A travel ban in Dubai is an order that stops a named person from leaving the UAE until a court case, a debt, a criminal matter or a custody question is resolved; it is issued by Dubai Courts, Dubai Public Prosecution or a judicial committee such as the Rental Dispute Centre, and circulated by Dubai Police to every exit point. You check it at no cost in the Dubai Police app or website under Circulars and Travel Bans, by calling 901 or at a police station. It is lifted by the body that ordered it, most often after payment, a guarantee or a deposit, and never by the airport.
This guide was rewritten on 24 September 2026 from the UAE Government portal (u.ae), Dubai Police, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, the Ministry of Justice and the RAK Government portal, with legal commentary and reputable UAE newspapers used only as labelled secondary sources. It explains how to check travel ban records in each emirate, how to read the travel ban status and how each kind of ban is lifted.

Travel ban check and removal in Dubai: our service and fee

What it costs
The Dubai Police check is published as having no charge on u.ae, and the GDRFA unified number and fines enquiries have no fee. We found no published fee for Estafser or the Ministry of Justice case list. Court fees, execution fees and the amount of any debt are set by the court and are not ours to quote. People pay to “remove a ban” without knowing which one they have, and the remedy for one does nothing for another. A labour ban stops you taking a new job; it does not stop you flying. A travel ban stops you leaving. An immigration ban stops you coming back. The first thing our travel ban check in Dubai establishes is which of these, if any, is on your record. Causes we look for that people forget
- A police case filed against you, including one filed by an employer.
- Business liabilities, where you are a signatory or guarantor for a company.
- Family cases, such as maintenance orders.
- Unpaid rent or a landlord case.
Employer-raised disputes are often resolved through MOHRE mediation before they reach the ban stage, which is one reason to deal with a labour complaint early rather than walk away from it.

Timelines vary enormously with the cause. A settled debt with clean paperwork can clear quickly; a contested court matter does not. Nobody can give you a reliable timeline before the cause and the case number are known. Where the answer is that you must settle a debt, we will say so rather than sell you a process that cannot work.
What a travel ban is, and what it is not
People use “travel ban” for anything that might stop them at an airport. The official tools each answer a narrow question about one authority’s records, so decide which question you are asking first.
A travel ban in Dubai, in the strict sense, is an order preventing departure from the UAE. It is made in a civil, commercial, criminal or family matter, it names a person, and it lasts until the body that made it lifts it. It does not cancel your residence or stop you entering the UAE; it keeps a person within reach of a court or creditor while a matter is resolved.

