Emirates ID Biometrics Appointment 2026: Who Must Attend, How to Book or Reschedule, Dubai Centres and What to Bring

An Emirates ID biometrics appointment is the in-person visit to an ICP customer happiness centre where an applicant aged 15 or over has ten fingerprints and a signature captured for a new, renewed or replacement Emirates ID. It is issued after the application has been submitted and paid, it must be attended by the applicant personally, and the card cannot be printed until it is done. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) issues the Emirates ID in every emirate, including Dubai, so the Emirates ID biometrics step is the same whether your residence was issued by GDRFA Dubai or by ICP.

This guide is written from ICP’s service cards, its customer happiness centre pages, its FAQ and the u.ae government portal, all checked on 24 September 2026, with press reports used only where they are labelled. It covers who needs Emirates ID biometrics and who is exempt, how the fingerprint appointment is issued, how to book, reschedule or deal with a missed slot, every Dubai centre with its published hours, what to bring, and what happens once your fingerprints are taken. How long the card then takes, how to track it and what to do if it is late each have their own guide, linked where they come up.

The fingerprints themselves take minutes. The trouble is almost always around them: a slot sent to a mobile number nobody checks, a centre chosen on the far side of the city, a medical booked for one week and biometrics for the next, a family split across three different days, or an application that quietly lapses because the Emirates ID fingerprint appointment was missed. What we do

• Type and submit the application correctly, with a photo that meets ICP’s specifications, so the file is not returned before a slot is even issued.
• Choose the biometrics centre with you. Close to home or work, open late if you need an evening slot, and inside a medical fitness centre if you still have the visa medical to do.
• Book or move the fingerprint appointment through ICP’s channels, and send you the fingerprint appointment in writing with the address and the centre’s published hours.
• Group family members into the same visit where the system allows it, so parents and teenagers attend together.
• Check who actually needs to attend. Children under 15 do not, and residents over 70 renewing with prints on file do not, so nobody makes a wasted trip.
• Follow the file after Emirates ID biometrics until the card is printed and delivered, and tell you straight away if ICP asks for anything more.

How it works

1. WhatsApp us a copy of the passport, the entry permit or current Emirates ID, and tell us which emirate issued the residence.
2. We confirm the application type (new, renewal or replacement), the government fees and our service fee in writing.
3. We submit and pay, then book or confirm the Emirates ID biometrics appointment at the biometrics centre that suits you.
4. You attend with the original passport and the documents on our checklist. It is the one step nobody can do for you.
5. We track the card to printing and delivery, and deal with any request from ICP.

What it costs

There is no separate government fee for the fingerprint appointment itself. What you pay is the Emirates ID fee on ICP’s service card (for residents, AED 100 per year of residence plus AED 100 smart services fee on a new card), which we pass on at cost with the receipt. Our own service fee depends on whether we handle only the Emirates ID or the whole residence, and it is quoted in writing before we start. Our general approach to pricing is on the fees page.

Why residents use us

• We publish our sources. Every rule in this guide links to the ICP page or government portal it came from, and we say plainly where the official pages are silent.
• We cover both systems: residence at GDRFA for Dubai, and residence and Emirates ID at ICP for every emirate.
• We tell you when you do not need us. Rescheduling a single slot on ICP’s smart services has no fee and is simple, and we will say so.
• You can walk in. Our office is in Al Barsha 1, open by appointment; whatsApp us any time, 24 hours; office open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00 (Dubai time).

What Emirates ID biometrics actually are

“Biometrics” is used loosely online to mean anything that happens at the ICP counter. ICP’s own service cards are more precise. The step is described as completing “the fingerprint and signature procedures” at the Authority’s service centres, and ICP’s FAQ, describing its school programme, refers to “capturing 10 fingerprints”. The ICP work bundle FAQ describes the same step as “biometric data registration (fingerprint and photo)”.

In practice, then, an Emirates ID biometrics visit captures three things that end up in the card’s chip and on ICP’s register:

Two things that some websites say are captured do not appear on ICP’s current service cards. The first is an iris scan: ICP’s Emirates ID cards list fingerprints and a signature only, so treat claims that your iris is scanned for the card with caution. The second is a medical check: the visa medical is a separate test run by the health authority, even when it happens in the same building.

