Key takeaways

  • Most visit visas can be extended without leaving the UAE, but only while the visa is still valid. Apply a few working days before the last day of your stay, not on it.
  • Who decides depends on where the visa was issued. A Dubai visa is extended through GDRFA Dubai. A visa issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah is extended through ICP.
  • The limits are set by visa type. Tourism visas: one or more extensions, up to 120 days in total. Relative or friend, job-seeker and business-exploration visits: up to 180 days in total. GCC resident visas: once only. Some visas, such as the 60-day visa on arrival for eligible Indian nationals, cannot be extended at all.
  • Official fees, checked 27 October 2026: GDRFA lists AED 600 plus 5% VAT, and AED 520 more when the person is inside the UAE, which comes to AED 1,150. ICP lists AED 100 application plus AED 500 extension, so AED 600. Channel and agency charges come on top.
  • There is no grace period on a visit visa. No official card publishes one. The fine is AED 50 for every day after the permitted stay ends.
  • If you are staying for work or family, an extension may be the wrong tool. A change of status to a residence visa inside the UAE is a separate application with its own fee.

In short: As of October 2026, you can extend most UAE visit visas from inside the country before they expire. Dubai-issued visas are extended through GDRFA Dubai (AED 600 plus VAT, plus AED 520 in-country charges) and visas from other emirates through ICP (AED 100 plus AED 500). Tourism visas stop at 120 days in total and relative, friend and job-seeker visits at 180 days. Once the visa expires, AED 50 a day applies.

This guide answers one question: can your visit visa be extended inside the UAE, and how? It gives a decision table by visa type, the official fees from the GDRFA and ICP service cards, the steps for each channel, the documents, the deadline, worked cost comparisons between extending and leaving to re-enter, the most common reasons an extension cannot be filed, and what to do if you have already overstayed.

Every rule and fee below was checked on 27 October 2026 against the GDRFA Dubai visa extension service cards, the ICP Visa Extension service card and the UAE Government portal u.ae. Where the official sources are silent or disagree, we say so. For the full list of UAE visa categories, see our UAE visa types guide; if your visa has already expired, read what happens when a UAE visa expires.

Can I extend my visit visa without leaving the UAE?

Usually yes. GDRFA Dubai runs eleven separate extension services for different kinds of entry visa, and ICP runs one Visa Extension service with rules by category. Both are filed while the visitor is in the country. What decides your answer is three things: the type of visa, the emirate that issued it, and how many days you have already used against the total cap.

Two rules apply to almost every case:

  • Each extension is normally for the same period as the original visa. The GDRFA cards describe extending the visa “for the same period” or “for the same granted period”, one or more times, up to a total cap.
  • The extension is decided by the authority. Both GDRFA and ICP word every limit as an extension that “may” be granted by the issuing authority. Meeting the conditions makes you eligible; it does not guarantee approval.

Which visit visas can be extended? The decision table

Find your visa in the first column. The total stay includes the original visa, so a 60-day tourist visa with a 120-day cap leaves room for one 60-day extension.

Sources: GDRFA Dubai visa extension service cards (tourist, relative or friend, job opportunities, visitor upon arrival, Indians residing in the US, UK or EU, GCC residents), GDRFA multi-entry tourist visa (5 years) card, ICP Visa Extension service card, u.ae tourist visa and jobseeker visit visa pages, all checked 27 October 2026. The AED 1,150 and AED 282.50 totals are our arithmetic from the card lines; GDRFA says the total “may vary” with the person’s circumstances.

Where official sources do not match

An older GDRFA FAQ answer still describes a visit visa that “could be extended twice” (30 days, then 20 days) for AED 810 per extension plus Amer fees. It does not match the current GDRFA service cards, which we follow above. Older u.ae text also described the 30-day visa on arrival as carrying a 10-day window for extension; the current u.ae entry page (updated 13 July 2026) no longer gives durations and sends readers to check eligibility elsewhere. If your case depends on either point, confirm it with GDRFA or ICP for your passport before you rely on it.

GDRFA or ICP: which authority extends your visa?

The authority that issued the visa extends it. Look at the visa document: a Dubai visa carries a GDRFA Dubai file, and a visa from any other emirate carries an ICP file. Where you are staying does not matter. A visitor on an Abu Dhabi-issued tourist visa who is staying in Dubai still extends through ICP.