The last row needs a short note. An overstay fine is an immigration debt, not a court order, and it is handled by GDRFA or ICP. The UAE is a federation. Entry, residence and identity are federal matters, held by ICP, with GDRFA Dubai running them for Dubai. Courts are different: u.ae states that Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah keep their own independent judicial departments, while Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain follow the federal judicial system. A case in Dubai lives in Dubai’s courts; a case in Sharjah lives in the federal courts. Each system publishes a check for its own records, and none of them can honestly answer for the others.
The kinds of travel ban in Dubai, and where each comes from
A travel ban in Dubai comes from one of four places. Knowing which one applies tells you where to check, who can lift it and whether you need a lawyer, a payment or both.
1. Civil and commercial cases: the financial travel ban
This is the kind most residents mean. A creditor, typically a bank, a finance company, a landlord outside the rental system or a business partner, asks the court to stop the debtor from leaving before or during a claim. The Civil Procedure Code is Federal Decree-Law No. 42 of 2022, in force since 2 January 2023 according to the UAE legislation portal. The travel ban provisions sit in its precautionary and enforcement chapters.
We were not able to open the full official text of those chapters on the day of writing, so the detail below is taken from published legal commentary (Mondaq, July 2026, and other UAE law firm summaries) and labelled as such. As summarised there, Article 324 allows a creditor to ask the judge for a travel ban even before filing the main case, where there are serious reasons to fear the debtor will leave, the debt is not less than AED 10,000, and the debt is due and known. The judge may order the passport to be deposited with the court and the ban to be circulated at the exit points, which is how a travel ban in Dubai reaches the airport. The AED 10,000 threshold is reported not to apply to maintenance, wages and some other obligations.
Article 325, as summarised, lists the ways to lift a travel ban of this kind: the reasons for it cease to exist; the creditor consents in writing; the debtor gives a bank guarantee or a surety the judge accepts; the debtor deposits the amount with the court; the creditor does not file the main case within 8 days of the order, or does not open enforcement within 30 days of a final judgment; or three years pass without any execution step. These grounds are the practical map for lifting a financial ban, and they come up again in the lifting section below.
Whether a particular ban was properly ordered, whether a debt is really due, and whether a guarantee is acceptable are decided by the judge on the file. Commentary tells you the framework, not the outcome of your case. If you intend to challenge rather than lift a travel ban by paying or securing it, you need a lawyer licensed to appear before the court that made it.
2. Bounced cheques and security cheques
Cheques are the classic source of a surprise travel ban in Dubai, and the law changed in 2022. Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2020 amended the cheque provisions of the Commercial Transactions Law with effect from 2 January 2022. As reported by Gulf News and Khaleej Times at the time, a cheque returned for insufficient funds is now an executive document that the holder can take straight to the execution judge, instead of a criminal complaint.
Two consequences follow. First, a bounced cheque is now mainly a civil enforcement matter, and the execution judge’s powers include a travel ban. Second, some cheque conduct is still criminal: according to the Central Bank guidance reported in December 2021, that includes withdrawing the balance after issuing the cheque, closing the account, instructing the bank not to pay without a lawful reason, deliberately signing a cheque so it cannot be cashed, and forgery. In those cases the ban can come from the criminal side instead.
Security cheques deserve their own warning: undated cheques given for a lease, a car or a loan are often forgotten and presented years later. Ask for each one back in writing when the arrangement ends.
3. Criminal cases: the police and Public Prosecution travel ban
In a criminal matter, the Public Prosecution can order a travel ban while it investigates, and the criminal court can keep it in place during trial or until a fine or compensation is paid. The Criminal Procedure Law is Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2022. Commentary cites its Article 99 for the prosecution’s power; we could not open that article on the official portal, so we label it as commentary.
What matters practically is the payment route. In August 2023, The National reported that Dubai Public Prosecution had launched a Smart Payment of Fines service: the person receives an SMS with the verdict details, the fine and a payment link, pays after authenticating with their digital identity, and the prosecution’s system, linked to Dubai Police, revokes the related arrest warrant and lifts the travel ban automatically. It covers fines in criminal judgments issued in person or in absentia.
4. Rental disputes: a travel ban in Dubai for unpaid rent
Rent disputes in Dubai go to the Rental Dispute Settlement Centre, which is part of the Dubai Land Department. Its orders and judgments, including a travel ban in an enforcement file, are circulated in the same way. In January 2026, Gulf News and Khaleej Times reported that Dubai Police had upgraded its Circulars and Travel Bans service so that a person can log in with UAE PASS, see the circular and the issuing authority, pay the outstanding amount online and have the ban lifted automatically within seconds, with the travel ban status updated on the same screen. At launch this applied to bans issued by the Rental Dispute Settlement Centre, with Dubai Courts and the Public Prosecution to follow.
5. Family cases and children
In custody matters, a parent can ask the personal status court to prevent a child from travelling, and the court can allow travel for a stated period. In June 2024, Gulf News reported that Dubai Courts had automated this: once the court grants permission, the child’s ban is lifted and then reinstated automatically when the child returns. The federal Personal Status Law was replaced by Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 (in force from April 2025, as reported); family travel disputes are a matter for a family lawyer, and this guide does not go further than the checking step.
Which emirate’s system holds your record
This is the question that explains most surprises at the airport. A Dubai resident can have a case in Sharjah because a car loan was signed there, or in Abu Dhabi because a former employer’s office was there. The table below follows u.ae’s description of the judicial system.