The fingerprints are what make the card useful. ICP runs a validation gateway that lets banks and other licensed bodies verify a cardholder by fingerprint against the card, which is why a poor capture can cause problems long after the card arrives. It is worth taking the capture seriously rather than rushing through it.

Who needs an Emirates ID biometrics appointment

The rule is set out in the same words on ICP’s three main card services: new card issuance, renewal and replacement of a lost or damaged card. Anyone who “has completed 15 years of age” must complete the fingerprint and signature procedures at an ICP service centre. The u.ae portal repeats the age-15 rule. What varies is whether you are called on a renewal, and the handful of groups ICP treats differently.

The age-15 rule in practice

The threshold is “completed 15 years”, which means the fifteenth birthday has passed. A child who is 14 years and 11 months when the application is typed is not called; a child who turned 15 last week is. The age that counts is the age on the date of application, not the age on the card’s expiry date.

This matters most at family renewals. Parents renewing four cards together often assume the whole family goes, or that nobody does. The right answer is usually a mix: the parents and any child aged 15 or over may be called, while younger children stay at home. If a child’s previous card was issued at, say, age 12, the renewal after the fifteenth birthday is the first one where that child will be fingerprinted, so expect a fingerprint appointment even though the parents’ own renewals go through without one.

Renewals: when Emirates ID biometrics are reused and when you are called again

ICP’s renewal card does not promise that renewals skip Emirates ID biometrics. Its step list reads “complete fingerprint capture and signature at service centres (if required)”. The only blanket exemption ICP publishes is for residents aged 70 and over whose prints are already on file. For everyone else, the system decides whether existing prints can be reused.

ICP does not publish the criteria it uses. From the wording of its cards and FAQ, the situations where a new capture is most likely are:

• Your last card was issued before you turned 15, so there are no adult prints on file.
• Your record has no signature, or the previous capture was incomplete or of poor quality.
• You are replacing a lost or damaged card, where ICP repeats the 15+ fingerprint rule.
• Your personal data has changed materially, for example a correction to your name or date of birth (see Emirates ID name correction).

If a renewal generates an Emirates ID fingerprint appointment, attend it. There is no published route to argue that your old prints should be reused, and the card will not print until the step is completed.

Children and newborns

ICP’s enrolment strategy page records a decision to cancel the requirement for children under 15 to go to registration centres, with their photographs handled from the application instead. Current service cards are consistent with that: fingerprints and signature start at 15. A newborn’s Emirates ID is applied for with the baby’s residence, using a photo that meets ICP’s specifications (plain light background, face clearly visible, nobody else in the frame). The earlier version of this guide said children under 15 must still attend for a photograph. That is not what ICP’s pages say today, and we have corrected it below.

Senior residents and people of determination

ICP’s page for people of determination and senior citizens sets out three things relevant to Emirates ID biometrics. Senior residents aged 70 and over are not fingerprinted when renewing if their prints are already held. Those who are unable to visit a centre can have the urgent service fee waived and are exempt from late payment penalties, subject to proof of age. People of determination have a full exemption from ICP service fees and financial guarantees.

At the centres themselves, ICP lists priority queues, wheelchairs, wide entrances, large lifts and reserved parking for both groups. What ICP does not publish is a general home-visit biometrics service for residents. Its “Taqdeer package” delivers proactive Emirates ID and passport renewals through ICP staff who visit the applicant, but the FAQ limits it to senior citizens aged 60 and over who receive social welfare or hold a people of determination card, and the passport element suggests it is aimed at UAE nationals. If a relative genuinely cannot travel to a biometrics centre, call ICP on 600522222 before the fingerprint appointment and ask what arrangement applies to them.

Students: the Basmah 15 programme

ICP’s FAQ describes “Basmah 15” as capturing the 10 fingerprints of school students aged 15 and above on school premises, “without the need to visit Customer Happiness Centres”. Gulf News reported the launch on 1 April 2026. ICP does not publish a list of participating schools, so ask the school before assuming the teenager’s fingerprints will be taken there. If the school does not take part, the student attends a biometrics centre in the normal way.

