker”, with “personal and professional data, the issuing entity and other readable data on the surface of the card”.
• Airlines read the residence through the passport. ICP said it had worked with the aviation sector so that holders of valid residence permits can be checked “through the use of the passport reader available at the platforms of companies operating in the air transport sector at airports”.

ICP also said residents could obtain their residency details through a printed form, the smart application and the website. In January 2023 ICP described the change as “shortening the steps for issuing residency, which means saving time, effort, and costs for customers”, and noted that the UAEICP app gives an electronic copy of the card.

16 May 2022: separate ID services stop, except in Dubai

On 16 May 2022, according to reports in Gulf Today and Khaleej Times quoting ICP, separate Emirates ID issuance and renewal services for residents were suspended and replaced by the unified form, in every emirate except Dubai. What’s On reported officials saying that in Dubai the two applications “will continue to be processed separately, at least for now”. Applications already in progress before 16 May were finished the old way, with a visa sticker.

Dubai follows

The Dubai visa sticker ended later. The immigration law firm Fragomen reported on 14 December 2022 that Dubai had eliminated the residence visa stamp endorsement and that foreign nationals would be issued an Emirates ID “which will serve as their residency document”. We did not find a GDRFA announcement of the date on GDRFA’s current website, so we rely on that report for the timing.

Old visa stickers are still in many passports. A visa sticker from before 2022 in an expired passport means nothing today. What counts is the current residence record and the Emirates ID card that reflects it.

Emirates ID and visa linking in one application

The Emirates ID and residence visa are now applied for together.

For the resident, the most practical effect of linking is that you no longer file two separate applications. How that looks depends on the authority that holds your residence.

Other emirates: ICP’s unified service

ICP’s “Issuing Residency Permit” card describes the service as enabling “the issuance of a new residence permit linked to an Emirates ID card application”, with the Emirates ID card delivered through authorised courier companies. The residence lines on that card are an application fee of AED 100, AED 100 per year of residence, a AED 100 smart services fee, and AED 500 if a status adjustment is needed because you are already in the country. The card lines come from ICP’s identity card service: AED 100 per year of validity for residents and a AED 100 smart services fee. ICP publishes a completion time of 2 days for the residence and 5 days for the card, plus courier delivery.

Dubai: GDRFA for the residence, ICP for the card

GDRFA’s residence cards (for example “Issuing residence permits for the private sector” and “Renewing a residence permit for the private sector”) list only the residence lines: AED 200, Knowledge Dirham AED 10, Innovation Dirham AED 10, AED 500 “in-country” fee, AED 20 delivery, and AED 100 more for each year beyond two, with a 48-hour service time. They do not list the Emirates ID lines. In practice, a Dubai residence application at Amer or on the GDRFA app collects the ICP card lines in the same transaction, and ICP produces the Emirates ID card. The itemised payment screen on the day is what you pay.

Because Dubai kept a separate route in 2022, ICP’s stand-alone “Identity Card Renewal” service still matters: ICP lists it for citizens, residents and GCC citizens, across all emirates. That is how a Dubai resident whose card and residence have drifted apart, or whose card is expiring on its own, can deal with the card without touching the residence.

Fingerprints and signature are required from age 15, and residents aged 70 or over whose prints are already on file are exempt under ICP’s senior citizens page. How appointments are issued and what happens at the centre is in our Emirates ID biometrics appointment guide.

Emirates ID and visa linking behind the scenes: three records, two authorities

“Linked” sounds like a single database. In reality at least three official records describe a working resident in Dubai, held by different bodies, and one more sits outside the UAE altogether: your passport.

The residence file number’s first digit tells you the issuing emirate: 1 Abu Dhabi, 2 Dubai, 3 Sharjah, 4 Ajman, 5 Umm Al Quwain, 6 Ras Al Khaimah, 7 Fujairah. A 2 means GDRFA holds the residence; anything else means ICP. Our ICP vs GDRFA guide explains the split in detail.

How the records talk to each other

Neither ICP nor GDRFA publishes a technical description of how the residence file and the identity record are synchronised, and we will not invent one. What the official pages do show is the order of events and who owns each step:

1. The residence authority decides. GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (elsewhere) approves, renews, amends or cancels the residence.
2. ICP issues or updates the Emirates ID card. It is produced by ICP and, for residents, its validity is “linked to residence permit duration” (ICP’s new identity card service).
3. Cancellation flows through. u.ae states that the Emirates ID is cancelled automatically as part of the residence cancellation, and the sponsor’s cancellation request is what triggers it: “Once approved, the Emirates ID card is deactivated in the system.”
4. Other bodies read the result. Airlines read the residence through the passport reader (ICP). Border control reads it at the counter or the smart gate. Banks, telecoms and government portals check the Emirates ID number against the government record through their own connections.

