Key takeaways
- Dependants of a Golden Visa holder receive residency matching the sponsor’s term — typically 10 years, not the usual two or three.
- The ordinary salary threshold does not apply in the same way. Eligibility was established when the Golden Visa was granted.
- Sons over 18 are treated far more generously than on a standard residence visa — the usual age cut-off does not bite the same way.
- If the sponsor’s Golden Visa is cancelled, every dependent visa attached to it falls with it.
The long validity is the headline feature of the Golden Visa, but for most holders the more consequential benefit is what it does for their family. A standard residence visa puts a family on a two-year cycle of renewals, salary tests and age limits. A Golden Visa largely removes all three.
This guide sets out what family sponsorship actually looks like from a Golden Visa, where it differs from the standard route, and the conditions that still apply.
What changes, and what does not
| Standard residence visa | Golden Visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Dependant validity | 1–3 years | Matches the sponsor’s permit — 10 years on most Golden routes, but 5 years where the sponsor qualified through real estate |
| Salary threshold | Applies | Not applied the same way |
| Son over 18 | Restricted | Substantially relaxed |
| Renewal frequency | Every 1–3 years | Once a decade |
| Housing requirement | Applies | Still assessed |
| Medical insurance | Mandatory | Mandatory |
| Attestation | Required | Required |
| Domestic workers | Limited | More generous allowance |
A family of four on standard visas goes through roughly twenty renewal transactions in a decade — each with medicals, fees, document checks and the risk of a lapse.
The same family on a Golden Visa does it once. The cost saving is real but secondary to removing twenty opportunities for something to go wrong.
Who you can sponsor
Spouse
Straightforward, provided the marriage certificate is fully attested for use in the UAE. This is the most common point of delay — a certificate issued abroad needs the complete chain, which can take weeks. Start it before the Golden Visa is even approved if you can.
Children
Daughters and sons are both sponsorable. The meaningful difference from the standard route concerns adult sons: on an ordinary residence visa, sponsoring a son past the usual age limit requires him to be in full-time education or to meet specific exemptions, and it is a recurring source of stress. Golden Visa holders face substantially relaxed treatment here.
The distinction matters most to families whose children are approaching or past eighteen — it can be the deciding factor in whether the Golden Visa is worth pursuing at all. Our guide on age limits for sponsoring sons and daughters covers the standard rules for comparison.
Parents
Parent sponsorship is possible but is assessed on its own terms rather than granted automatically. Expect medical insurance appropriate to age — which for an older parent can be the single largest recurring cost — and, on standard arrangements, a refundable deposit. Confirm the current position before committing, as parent sponsorship rules are among the more frequently adjusted.
Domestic workers
Golden Visa holders are permitted a more generous domestic worker allowance than standard residents. The workers themselves hold ordinary sponsored visas with their own requirements and renewal cycles — their status does not inherit the ten-year term.
What still applies
The Golden Visa removes several obstacles. It does not remove these.
Attestation
Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE must be fully attested. No exemption. Budget three to eight weeks and see the attestation cost guide for what it involves.
Medical fitness and Emirates ID
Every dependant over the applicable age completes the medical and biometrics like any other applicant.
Medical insurance
Mandatory for every dependant, and priced by age. For a family including elderly parents this is a substantial annual commitment that no visa category waives.
Suitable accommodation
A registered tenancy contract or property ownership is still assessed. The Ejari or title deed must be in the sponsor’s name.
A clean file
Outstanding fines against the sponsor or any dependant will hold the application, exactly as on the standard route.
The dependency nobody mentions
Every dependent visa issued under a Golden Visa is attached to that Golden Visa. If the sponsor’s status ends — cancellation, non-renewal, or loss of the underlying qualifying condition — the dependants’ residency ends with it.
This is not different in principle from any sponsored visa, but the ten-year term makes it easy to forget. Two situations are worth planning for specifically:
- Property-based Golden Visas. If the qualifying property is sold and nothing replaces it, the basis for the visa may no longer hold — and the family’s residency rests on it.
- Adult children approaching independence. A son or daughter who will build a career here is generally better served by establishing their own residency in time rather than remaining a dependant indefinitely.
Sequencing a family application
Start attestation immediately
Before the Golden Visa is approved. It is the longest step and the only one that cannot be accelerated from the UAE.