How the Emirates ID fingerprint appointment is triggered

You cannot book Emirates ID biometrics on their own. The fingerprint appointment is a step inside an Emirates ID application, so it only exists once an application has been submitted and paid. The route to that application depends on what you are doing.

Since April 2022 the Emirates ID has replaced the residence sticker in the passport as proof of residence, and the residence and ID applications were merged into one process, as The National reported at the time. For Dubai residents this means the residence is decided by GDRFA while the card, and therefore the fingerprints, are ICP’s. That split is why a GDRFA approval does not by itself produce an Emirates ID; the ICP Emirates ID biometrics step still has to happen. Our ICP vs GDRFA guide explains the division in detail.

The SMS, the form and the application number

Once the application is registered, you should receive the Emirates ID biometrics appointment details. In our experience they arrive by SMS to the mobile number on the application, and the printed or PDF application form carries a QR code with the centre, date and time. ICP’s app manual shows the same step from the inside: after submitting a service, the applicant reaches a “Book an Appointment” screen, and can choose “Book Later” to postpone the choice.

Keep three things from the application safe, because every later step asks for them:

• The application number. ICP application numbers start with 010, and this is the number used on ICP’s ID card status page.
• The mobile number and email given on the application. Appointment changes on smart services are verified against the email used for the application.
• The application form or receipt with its QR code. Smart Salem, for example, asks for a printed Emirates ID application form for its fast-track biometrics package.

How to book, reschedule or cancel an Emirates ID biometrics appointment

ICP does not publish a separate service card for booking or changing biometrics slots, so the steps below combine ICP’s own app manual and FAQ with a Gulf News walkthrough of the smart services screens. Menu names change from time to time; if a label below does not match the screen you see, look for “appointment” or “enrolment” under additional services.

Booking a fingerprint appointment when you apply

1. Log in to ICP smart services (smartservices.icp.gov.ae) or the ICP app with UAE PASS. ICP’s new and renewal cards list UAE PASS login as an access requirement.
2. Submit the Emirates ID service (new, renewal or replacement), attach any documents the system cannot fetch, and pay.
3. On the “Book an Appointment” screen, choose the emirate, the customer happiness centre and a date and time from those offered.
4. Save or print the confirmation. If you chose “Book Later”, return to the application and book before the deadline shown.

If a typing centre submits the application, it can choose the fingerprint appointment with you at the counter. Ask for the biometrics centre you actually want. It is common to be booked at whichever centre the typist uses most often.

Rescheduling

Gulf News (December 2023) described the smart services route as: Public Services, then Additional Services, then “Search/Modify for Enrollment Appointment”. You enter the email used on the application and one reference (the PRAN, the request number or the reference number), click Search and then Edit, confirm the passport number, date of birth and nationality, and choose a new emirate, centre, date and time. The service was described as having no fee. The same article notes you can reach it by scanning the QR code on the application form.

1. Open ICP smart services and find the appointment search or modify option.
2. Enter the application email and your application or PRAN number.
3. Choose a new centre and slot from the ones available.
4. Download or print the updated form, and delete the old SMS so nobody attends the wrong slot.

If the online route fails, call ICP on 600522222 (+971 600 522222 from abroad; ICP’s centre pages also list 171 inside the UAE), or ask the typing centre that submitted the application to move it.

Cancelling

There is no published “cancel appointment” service, and no reason to use one. Cancelling the fingerprint appointment without a new one simply leaves an application that cannot finish, and ICP’s cards say applications whose procedures are not completed within the specified period are cancelled. If you no longer need the card at all, for example because the residence itself is being cancelled, the Emirates ID application falls away with that process; see how to cancel an employment visa. Do you need an appointment to walk in?

ICP’s FAQ is direct: “an appointment is required in advance for certain cases in which the customer needs to visit the centre (biometric/fingerprint procedures)”. Simple enquiries do not need one. Turning up without a slot for fingerprints is therefore a gamble on the centre’s discretion, not a right. Emirates ID biometrics centres in Dubai

ICP lists seven customer happiness centres and offices in Dubai, and every one of them offers fingerprint capture. The addresses and hours below are taken from each centre’s own ICP page on 24 September 2026. None of the pages lists Saturday or Sunday hours.