Check every emirate where you have a footprint, not only the one you live in. In practice that means where you lived (tenancy and utilities), where you worked (including a previous employer based in another emirate), where you borrowed (a bank’s branch or the emirate named in the contract), where you ran or part-owned a business, and where you signed a lease, a guarantee or a cheque.
How to check travel ban records: the numbers and logins you need
When people ask how to check travel ban records and get nowhere, the problem is usually identifiers, not the portal. Collect these first and keep them in one note.

How to check travel ban records in Dubai: the Dubai Police service
For a travel ban in Dubai, the first stop is Dubai Police and its Circulars and Travel Bans service. u.ae describes the service in one sentence: Dubai Police has an online, no-charge service that enables residents in the UAE to check whether they have a travel ban due to financial cases in the emirate of Dubai only. It uses your Emirates ID number, it runs on the Dubai Police website and app, and enquiries go to 901.
Khaleej Times reported in December 2025 that Dubai Police had launched an enhanced Circulars and Travel Bans enquiry, which lets users check their criminal and financial status across most types of report, with details of the authority to contact, without visiting a police station, a judicial authority or a rent dispute office. Gulf News reported in January 2026 that the service now uses UAE PASS login, shows the circular and the issuing authority, lets you pay eligible amounts online and is usable from inside and outside the UAE.
u.ae still describes a financial-cases-only check by Emirates ID number. Dubai Police’s own announcements, as reported by Khaleej Times and Gulf News, describe a wider service with criminal and rental circulars and UAE PASS login. We could not read the Dubai Police service page as text, so we cannot quote its current card. Use the app with UAE PASS if you have it; a screen asking only for your Emirates ID number is the older route u.ae describes.
How to check travel ban status step by step in the Dubai Police app
- Install the official Dubai Police app from the App Store or Google Play, or open the Dubai Police website.
- Find Circulars and Travel Bans in the services list (older versions labelled a similar service under criminal status of financial cases).
- Sign in with UAE PASS, or enter your Emirates ID number and the one-time password sent to your registered mobile, depending on the version you see.
- Read the result. If there is a circular, note the issuing authority, the case or reference number, the date and any amount shown.
- Screenshot the travel ban status with the date and time showing.
- If the service offers online payment for your circular, it will say so; a rental circular paid this way is reported to lift automatically. For other circulars, the screen tells you which authority to contact.
What the travel ban status from Dubai Police can and cannot tell you
A clear travel ban status means Dubai Police has no circular against your identity in the categories the service covers, at that moment. It is a real and useful piece of information. It does not cover the other six emirates, it does not cover immigration or labour records, and it cannot tell you about a case that has been filed but has not yet produced a ban. A creditor can file tomorrow.
A travel ban status showing a circular is a starting point, not a verdict. It tells you that a record exists and who issued it. It does not decide whether the debt is correct, whether the case can be defended or what the court will accept to lift it. Those questions go to the issuing authority and, where there is a dispute, to a lawyer.
By phone or in person
If you cannot use the app, call Dubai Police on 901 (the non-emergency line given on u.ae) or visit a police station or smart police station with your Emirates ID and passport. u.ae’s own advice, where you are still unsure after checking online, is to seek a lawyer’s help or contact the nearest immigration or police office before you travel.
Dubai Courts: checking the case behind the ban
If the circular comes from a civil, commercial or execution case, the court file is where the detail sits: the claim, the amount, the judgment, the execution file and any order for a travel ban in Dubai. Dubai Courts runs its own electronic services, and a party or their licensed lawyer can follow a case and file requests there. The Dubai Courts website did not load for us on the day of writing, so we do not describe its current service cards or fees.
A party normally follows a Dubai case through a lawyer, the Dubai Courts smart services or an Al Adheed centre. The case number on any court notice is the key; if you have none and the Dubai Police service shows a circular from Dubai Courts, a lawyer can find and read the file.