Confirm the sponsor’s file is clear
Fines and unresolved cases stop family applications as reliably as they stop any other.
Arrange insurance before applying
Particularly for older dependants, where quotes vary enormously and take time to secure.
Register the tenancy properly
Ejari must be current and in the sponsor’s name. An expired or unregistered contract is a routine cause of refusal.
Apply for the whole family together
Documents overlap heavily and processing in one batch is faster and cheaper than sequentially.
What it costs across ten years
The financial case is usually presented as fee savings, which understates it. Here is a family of four — two adults, two children — compared over a decade.
| Standard visas | Golden Visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal rounds per dependant | 4 – 5 | 0 |
| Total dependant transactions | 12 – 15 | 3 |
| Medical fitness tests | 12 – 15 | 3 |
| Emirates ID issuances | 12 – 15 | 3 |
| Indicative fees, dependants | AED 25,000 – 45,000 | AED 6,000 – 12,000 |
Medical insurance is excluded because it is annual and mandatory either way — it does not differ by route and remains the largest recurring family cost, particularly where elderly parents are sponsored.
The saving of roughly AED 20,000 to 30,000 is worth having. The more valuable difference is the removal of twelve to fifteen separate opportunities for a renewal to be missed, a document to expire, or a fine to accumulate quietly against a file. Families rarely get into difficulty because a visa was expensive. They get into difficulty because a renewal was overlooked during a busy month.
Common mistakes on family files
- Starting attestation last. It should be first. Certificates can be attested long before a Golden Visa decision arrives, and doing so removes the longest step from the critical path.
- Assuming parents are automatic. They are not, and the insurance cost for an elderly parent frequently exceeds every other line combined.
- An Ejari in the wrong name. The tenancy must be registered to the sponsor. A contract in a spouse or company name causes avoidable refusals.
- Applying one dependant at a time. Documents overlap heavily; a single batch is faster and cheaper.
- Forgetting the passport validity rule. Many applications require six months remaining. Renew children passports before applying, not during.
- Treating adult children as permanent dependants. A son or daughter building a career here is better served establishing independent status while the option is straightforward.
Golden Visa sponsorship removes several standard obstacles but not all of them. The common family visa refusal reasons — accommodation, attestation and outstanding fines — still apply.

Family sponsorship questions
How long is a dependant’s visa under a Golden Visa?
It matches the sponsor’s term — typically ten years — rather than the one to three years of a standard dependent visa. This is the principal practical advantage of the route for families.
Does the salary requirement apply?
Not in the way it does on a standard residence visa. Eligibility was already established when the Golden Visa was granted, so the ordinary minimum salary test for family sponsorship does not gate the application in the same manner.
Can I sponsor my son who is over 18?
Golden Visa holders face substantially relaxed treatment compared with the standard route, where sponsoring an adult son generally requires full-time education or a specific exemption. For families with children near or past eighteen this is often the deciding advantage.
Can I sponsor my parents?
Parent sponsorship is possible but assessed on its own terms rather than granted automatically. Age-appropriate medical insurance is mandatory and can be the largest recurring cost. Confirm the current position — parent rules are adjusted more often than most.
Do dependants still need attested certificates?
Yes. Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE require full attestation with no exemption for Golden Visa holders. Allow three to eight weeks and begin before the Golden Visa is even approved.
What happens to my family if my Golden Visa is cancelled?
Dependent visas are attached to the sponsor’s status and end with it. This matters particularly on property-based Golden Visas, where selling the qualifying asset without replacing it can affect the basis on which the whole family’s residency rests.
Is medical insurance still required?
Yes, for every dependant, priced by age. No visa category waives it, and for families including elderly parents it represents a significant ongoing commitment that should be budgeted before applying.
Please note. Golden Visa family sponsorship rules are set by the ICP and issuing authorities and are reviewed periodically. Information reflects the position in August 2026. Parent sponsorship and domestic worker allowances change more frequently than most provisions — confirm before committing. General information, not legal advice.
If you would rather have it handled
Golden Visa applications fail on preparation far more often than on eligibility — a document that was never attested, an equivalency that was never obtained, a supporting file assembled in the wrong order.
We prepare and submit these as part of our PRO services in Dubai, including the attestation and equivalency work that usually sits behind them.