Which Dubai centre to choose

Three practical points decide it for most people.

• Do you still need the visa medical? Al Nahda sits inside a Salem medical examination centre and Al Baraha inside a medical fitness centre. Booking the medical and the fingerprints for the same morning at the same address saves a whole trip. Our UAE visa medical test guide covers the medical side.
• Do you need an evening slot? Only Al Yalayis (until 20:00) and Al Nahda (until 19:00) publish evening hours on weekdays. The others close at 17:00 or earlier.
• Where do you live or work? Al Barsha serves the west of the city, Al Yalayis the Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park side, Al Nahda and Al Rashidiya the east, Alghazal the centre, and Al Baraha Deira.

Alghazal is listed on ICP’s site under the page address of the old Al Karama centre. If an older SMS, map pin or website sends you to “Al Karama” for Emirates ID biometrics, check the address on your appointment rather than going to Karama.

Biometrics centres in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates

You can normally choose any centre in any emirate when you book, whichever emirate issued your residence. ICP’s centre list on 24 September 2026 showed the following. Some centres were marked as closed for maintenance, so check the list again before choosing.

Two details are easy to miss. First, not every ICP office captures fingerprints: the Sharjah General Directorate’s page lists enquiry services but does not mention fingerprinting, so book a biometrics centre whose page says “fingerprint capture”. Second, the Mussafah centre takes men only for fingerprints. Women booked there by mistake should reschedule to Khalifa, Khalifa Medical City or another Abu Dhabi centre.

What to bring to the Emirates ID biometrics centre

ICP’s service cards list the documents for the application, not for the fingerprint appointment. The biometrics centre’s job is to confirm that the person in front of it is the person on the application, and then capture fingerprints and a signature. This is what that requires.

You do not normally need a printed photo, because the photo is part of the application. It does no harm to carry two recent photos that meet ICP’s specification, in case the counter finds a problem with the one on file. Leave rings and bandages off your fingers if you can, and do not apply henna in the days before.

A passport copy is not a substitute for the original. If your passport is with an embassy for renewal, move the fingerprint appointment rather than attending with a copy. What happens at the Emirates ID biometrics appointment

The visit is short and follows the same sequence at every ICP centre we know of. ICP does not publish a standard duration. Its enrolment strategy page, written when registration was first rolled out, set a target of cutting the transaction from 20 minutes to 8 to 10 minutes; treat that as an old target, not a promise.

1. Arrive early and take a ticket. Show the SMS or QR code at reception. Seniors aged 70 and over and people of determination can ask for the priority queue.
2. Identity check. The officer compares your passport and face with the application and its photo.
3. Fingerprints. Each finger is placed on a scanner, usually four fingers of each hand together and then both thumbs, or one finger at a time. The officer watches the screen and repeats any finger that does not register.
4. Signature. You sign on an electronic pad. This is the signature printed on the card, so sign as you normally do.
5. Confirmation. The officer confirms the capture is complete. You leave with nothing new in hand; the file moves on electronically.

Before you leave, ask the officer one question: “Are my Emirates ID biometrics complete for this application?” A clear yes is worth more than any receipt, because the most frustrating delays come from captures that were started but not accepted.

Your photo: ICP’s specifications

The photo on your card is the one on your application, not one taken at the counter. ICP’s personal photo specifications say the photo must be recent (no more than six months old), in colour, on a plain light-coloured background, with your head and the top of your shoulders filling 70 to 80 percent of the frame. The expression must be neutral with the mouth closed. Glasses are allowed only if the eyes are clearly visible, with no tinted lenses and no reflection; ICP’s FAQ adds that hats and sunglasses are not allowed and only medical glasses are permitted. Head coverings are allowed for religious reasons provided the face is fully visible from chin to forehead and both edges of the face show.

For renewals ICP adds one rule that trips people up: the new photo “must not be identical to the current photograph printed on the Emirates ID card”. Reusing the old digital file is the quickest way to have a renewal returned.

