Because visas run two years, a son who was 17 at the last renewal can be 19 at the next. Nothing warns you. The renewal simply fails, and by then you may be inside a grace period you did not know had started.

Student visa — the usual route
Sponsored by the educational institution while in full-time study. This is what most families use, and it works well provided the enrolment is genuine and continuous.
Employment visa

Student visa sponsorship needs a confirmed place, and institutions have their own timelines. Beginning six months before the eighteenth birthday makes this routine. Beginning after the renewal is refused makes it stressful and sometimes expensive.