ICP’s January 2023 note mentions “E-Link Technology” on the new cards, and the resident card carries a chip. Beyond that, the mechanics are not public. For you, the rule is simple: the residence record is the master, the Emirates ID card follows it, and the passport number on the residence record must be the passport you actually carry.

What your Emirates ID card proves, and what it does not

Since the visa sticker went, the Emirates ID card is the proof of residence people ask to see. It is worth knowing exactly what it can and cannot tell them.

What is on the Emirates ID card

ICP says the resident Emirates ID card carries what the visa sticker used to carry: “personal and professional data, the issuing entity and other readable data on the surface of the card”, with more held electronically on the chip. So a resident card shows who you are, that you hold UAE residence, which authority issued it, your profession, and an expiry date that matched the residence when the card was produced.

What the residence page shows

The details that the Emirates ID card does not show in full sit on your residence page in the UAEICP app (and in the GDRFA channels for Dubai files). The National described the digital visa page in September 2024 as showing the file number, the unified number, the sponsor’s name, the profession and the expiry. That page is the closest thing to the old visa sticker, and it is what we ask clients to send when we need to check a record.

What the Emirates ID card cannot tell anyone

• Whether the residence is still live today. A card printed last year still looks valid after the residence has been cancelled. The cancellation is in the system, not on the plastic. That is why banks and authorities check the number online instead of trusting the card.
• Whether the passport on file is your current one. The card does not show your passport number. If you have renewed your passport and not amended the residence, the Emirates ID card looks fine but the residence record is stale.
• Your sponsor’s current status. A family member’s card does not show if the sponsor’s own residence has lapsed.
• Your labour status. A work permit cancellation at MOHRE is a separate record; the Emirates ID card says nothing about it until the residence record itself is cancelled.

Emirates ID and visa linking: card validity vs residence validity

For a resident, the Emirates ID card is not a standalone document with its own lifespan. ICP’s “New Identity Card Issuance” card says resident validity is “linked to residence permit duration” and charges AED 100 per year. Citizens are different: 5 years under age 21 and 10 years from 21. So a two-year residence gives a two-year card, a three-year residence a three-year card, and a Golden residence a ten-year card (AED 1,100 for the ten years, as covered in our Golden Visa cost guide).

In most cases the two dates are the same, or within a few days of each other. When they drift apart, the reason is usually one of these:

• Separate processing in Dubai. A card renewed on its own, or a residence renewed while the Emirates ID card application stalled at biometrics, can leave the two dates out of step.
• A replacement card. ICP’s amendment card says “The new Identity Card is issued with the same validity period as the lost or damaged card”. A replacement does not reset the clock.
• A card application that was never finished. ICP cancels card applications when the procedures, such as fingerprints, are not completed in time. The residence can be renewed while the card still carries the old expiry.

Two expiry rules, two different fines

The Emirates ID card and the residence record are linked, but their late fees are not the same. This is where people get caught.

When the residence is renewed

A renewal is where Emirates ID and visa linking works best, as long as you let it. The aim is simple: one transaction, a new residence expiry, and a new card with the same expiry.

Other emirates (ICP files)

1. Check the window. ICP allows residents to renew the Emirates ID card when less than six months remain, and the residence renewal follows ICP’s residence service.
2. Complete the medical and insurance required for your category and emirate.
3. Apply once on the ICP smart services website or UAEICP app with UAE PASS, or through an ICP-accredited typing office. The unified service covers the residence and the card.
4. Check the pre-filled data, especially the passport number, before you pay.
5. Give biometrics if called (from age 15), then wait for the courier. The digital card appears in the UAEICP app once the card is issued.

Dubai (GDRFA files)

1. Renew the residence through Amer or the GDRFA app: AED 200 + 10 + 10 + 500 + 20 on GDRFA’s service card for two years, with a medical for those over 18 and 48 hours published time. GDRFA’s FAQ gives lower totals for renewals; we explain that conflict in our ICP vs GDRFA guide.
2. Make sure the Emirates ID lines are in the same transaction. Look for the ICP card lines on the payment screen: AED 100 per year and the smart services fee. If they are missing, ask before you pay.
3. Track the card with the application number on ICP’s ID card status page.