Do not assume a case ended because you paid someone. Settlements with a bank or a collection agency are commercial agreements; the court order stays until the court lifts it, which usually needs the creditor’s written consent or proof of payment filed in the case. After settling, ask the creditor for a written release and confirm that it has been filed.
Dubai Public Prosecution: criminal cases and unpaid fines
A criminal complaint in Dubai goes to the police and then to Dubai Public Prosecution, which decides whether to prosecute. A travel ban can be ordered at the investigation stage, and a criminal judgment with a fine can carry a ban until the fine is paid. The practical signals are an SMS from the prosecution, a summons, or a circular on the Dubai Police service naming the Public Prosecution as the issuer.
For fines, the Smart Payment of Fines service reported by The National in August 2023 is the fastest route: pay through the SMS link after authenticating, and the related arrest warrant and travel ban are lifted automatically because the prosecution’s system is connected to Dubai Police. Kiosks and the prosecution’s website were reported as alternative payment channels. For anything that is not a simple fine, such as a pending investigation, a judgment in absentia you want to object to, or a complaint you dispute, speak to a criminal lawyer before you take any step.
Rental Dispute Centre: how to lift a travel ban for rent
If the circular names the Rental Dispute Settlement Centre, the claim is a rent matter, usually unpaid rent or charges after a tenancy ended. As reported in January 2026, this is the category where Dubai Police’s upgraded service allows you to pay the outstanding amount online and have the ban lifted automatically. It is the simplest way to lift a travel ban of this kind. Before paying, check that the amount matches what you actually owe; if you dispute it, the route is the Rental Dispute Centre itself, usually with a lawyer or a representative, not the payment button.
How to check travel ban records in the other emirates
Abu Dhabi: Estafser and case inquiry
u.ae describes Estafser as the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department’s online service that lets residents of Abu Dhabi check whether they are requested by the Public Prosecution for any claims against them, using the unified number. Gulf News reported in May 2025 that ADJD answered 97 per cent of Estafser enquiries within one working day, so expect a reply rather than an instant screen.
- Get your unified number (UID) from your residence visa, e-visa or the GDRFA Unified Number Inquiry.
- Open the ADJD e-services site or app and choose Estafser.
- Enter the unified number and your contact details, and submit.
- Keep the reference and the reply. If a case is shown, ADJD’s case inquiry (sign-in required) and its call centre, 600 599 799, are the next steps.
Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah: the Ministry of Justice
These four emirates follow the federal judicial system, so their civil and criminal cases sit with the federal courts and the Federal Public Prosecution under the Ministry of Justice. The MOJ portal uses UAE PASS, and its case management area lists the cases linked to your identity. Gulf News (2022) and Khaleej Times (2024) described a Cancellation Request of Travel Ban Order e-service reached through My Cases, with fees depending on the case and processing within five working days. When we checked on 24 September 2026, that service card’s address on moj.gov.ae returned “page not found”, so we cannot confirm its current form.
In August 2024, Gulf News reported a Ministry of Justice announcement under the Zero Government Bureaucracy programme: travel bans in the federal system are now lifted automatically once the person becomes eligible, with the steps reduced from nine to none. Still check the result yourself after paying or settling. MOJ’s number is 800 333333.
Ras Al Khaimah
RAK keeps its own courts and public prosecution. The RAK Government portal lists Public Prosecution services including Case Inquiry – Public Prosecution and Travel Ban Cancellation. The portal pages did not render their full service cards for us, so we do not state fees or inputs. If you lived, worked or borrowed in RAK, include it when you work out how to check travel ban records for yourself, and use the portal or visit the Public Prosecution.
Several private websites offer to report your travel ban status across the UAE by passport number for a fee. None of the official sources we used mentions any such UAE-wide public database, and the official checks have no fee or run through your own UAE PASS. Do not give your passport, Emirates ID and UAE PASS details to a site that is not a government or licensed law firm channel.
Reading your travel ban status
The labels on screen vary between the app, the website and the counter, and none of the authorities publishes a glossary. The table gives the usual meaning of each kind of result and the sensible next step. Where it is our practical reading rather than a published rule, the table says so.