How to extend a visit visa: step by step for each channel

1. GDRFA website or smart app (Dubai visas)

  1. The person who sponsored the visa logs in to GDRFA smart services with UAE PASS or a username. For a relative or friend visit, that is the UAE resident host. A self-sponsored visitor (job-seeker, 5-year tourist) uses their own account.
  2. Search for the extension service that matches the visa: “Extending a tourist visa”, “Extend friend or relative’s visit visa”, “Extending Visit Visa to Explore Job opportunities”, and so on.
  3. Fill in the application, upload the passport copy, and pay the fee.
  4. Track the application; the published completion time is 48 hours. Check the new expiry date on the approval, not the date you expected.

2. Amer centre (Dubai visas)

  1. Take the passport and visa details to an Amer centre and take a queue ticket.
  2. Submit the application and documents to the customer service employee and pay the fee plus the centre’s own service charge.
  3. Keep the receipt and application number until the approval arrives.

3. ICP Smart Services or the UAEICP app (other emirates)

  1. Log in with UAE PASS on smartservices.icp.gov.ae or the UAEICP app.
  2. Open Visa Extension, choose the category, and review the pre-filled data.
  3. Attach documents only if the system cannot retrieve them, then pay. ICP sends an electronic notification when the extension is issued; the published time is 2 days.
  4. If you cannot use UAE PASS, a Customer Happiness Centre or an ICP-registered typing centre can submit it for you.

4. The tourism office, airline or hotel that issued a tourist visa

Tourist visas are issued through travel agents, hotels and UAE airlines, and GDRFA states that only accredited tourism offices in the emirate can issue this kind of visa. In practice, the office that issued your tourist visa files the extension, and it adds its own charge to the government fee. Airlines set their own conditions for the visas they arrange; check with the airline first. Ask for the government fee and the service charge as separate lines.

What documents do you need?

  • Passport copy. GDRFA lists only this. Make sure the passport has enough validity: the GDRFA tourist visa card asks for a passport valid at least six months.
  • Personal photo (ICP).
  • The same documents used when the visa was issued (ICP): for a relative or friend visit, the host’s residence details and proof of relationship; for a job-seeker visa, the attested qualification; for a medical visa, the hospital letter.
  • Health insurance valid in the UAE. Tourist and 5-year visas are issued against UAE-valid insurance. We recommend extending the policy to cover the new dates before you apply, so the file is consistent.
  • The visa itself and the entry stamp details, so the extension is filed against the right permit.

Deadline: is there a grace period on a visit visa?

No. Do not plan around a grace period. The grace periods that residents get after a residence visa is cancelled do not apply to visit visas. No GDRFA or ICP card published today gives visitors any days after the permitted stay ends. ICP’s Visa Extension card lists the fine for “expiry of the permitted stay period for the visa holder, or expiration of the entry visa” at AED 50 per day, and u.ae says visit, tourist and residence overstay fines are standardised at AED 50 per day.

So treat the last valid day on your visa as your real deadline, and file the extension early enough for the published processing time (48 hours at GDRFA, 2 days at ICP) to finish before it. The extension services are for a stay that is still running. Once your permitted stay has ended, the daily fine starts the next day and an extension is no longer the route.

Two different clocks

A visit visa has two clocks. The first is the window to enter: a visit visa must be used to enter within 60 days of issue (Executive Regulation, Article 13), and ICP can extend that entry window once, before arrival, for AED 50. The second is the permitted stay after entry, which is what this guide is about. Extending one does not extend the other.

Extend, or leave and come back? Worked cost comparisons

These are illustrations with round figures, not real clients. Government fees come from the cards checked on 27 October 2026; agency and travel costs are placeholders you should replace with your own quotes.

CaseExtend inside the UAELeave and re-enter on a new visaWhat decides it
1. Dubai 30-day tourist visa, wants 30 more daysGDRFA AED 600 + AED 30 VAT + AED 520 = AED 1,150, plus the tourism office charge. Stay is 60 of the 120-day capNew 30-day tourist visa applied from outside: AED 200 + AED 10 VAT = AED 210, plus agency charge, plus the trip out and back (say AED 600) = about AED 810 plus agency chargeThe exit route can cost less in fees but needs the new visa approved before you travel, a day or more away, and a new entry decision at the border
2. Mother on a 90-day relative visit visa from Dubai, son is a residentOne 90-day extension takes her to the 180-day cap: AED 1,150 filed by the sonNew 90-day relative visa from outside: AED 400 + VAT + AED 90 insurance + AED 1,000 refundable deposit and its charges, plus travelIf she will stay long term, a parent residence visa with a change of status may make more sense than either
3. Sharjah-issued 60-day tourist visa, visitor staying in DubaiICP AED 100 + AED 500 = AED 600, one 60-day extension (120-day cap)New tourist visa from outside plus travelThe issuing emirate decides the authority: this is an ICP extension even though the visitor is in Dubai
4. Visit visa expired 6 days agoNot available: the stay has already endedSettle 6 x AED 50 = AED 300 and leave, or change status if a sponsor is readyEvery further day adds AED 50