When the residence record is cancelled: what happens to the Emirates ID card

This is the question behind many searches for Emirates ID and visa linking, and the official answer is clear.

• u.ae: “Cancellation of the Emirates ID is linked to the cancellation of the residence visa. When a residence visa is cancelled, the Emirates ID is cancelled automatically as part of the process.”
• u.ae again: “The sponsor (employer or family sponsor) is required to submit the cancellation request. Once approved, the Emirates ID card is deactivated in the system.”
• ICP’s “Cancellation of Residency Permits” card: the service is the “Cancellation of the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID card”.

So you do not file a separate Emirates ID cancellation. The residence cancellation does it. The plastic Emirates ID card stays in your wallet and still looks valid, but the number now points at a cancelled residence record. Any bank, telecom or government check from that point returns a cancelled or inactive status.

What the cancellation costs and how long you have

ICP’s cancellation card: AED 50 application, AED 100 smart services, AED 100 for an exceptional cancellation (disputes or the guarantor’s death), and a AED 5,000 guarantee if a sponsor cancels their own residence without cancelling the family. Published time 2 days. GDRFA’s card for Dubai: AED 100 + AED 10 Knowledge + AED 10 Innovation Dirham, 48 hours, conditional on the MOHRE work permit cancellation for employees.

After cancellation you have a grace period to leave or regularise. ICP publishes 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue residence holders, widows, divorced women and post-study students; 90 days for skilled workers at levels 1 to 3 and property owners; 60 days for permits with a guarantor or host; and 30 days for all other categories. Standard grace in Dubai: 30 days after cancellation (some categories get 60, 90 or 180 days; your exact period is shown on your cancellation letter). Overstay fines start the day after your grace period ends, at AED 50 a day. The detail is in our grace period guide.

Practical points after a cancellation

• Close or update anything tied to the ID number before the cancellation if you can: bank contact details, UAE PASS access, salary transfer.
• Have the original card ready. GDRFA’s FAQ lists the sponsored person’s “original passport and original Emirates ID”, and the sponsor’s, among the documents for a cancellation inside the country. Keep a copy afterwards: it shows which number you held if a later case needs it.
• Family members are cancelled first. u.ae says only the sponsor can normally cancel, and dependants’ residences must be cancelled before the sponsor’s own. Each dependant’s card is cancelled with their residence.

New employer, new sponsor or status change

A UAE residence cannot be moved from one sponsor to another. The old residence is cancelled and a new one is issued. The Emirates ID follows each step.

1. Old residence cancelled. The old Emirates ID card is deactivated with it.
2. New entry permit or work permit under the new sponsor. If you are already in the UAE, a status change avoids leaving: ICP charges AED 500; GDRFA’s “Status Amendment” is AED 500 + 10 + 10 + a processing fee of AED 15 (individual) or AED 50 (establishment).
3. New residence issued with a new file number, the new sponsor and profession, and a new card.
4. Same Emirates ID number. The Emirates ID card is new; the 15-digit number is the one you already had.

Between steps 1 and 3 there is a gap in which you hold a card that has been cancelled and no new card yet. Plan around it: a bank or a landlord who checks your number in that gap will see a cancelled record. The new card’s data (sponsor, profession, expiry) reflects the new residence once it is issued.

New passport: Emirates ID and visa linking after a passport renewal

A passport renewal is the event that most often breaks Emirates ID and visa linking without anyone noticing. Your residence record still carries the old passport number. The Emirates ID card does not show a passport number, so it looks fine. Then the airline’s passport reader, which ICP says is how airlines verify residence, cannot find a residence against the new passport.

• The rule: u.ae says a card holder “must report any change in his/her personal details to ICP within one month from the date of change”.
• ICP files (other emirates): “Amendment of Residency Permit Data”, AED 150 for replacing the Emirates ID card “to update displayed information” plus AED 100 smart services, 2 days, UAE PASS login. The new card keeps the same validity.
• GDRFA files (Dubai): “Amendment of all types of residence permit data” at Amer or on the GDRFA app: AED 100 urgent service fee, AED 10 innovation fee and AED 100 printing fee if submitted through ZAJEL, with a passport valid for more than six months.
• Not the AED 50 data update. ICP’s data update covers phone number, email and address. It does not change passport details.

More than six months outside the UAE

Under Article 59 of the Executive Regulation (Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022), a residence becomes void after more than 180 consecutive days outside the UAE, subject to the exceptions in Article 60 and the Golden, Green and Blue categories listed by ICP. Because Emirates ID card validity is linked to the residence, a void residence record leaves you with a card that is no longer proof of residence, even if its printed date is years away.