Two readings of a travel ban status mislead people often. The first is treating a clear Dubai Police result as a clearance for the whole UAE. The second is treating a paid debt as a lifted ban. Payment is the reason for lifting; the lifting itself is a separate record that someone has to update, even where the systems now do it automatically. Check again after you pay.
How to lift a travel ban: the routes
How you lift a travel ban in Dubai depends on what it came from. There is no general application that removes every ban, and nobody outside the court or prosecution can make one disappear. The routes below are the ones that the official announcements and the legal commentary describe.

Paying: the usual way to lift a travel ban
For most financial bans, paying is the route that ends the matter. Before you pay, confirm three things in writing: the exact amount the creditor accepts, including any fees and interest the court has awarded; that the creditor will file its consent or a settlement in the case; and who will ask the court to lift a travel ban once paid. Pay by a traceable method. A cash payment to a collection agent with no receipt tied to the case number is the weakest evidence you can have.
Securing the debt to lift a travel ban without conceding
If you dispute the debt but need to travel, the commentary on Article 325 describes two security routes: a bank guarantee, or a deposit of the claimed amount with the court. A personal surety is also mentioned, where the judge accepts it. Security keeps the dispute alive while allowing you to travel; it is a decision to make with a lawyer, because the terms of the guarantee and the court’s approval both matter.
Challenging the order
A ban that should not have been ordered, for example because the debt is not due, the amount is below the threshold, or the creditor missed its filing deadline, can be challenged before the court. Commentary refers to a grievance procedure with short time limits. This is court work for a lawyer, not a PRO.
Every legitimate route in this section goes through the court, the prosecution or an official payment channel tied to your case. Anyone who offers to make a travel ban in Dubai disappear for a fee, outside those channels, is offering something that does not exist. That includes people who approach travellers at airports.
Travel ban in Dubai: automatic lifting since 2023
Since 2023, Dubai and the federal system have connected their systems so that more bans lift as soon as the reason ends:

“Automatic” means the systems talk to each other; it does not mean the ban lifts by itself with time, and it does not change how to check travel ban records afterwards. Each of these changes is triggered by something the person does, usually paying, or by a court decision. We have not seen an official statement that Dubai Courts civil bans can yet be paid off through the Dubai Police service; if a payment option exists for your circular, the screen shows it.
After you lift a travel ban: confirm the travel ban status
People stopped for a debt they had already paid usually hit a record that was not updated. The fix costs nothing.
- Keep the evidence: payment receipt, the creditor’s release or consent letter, and any lifting decision or SMS.
- Recheck the Circulars and Travel Bans service a few days after lifting, and again shortly before you travel. Save the dated screenshot.
- Recheck the other emirate if the case was outside Dubai.
- Carry the documents when you travel for the first time after a ban, on paper and on your phone.
- If the circular is still there, go back to the issuing authority with the documents, not to the airport.
Checking your travel ban status from outside the UAE
A travel ban in Dubai stops departure, so people abroad usually ask a slightly different question: if I come back, will I be stopped when I try to leave again? The checks are the same, and most of them work from abroad.
- Dubai Police service: Gulf News reported in January 2026 that the upgraded service works inside and outside the UAE with UAE PASS.
- Estafser: an online enquiry by unified number, which you can submit from anywhere.
- Ministry of Justice: My Cases with UAE PASS.
- Phone: Dubai Police 901, ADJD 600 599 799 and MOJ 800 333333 are UAE numbers; from abroad, use the websites or a representative.

A travel ban in Dubai at the airport: what happens
Passport control reads the circulars against your identity. If one matches, you are asked to step aside, which is how most people first learn of a travel ban in Dubai, and the officer can usually tell you that a circular exists and which authority issued it. The officer cannot lift it, accept payment for a court debt or reach the judge at that hour. That is the whole case for checking beforehand.
- Ask which authority issued it and for any reference, and write it down. That one piece of information decides the next step.
- Arrange the immediate practicalities: somewhere to stay, a working phone, and a message to anyone expecting you.
- Then take advice: a lawyer for a court or prosecution matter; the official payment channel if it is a fine or rent amount you accept.
Checking travel ban status for someone else
The official checks are built for a person to look at their own record, with their own UAE PASS or identity details. Running a check on another person means using their identity data. Do it only with their knowledge and for their benefit; anyone who needs to know should ask the person to run the check and share the dated result.
Before leaving the UAE for good: a checklist
Most people who find a travel ban in Dubai years later left without closing something. The list below is how to avoid being one of them. Start a month before you go, not in the final week.