Sources: GDRFA Dubai extension cards; GDRFA single-entry tourist visa card (30-day AED 200, 60-day AED 300, plus 5% VAT; in-country charges only if inside); GDRFA relative or friend visit visa card (90-day AED 400 plus VAT, insurance AED 90, deposit AED 1,000 plus AED 20 and AED 40 charges); ICP Visa Extension card; u.ae AED 50 per day. Travel cost is an assumption.

Leaving and re-entering is a legitimate choice, but it is not automatic: you need a new visa approved before you fly back, and entry is always the border officer’s decision. If your plan is to stay and work or live in the UAE, compare both against a change of status with our status change vs exit calculator.

Common reasons an extension cannot be filed or is refused

These come from the conditions printed on the GDRFA and ICP cards. The authority can also refuse for reasons it does not publish.

  • The visa has already expired. The stay has ended and the fine is running.
  • The total cap is reached. 120 days for tourism, 180 days for relative, friend, job-seeker, business-exploration, medical and study visits, once only for GCC resident visas and the 14-day visa on arrival.
  • The visa type is not extendable. For example the 60-day visa on arrival for eligible Indian nationals, or border-area and boat permits.
  • Wrong channel or wrong authority. A Dubai tourist visa filed somewhere other than the accredited tourism office, or an ICP-issued visa filed with GDRFA.
  • Passport validity too short for the issuing conditions, or a new passport not yet linked to the visa file.
  • The sponsor no longer qualifies. For a relative or friend visit, the host’s own residence has expired or been cancelled.
  • Missing or mismatched documents, such as insurance that ends before the new dates.
  • An open violation or other restriction on the file. Check it before you apply; our guide to UAE ban types explains what can block a file.

Already overstayed, or close to it?

If the visit visa has expired and you are still in the UAE, AED 50 a day runs from the day after expiry, and you have two routes: settle the fine and leave, or change status inside the country if a sponsor is ready and the route is open for your case. Work out the amount with our overstay fine calculator, read how the daily fine is counted in our overstay fine guide, and see the payment channels on our overstay fine payment page.

Leaving on an outpass (departure permit) without settling the fine has consequences for a later return. We explain those in left the UAE on an outpass without paying the fine.

Overstayed, refused, or not sure your visa can be extended? Every case starts with a file check: AED 100 (5% VAT included), fully credited to your fee if you go ahead. It tells us your exact route, fines and timeline before you commit. We share our bank details here on WhatsApp; send the transfer receipt and we start your check.

Changing from a visit visa to a residence visa inside the UAE

An extension only keeps you here as a visitor. If you have a job offer or a family sponsor, the usual route is a change of status: the sponsor obtains a new entry permit (employment or family), and the visitor’s status is amended inside the country instead of exiting and re-entering. In Dubai the service is GDRFA’s Status Amendment, published at AED 500 plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham, with a 48-hour completion time. The new entry permit carries its own fees, including an in-country charge.

The visit visa’s own expiry is the deadline for the whole sequence, so start early and, if needed, extend the visit visa to give the new permit time to come through. Our visa status change fees guide sets out the GDRFA and ICP costs and the timing risks. For the services themselves, see our employment visa service, family and residence visa service and parents visa service.

Common mistakes with visit visa extensions

  • Waiting for a grace period that does not exist. The fine starts the day after the stay ends.
  • Applying on the last day. Processing is 48 hours at GDRFA and 2 days at ICP.
  • Applying to the wrong authority. The issuing emirate decides, not where you are staying.
  • Counting only the extension, not the cap. The original visa days count towards the 120 or 180-day total.
  • Assuming every visa on arrival can be extended. The 60-day visa on arrival for eligible Indian nationals cannot, and other passports need checking.
  • Comparing only government fees. Agency, typing centre and travel costs change the answer between extending and leaving.
  • Using an extension when you need a residence. If you are staying for a job or family, start the status change instead.