If your fingerprints will not scan

Worn, dry or damaged fingertips are common among people who do manual work, older residents and anyone with a skin condition. ICP does not publish its procedure for prints that cannot be captured, so the following is practical advice rather than an official rule.

• Prepare the skin. Moisturise the evening before, but do not arrive with fresh lotion on your hands. Avoid heavy manual work, solvents and henna in the days beforehand.
• Tell the officer early about cuts, bandages, missing fingers or a skin condition, rather than letting the scanner fail repeatedly.
• Ask what has been recorded if some fingers could not be captured, and whether you need to return. Do not leave assuming it will sort itself out.
• If you are called back for a new capture later, treat it as a new appointment and attend it. The card will not print until ICP accepts the capture.

Faster options: urgent service, Smart Salem and home visits

People who need the card quickly usually ask for a “VIP biometrics” appointment. What exists, officially, is narrower than the name suggests.

We could not find any official ICP service offering Emirates ID biometrics at home for ordinary residents on payment of a fee. ICP’s enrolment strategy mentions mobile registration devices for registering workers “at their places of work or residence”, but that page describes the original national registration drive, not a service you can book today. If you are told that a private company can send someone to your villa to take your Emirates ID fingerprints, ask which ICP service it is using and check it with ICP on 600522222 before paying.

Two further points on speed. The urgent fee buys a faster card, not an earlier fingerprint slot, and for residents it only applies to replacements. And the fastest route for a new Dubai resident is usually the least glamorous: book the medical and the fingerprints at the same centre on the same morning, at Al Nahda, Al Baraha or through Smart Salem.

If you miss your Emirates ID biometrics appointment

The earlier version of this guide said a missed slot cancels nothing and the file simply waits. ICP’s service cards say otherwise. The new card, renewal and replacement cards each carry a condition that the application is cancelled if the required procedures, including biometrics, are not completed within the specified period. ICP does not publish how long that period is.

What a missed slot means in practice:

• Nothing happens on the day. You will not normally get a warning. The application sits at the Emirates ID biometrics stage.
• The clock keeps running. If the application is not completed within ICP’s period, it can be cancelled. Whether fees are refunded on a cancelled application is not published.
• Your residence deadline may be running too. A new resident has to complete the residence within 60 days of entry, according to both GDRFA and ICP, as covered in our UAE visa processing times guide. A stalled biometrics step can hold up the whole file.
• Late renewal fines keep accruing if your old card has already expired. u.ae and ICP give AED 20 per day up to AED 1,000 once the grace period has passed; see our guide to the Emirates ID fine.

What to do:

1. Reschedule straight away through ICP smart services or the ICP app, using the application email and number.
2. If the system will not let you, call ICP on 600522222 or ask the typing centre that submitted the application.
3. If the application has already been cancelled, a new application is needed. Check the status first on ICP’s ID card status page so you know which situation you are in (see our Emirates ID status check guide).

Emirates ID biometrics and travel: why it cannot be done abroad

Every fingerprint capture point ICP lists is a centre or office inside the UAE, and ICP’s cards require the fingerprints to be given “through the Authority’s service centres”. There is no embassy, consulate or overseas route for Emirates ID biometrics.

That has three consequences for people who travel:

• Renewing from abroad. The renewal can be submitted online through ICP with UAE PASS. If no new capture is required, the card can be printed and couriered to your UAE address while you are away. If biometrics are required, the application waits for your return, subject to ICP’s completion period.
• New residents. The fingerprint appointment falls between entry and the card. Leaving the country before biometrics simply pauses the file, and the residence deadline keeps running.
• Long absences. If you have been outside the UAE for more than six months, the residence itself may be at risk. That is a separate question, covered in our re-entry permit guide.

If you must travel between application and appointment, book the fingerprint appointment for the first working day after your return and keep the confirmation with you.

Dubai and the other emirates: who does what

For Emirates ID biometrics the process is the same everywhere, because ICP owns the card nationwide. The difference is only in who handles the residence around it.