Travel ban in Dubai: worked cases
These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.
Case 1: clear in Dubai, but a car loan was signed in Sharjah
A resident living in Dubai for three years had lived in Sharjah before that, where she took a car loan that she stopped paying when she sold the car privately. The Dubai Police check was clear, and she booked a holiday. We asked where the loan was signed and suggested she log in to the Ministry of Justice portal with UAE PASS, because Sharjah follows the federal courts. My Cases showed an execution file. She took legal advice, agreed a settlement with the bank and had the release filed; under the federal system the ban was lifted once the case was settled, and she rechecked her travel ban status before flying.
Lesson: the Dubai check covers Dubai. Your footprint decides which checks you need.
Case 2: a security cheque from an old tenancy
A tenant left a Dubai flat after a dispute with the landlord over the final months’ rent. Two years later, the Dubai Police service showed a circular from the Rental Dispute Centre. The amount matched the unpaid rent and charges he accepted he owed. Following the 2026 upgrade as reported, he paid through the Dubai Police service and the ban was lifted automatically. He saved the payment confirmation and a dated clear result.
Lesson: for a rent circular you accept, the online payment route is quick. If you disputed the amount, the right place would be the Rental Dispute Centre, not the payment button.
Case 3: a criminal fine he did not know about
A driver involved in a minor incident was fined in absentia in a criminal judgment and had since changed his mobile number, so he never received the prosecution’s SMS. A check before a trip showed a circular from the Public Prosecution. He updated his contact details, received the payment link and paid through the Smart Payment of Fines channel; the travel ban and warrant were lifted automatically, as the service is described. He kept the cancellation notice.
Lesson: keep the mobile number on your identity record current. Notices go to the number on file.
Case 4: a disputed credit card debt and an urgent trip
A resident disputed the balance a bank claimed on a credit card, and the bank obtained a precautionary travel ban in Dubai. He needed to travel for a family emergency. We explained that this was a court matter and referred him to a lawyer. On the lawyer’s advice he deposited the claimed amount with the court, one of the grounds described for Article 325, so the court could lift a travel ban while the dispute continued. Our part was limited to his residence renewal, which was falling due while the case ran.
Lesson: security is a way to travel without conceding the dispute, and it is a lawyer’s decision to structure.
Case 5: leaving the UAE permanently
A family was relocating abroad after nine years. Six weeks before leaving they ran the Dubai Police check, the Abu Dhabi Estafser enquiry (an old employer had been based there) and the MOJ portal. All were clear. They closed the credit cards with clearance letters, collected two security cheques from a former landlord and reran the checks in the final week.
Lesson: checking early turns a possible problem into a to-do list.

How do I check if I have a travel ban in Dubai?
Use the Dubai Police Circulars and Travel Bans service in the Dubai Police app or on its website. u.ae describes it as having no fee, using your Emirates ID number; the upgraded version reported in 2026 uses UAE PASS login and shows the issuing authority. You can also call Dubai Police on 901 or visit a police station with your Emirates ID and passport.
Does the Dubai Police check cover the whole UAE?
No. u.ae states that it covers the emirate of Dubai only. Abu Dhabi cases are checked through the Judicial Department’s Estafser service, Ras Al Khaimah through its own Public Prosecution, and Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah through the Ministry of Justice portal, because those four follow the federal courts.
Can I check my travel ban status with my passport number?
The official online checks use your Emirates ID number, UAE PASS or, for Estafser, your unified number. A passport number is used at police stations and counters, and to find your unified number through GDRFA’s no-fee enquiry. Be wary of private sites that charge to search a UAE-wide database by passport; no official source we used describes one.
How do I check for a travel ban in Abu Dhabi?
u.ae names Estafser, run by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, which lets you check whether the Public Prosecution requests you for any claims. It uses your unified number. Gulf News reported in 2025 that most Estafser enquiries are answered within one working day. ADJD’s call centre is 600 599 799.
What causes a travel ban in Dubai?
A travel ban in Dubai most often follows a civil or commercial claim, such as an unpaid loan, credit card or bounced cheque, where the creditor asks the court for a ban. Criminal cases, unpaid criminal fines, rent claims at the Rental Dispute Centre and family custody matters can also lead to one. Immigration fines and labour bans are separate restrictions, not travel bans.
Is there a minimum debt for a travel ban?
Legal commentary on Article 324 of the Civil Procedure Code (Federal Decree-Law 42 of 2022) describes a minimum of AED 10,000 for a precautionary travel ban on a debtor, with a due and known debt and serious reason to fear the debtor will leave. The threshold is reported not to apply to some obligations, such as maintenance and wages. The judge decides on the file.
How do I lift a travel ban after paying the debt?
Make sure the payment or the creditor’s written consent is filed in the court case, and that someone asks the court to lift the order if it does not happen automatically. Keep the receipt and release letter, then recheck the Dubai Police service a few days later and again before you travel. Paying the bank alone does not change the court record.
Can I lift a travel ban without paying?