How MIRDXB PRO helps

We check which extension route applies to your visa, prepare the application with the right documents, and submit it through GDRFA, ICP or an Amer or typing centre. We do the same for changes of status, overstay settlements and departure planning. We have no published fixed fee for visit visa extensions, so our fee is quoted on WhatsApp before you pay. Routine extensions start with a quote; problem cases (overstay, refusal, file restrictions) start with the AED 100 file check, credited to your fee.

What we are not. MIRDXB PRO is a private PRO and visa services company. We are not GDRFA, ICP or any government body, and we are not an authorised partner of either. Approval of every extension is the authority’s decision, and we cannot promise an outcome.

Send us the visa type, the emirate that issued it, your expiry date, nationality and whether a UAE resident sponsored the visit. We tell you the route, the official fees and our fixed fee before anything is filed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my visit visa inside the UAE?

Usually yes, while the visa is still valid. GDRFA Dubai extends visas issued in Dubai and ICP extends visas issued in the other six emirates. Tourism visas can reach 120 days in total, relative, friend and job-seeker visits 180 days, and GCC resident visas can be extended once.

How much does a visit visa extension cost in Dubai?

The GDRFA cards list AED 600 plus 5% VAT, and when the person is inside the UAE a further AED 500 inside-country fee and AED 20 in Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams. That comes to AED 1,150 before any agency or Amer centre charge. GDRFA notes the total may vary with the case.

How much does ICP charge to extend a visit visa?

The ICP Visa Extension card lists an application fee of AED 100 and an extension fee of AED 500, so AED 600, with a published time of 2 days. The 14-day visa on arrival for eligible Indian nationals has its own extension fee of AED 250.

How many times can a tourist visa be extended?

GDRFA and ICP both say a tourism visa may be extended one or more times, as long as the total stay does not exceed 120 days. Each extension is normally for the same period as the original visa. The authority decides each request.

Is there a grace period after a visit visa expires?

No. No GDRFA or ICP card published today gives visitors a grace period. The ICP card charges AED 50 for each day after the permitted stay ends, and u.ae says visit and tourist overstay fines are AED 50 a day. Treat the last valid day as your deadline.

Can I extend a visit visa after it has expired?

Do not plan on it. The extension services are for a stay that is still running, and the daily fine starts the day after expiry. Once a visit visa has expired, the routes are to settle the fine and leave, or to change status inside the UAE if a sponsor is ready.

Can a visa on arrival be extended in the UAE?

It depends on the visa. The 14-day visa on arrival for Indian nationals holding a US visa or green card, or a UK or EU residence visa, can be extended once for 14 days. The 60-day version cannot be extended. For other passports, confirm with GDRFA or ICP before your last day.

Can a GCC resident extend the UAE eVisa?

Yes, once. u.ae says the GCC resident entry permit allows 30 days from entry and is extendable once for 30 days, and the GDRFA card allows one extension for the same duration. The GDRFA extension fee is AED 600 plus VAT, plus in-country charges.

Who applies for the extension of a relative or friend visit visa?

The UAE resident or citizen who sponsored the visit applies, through GDRFA smart services, the ICP channels or an Amer or typing centre. The total stay on this visa can reach 180 days. The host needs a valid residence when filing.

Is it cheaper to extend or to exit and re-enter?

In government fees, a new 30-day Dubai tourist visa applied from outside (AED 200 plus VAT) costs less than a GDRFA extension (AED 1,150). Once you add agency charges, travel and the risk of a new entry decision, the gap narrows. Compare the full cost for your case.

Can I change from a visit visa to a residence visa without leaving?

Often yes, through a change of status. The sponsor obtains a new employment or family entry permit and the status is amended inside the UAE. In Dubai, GDRFA lists the Status Amendment at AED 500 plus AED 20 in dirham charges. The visit visa expiry is the deadline.

Can MIRDXB PRO guarantee my extension is approved?

No. We prepare and submit the application through the official channels, but every extension is decided by GDRFA or ICP. We are a private PRO and visa services company, not a government body and not an authorised partner. Our fee is quoted on WhatsApp before you pay.

Please note. This guide summarises the visit visa extension rules and fees published on the GDRFA Dubai and ICP service cards and on u.ae, checked 27 October 2026. The worked examples are illustrations, not real cases, and travel and agency costs in them are assumptions. Fees, limits and eligibility change, and the authority decides every extension, so confirm the current card for your visa type before you rely on a figure. This page is general information, not legal advice. MIRDXB PRO is a private PRO and visa services company in Al Barsha 1, Dubai. It is not GDRFA, ICP or any government body and is not an authorised partner of either; it prepares applications and submits them through the official channels on its clients’ behalf, and every decision rests with the authority.