The first digit of a residence file number shows the issuing emirate (1 Abu Dhabi, 2 Dubai, 3 Sharjah, 4 Ajman, 5 Umm Al Quwain, 6 Ras Al Khaimah, 7 Fujairah). That tells you which authority to chase about the residence. For the card and the fingerprints, the answer is always ICP. The typing side is explained in Amer vs Tasheel.

After the Emirates ID biometrics appointment

Once ICP accepts the capture, the card moves to printing and delivery. ICP’s published service time for new, renewal and replacement cards is 5 days, after which the card is sent by courier (or collected from a centre on urgent service). The earlier version of this guide gave five to ten working days; we have aligned it with ICP’s published time.

What to do next depends on what you need:

Check that the courier has your current address and mobile number on the application. A card that is printed but cannot be delivered is a delivery problem, not a biometrics problem, and it is handled differently.

Fees connected to the Emirates ID biometrics appointment

There is no line on any ICP card for “biometrics” or “fingerprint capture”. The appointment is part of the service you have already paid for. The table shows the published ICP fees that sit around it.

ICP’s renewal card shows the per-year fee but, in the version we read, did not list the AED 100 smart services fee that appears on the new and replacement cards. Expect the total at the counter or online to include service and e-channel charges on top of the per-year fee; the payment screen shows the exact breakdown before you pay. What goes wrong with the fingerprint appointment, and how to avoid it

Emirates ID biometrics appointment: six cases, worked through

These cases are built from the situations we see most often. Names and identifying details are left out, and the figures are the published ones.

1. New hire in Dubai who needs the medical and fingerprints in one morning

An engineer entered Dubai on an employment entry permit with a start date ten days away. The residence and Emirates ID applications were typed together, and the first fingerprint appointment offered was at a biometrics centre across the city on a different day from the medical. We rebooked the fingerprint appointment at Al Nahda, which sits inside a Salem medical centre, for the same morning as the medical. One trip, both steps done, and the card followed within ICP’s published 5 days of biometrics.

2. Family renewal with children aged 9, 13 and 16

Both parents and three children were renewing in Sharjah. The parents’ renewals went through without a new capture. The 16-year-old, whose last card was issued at 13, received a fingerprint appointment, because this was the first application since turning 15. The two younger children needed only compliant new photos. The family attended Al Ghubaiba with just the teenager, rather than taking everyone out of school.

3. Retired resident aged 72 renewing in Dubai

A retired resident living with a son was worried about travelling to a centre. His fingerprints were already on file from earlier cards. Under ICP’s rule for senior citizens, no new fingerprints were taken on renewal, and the card was couriered. Had he been called for any reason, he could have asked for the priority queue and wheelchair assistance that ICP lists at its centres.

4. Missed slot while travelling

A resident submitted a renewal online, received an SMS appointment, then left on a work trip and forgot about it. Three weeks later the status still showed the biometrics stage. We rescheduled through ICP smart services for the morning after her return, using the application email and number, before ICP’s completion period ran out. Had the application been cancelled, a fresh application and payment would have been needed.

5. Domestic worker in Abu Dhabi booked at the wrong centre

A family sponsoring a housemaid received a fingerprint appointment at Mussafah, which takes fingerprints from men only. We moved the fingerprint appointment to Khalifa Customer Happiness Center in Khalifa City A for the same week, and the sponsor drove her there with her original passport and the application form.

6. Worker whose fingerprints would not register

A construction supervisor with badly worn fingertips had several fingers fail at the scanner. He told the officer, who recorded what could be captured. He asked before leaving whether his biometrics were complete, was told they were, and the card arrived. If a capture is ever not accepted, expect to be asked to attend again; there is no other fix.

We will type and submit the Emirates ID application with a compliant photo, book or move your Emirates ID biometrics appointment at the centre that suits you, tell you exactly who in the family needs to attend, pass on government fees at cost with receipts, and follow the card until it is delivered.

We will not attend biometrics on your behalf (nobody can), promise a slot or a date that only ICP controls, offer any “home biometrics” arrangement that ICP does not publish, or charge you for a step you can easily do yourself, such as moving a single appointment online.