The fix is a return permit, applied for from outside the UAE: GDRFA’s “Return Permit for Resident outside UAE More than 6 months” for Dubai files, and ICP’s permit for the other emirates (AED 150 fixed plus AED 100 per 30 days beyond 180). Travel: how airlines and border control read your residence

Before 2022, the check-in agent looked for a visa sticker. Now the check is electronic. ICP said in its April 2022 statement that it had worked with the aviation sector so that residents with valid residence permits are verified “through the use of the passport reader available at the platforms of companies operating in the air transport sector at airports”. The National reported at the time that airlines “can now verify the residency status through the passport number and Emirates ID”.

Three consequences follow for anyone relying on Emirates ID and visa linking when they fly:

• Travel on the passport that is on your residence record. If you renewed your passport and did not amend the residence, the new passport may return no residence at check-in. Carry the old passport as well if you still have it, and fix the record before you travel wherever possible.
• Carry the Emirates ID card. u.ae says residents must carry the Emirates ID at all times. The press has reported that the original card is expected on re-entry; the official pages we checked do not say what happens if you travel without it. • A cancelled residence shows as cancelled, whatever the Emirates ID card in your wallet says. If you leave on a cancelled residence, you re-enter on whatever visa or permit you then hold.

Smart gates and e-gates

At Dubai’s airports, GDRFA runs the smart gates. Its FAQ lists “UAE Residents” among those who can use them, alongside UAE and GCC nationals and some visa holders, and says “You need to be registered to use the Smart Gates”, adding that most people who recently passed through DXB passport control are likely to have been registered already. GDRFA’s smart gate inquiry page lets you check your eligibility by residence file number, UDB number, Emirates ID number or passport number, and says the gates are for “registered passengers with height of 1.2 meters and above”. Families with children and people with large strollers are directed to the counters.

If the inquiry says your data did not match, GDRFA’s own message tells you to try again with the correct information or call 800 5111. After a passport renewal, a mismatch here is often the first sign that the residence still carries the old passport number. For other emirates’ airports, the gates are run by ICP at those ports.

Proof of residence without a visa sticker: digital copy, printout and UAE PASS

Embassies, schools, banks, landlords and employers abroad still ask for “a copy of your visa”. Since there is no visa sticker, you have four ways to give them a proof of residence.

The printout fee is a known gap. ICP’s 2022 statement said residents could get their residency details “through a printed form”, but we did not find a current ICP service card for the printout. Gulf News reported a total of AED 101.40 in May 2022 (request AED 50, e-services AED 29.40, ICA AED 22). The National reported AED 250 and two working days in September 2024. We show both and go by the payment screen on the day. Gulf News also described the UAE PASS route in August 2025, including the QR verification that lets a government office confirm the document is genuine.

For Dubai files, GDRFA’s residency services page lists issuance, renewal, amendment and cancellation, but not a printout service. Gulf News reported in 2022 that the ICP report route lets you select Dubai GDRFA as the issuing department. If an embassy needs something more, such as a letter or an entry and exit record, GDRFA offers “Issuance of statements (entry and exit movement)” as a separate service.

Emirates ID and visa linking mismatches: symptoms, causes and fixes

Most linking problems are discovered by someone else: a bank, a telecom, a landlord, a school or a government portal. Here is how the symptoms we see map to causes and to the official fix. The symptoms come from our own casework; the fixes come from the ICP and GDRFA service cards.

How to confirm a mismatch yourself

1. Open the residence record in the UAEICP app (or the GDRFA app for a Dubai file) and compare the passport number with the passport in your hand.
2. Compare the name on the Emirates ID card, the residence page and the passport’s machine-readable zone, letter by letter.
3. Compare the dates. The card expiry should match the residence expiry, give or take a few days.
4. Check the file number. If you changed sponsor, the residence page should show the new file number and sponsor.
5. Write down the exact wording of the error from the bank or portal. “Not found” and “cancelled” point to different fixes.

Families and children

Every family member on a residence has their own residence record and their own Emirates ID card. For families, Emirates ID and visa linking runs through the sponsor.