Is a bounced cheque still a crime in the UAE?
Since 2 January 2022, a cheque returned for insufficient funds is mainly enforced as an executive document through the execution judge, whose powers include a travel ban. Criminal liability remains for bad-faith conduct, such as closing the account, withdrawing the balance after issuing the cheque or instructing the bank not to pay without a lawful reason, as reported from Central Bank guidance.
How long does it take to lift a travel ban?
For criminal fines paid through Dubai Public Prosecution’s smart payment, and rent amounts paid online through Dubai Police, lifting is reported to be automatic. Federal cases are reported to lift automatically once eligible. For civil cases in Dubai Courts, it depends on the court acting on the payment, consent or security, so allow time and do not book travel until you have rechecked.
Can I check my travel ban status from outside the UAE?
Yes, for most checks of your travel ban status. The upgraded Dubai Police service is reported to work abroad with UAE PASS, Estafser is an online enquiry and the Ministry of Justice portal uses UAE PASS. A lawyer can check court files, and a PRO can handle the immigration side under power of attorney. Do not fly back simply to find out.
Can GDRFA or ICP lift a travel ban?
No. GDRFA Dubai and ICP hold immigration records, such as residence permits, fines and entry bans. A travel ban comes from a court, the Public Prosecution or a judicial committee, and only that issuer can lift it. GDRFA and ICP matter when you also need to regularise your residence or leave after the ban ends.
Will I be arrested at the airport if I have a travel ban?
A travel ban in Dubai stops you leaving; it is not in itself an arrest order. If the check shows an arrest circular or warrant, that is different and you should get legal advice before going anywhere near an airport. In either case, the airport cannot resolve the matter, which is why you should check before travelling.

Can I have a travel ban without being told?
Yes. A case can be filed and a ban recorded without you being aware of it, particularly where notice went to an old address, an old mobile number or a previous employer. That is why it is worth checking before you travel rather than finding out at passport control.
Does overstaying my visa cause a travel ban?
Not usually on its own. Overstay fines are an immigration debt, not a court order, but they accrue at AED 50 a day and must be settled before you can exit, and prolonged overstay can lead to further consequences. See our guide to the overstay fine per day and what happens when a visa expires.
Is a labour ban the same as a travel ban?
No. A labour ban, recorded by MOHRE, restricts new employment; it does not stop you flying. A travel ban comes from a court, the Public Prosecution or a judicial committee and stops you leaving the UAE. They are lifted in entirely different ways, so establish which one you have before paying anyone to deal with it.

This guide has been rewritten. The earlier version described the Dubai Police check only as a financial-cases tool by Emirates ID number; it now also reflects the Circulars and Travel Bans upgrade reported in December 2025 and January 2026 (criminal and rental circulars, UAE PASS, online payment and automatic lifting for Rental Dispute Centre bans), with the u.ae description shown alongside. It said GDRFA’s unified number enquiry needs only passport details and nationality; the form also asks for date of birth and gender. It said only an in-person enquiry carries a fee, which no official source supports, and it made statements about which causes are most common that we cannot evidence; both were removed.