• Dependants follow the sponsor’s record. A spouse’s or child’s renewal is checked against the sponsor’s residence. If the sponsor’s passport or residence data is out of date, the dependant’s application is the one that stops.
• Children get an Emirates ID too. u.ae says it is mandatory for all citizens and residents to apply. ICP requires fingerprints and signature from age 15; a younger child’s card is applied for with a photo and passport, and the application is made by the sponsor.
• Newborns. u.ae says residents have 120 days from birth to arrange the documents, “which includes birth certificates, passports, Emirates ID and visas”, and that a fee of AED 100 per day applies after that. ICP’s published fines schedule lists newborn registration at AED 50 a day, the same as any overstay; AED 100 is the legal ceiling on the daily rate in Cabinet Resolution 65/2022, Article 64. • Cancellation order. Dependants are cancelled before the sponsor, and each card is cancelled with its residence. ICP asks for a AED 5,000 guarantee if a sponsor cancels without cancelling the family.

Visitors and Golden residents

Visit visa holders

Visitors are not issued an Emirates ID. ICP’s new card service lists three categories only: UAE citizens, GCC citizens and residents. A visit visa is checked through your passport at the border, and there is nothing to link. If you are on a visit visa and your employer is applying for residence, your card application starts with the residence application, usually after a status change inside the UAE.

Golden, Green and other long residences

The link works the same way, with a longer clock: a ten-year Golden residence gives a ten-year card at AED 100 per year. Golden, Green and Blue residents also benefit from the 180-day grace period after cancellation and are listed by ICP among those not caught by the six-month absence rule. These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.

Case 1: New passport, airline cannot see the residence

A Sharjah-resident engineer renewed his passport at his consulate and flew home on it three months later. At check-in for the return flight, the airline’s system showed no UAE residence against the new passport. He held a valid Emirates ID card, but the residence record still carried the old passport number. Because he had kept the old passport, the airline could find the residence against the old number, and he boarded. Back in the UAE he filed ICP’s “Amendment of Residency Permit Data” online: AED 150 + AED 100, published 2 days. The replacement card came with the same expiry date. The fix took minutes; the airport scare was avoidable by filing within the one-month window.

Case 2: Dubai renewal, card still shows the old expiry

A Dubai family renewed the father’s residence through a typing office. The residence was renewed for two years, but two months later his card still showed the old expiry and the card’s grace period was running out. The payment receipt showed only GDRFA’s residence lines; the ICP card lines had not been paid, so no card application existed. We filed the card renewal with ICP (AED 100 per year for two years + AED 100 smart services) before the card’s 30 days of grace ended, so no AED 20 daily fee was added. Lesson: in Dubai, look for the card lines on the receipt.

Case 3: Changing employer, the bank freezes the account

An employee in Dubai resigned, and her old employer cancelled her residence on her last day. Her new employer’s entry permit and status change took three weeks. In that gap, her bank’s periodic check returned “ID cancelled” and restricted the account. Nothing was wrong: u.ae says the card is cancelled with the residence. Once the new residence was issued (status change AED 500 + 10 + 10 + processing on GDRFA’s card) and the new card arrived with the same ID number, the bank updated her profile. Lesson: tell your bank before the old residence is cancelled, and ask what they need.

Case 4: The wife’s renewal stops at the sponsor

A husband sponsoring his wife and two children in Ajman tried to renew the family’s residences. The wife’s application stopped. The cause was his own record: he had renewed his passport a year earlier and never amended his residence. We filed his ICP amendment first (AED 150 + AED 100), waited for approval, then renewed the family. The dependants’ cards were issued with the new expiry. Lesson: fix the sponsor’s record before lodging anything for the family.

Case 5: A proof of residence for an embassy

A Dubai resident needed “a copy of the residence visa” for a Schengen visa application. She had no visa sticker, only the Emirates ID card. She downloaded the residence page from the UAEICP app as a PDF, and when the visa centre asked for a stamped document, ordered the “Residence Details – Print” report on ICP’s website, choosing Dubai GDRFA as the issuing department and paying the fee shown on the screen. Lesson: try the no-fee digital page first, and allow time for the printout if paper is insisted on.

What we will and will not do

• We will check your Emirates ID card, residence record and passport against each other before you pay for anything, and tell you if you can fix it yourself on the app.
• We will give you the government fee lines from the current ICP or GDRFA card and our own fee in writing.
• We will file at the right authority: GDRFA for Dubai residence files, ICP for the other emirates and for the card.
• We will not promise a delivery date for a card. ICP publishes 5 days plus courier, and biometrics or printing can add time.
• We will not apply for a new card to hide a data problem, or submit anything with data we know is wrong.
• We will not claim to influence an approval. The authority decides; we make sure the application is complete and correct.
