What to bring
- Original passport, with at least six months validity
- Entry permit or visa page, or the application reference
- Application receipt from the typing centre
- Existing Emirates ID, if you hold one and are renewing or replacing
- Appointment confirmation, where one was issued
An authorised partner can lodge almost every transaction in the residence chain on your behalf. Two things cannot be delegated: the medical fitness test and biometrics. Both require you to be physically present.
If you are outside the UAE, the chain simply pauses until you return. Plan travel around this rather than discovering it mid-process.
Dress and appearance
The photograph taken here becomes your Emirates ID photograph, so it is worth a moment’s thought:
- White or light background is used, so avoid a white top — you will blend into it
- Face fully visible, forehead to chin
- No sunglasses; prescription glasses are generally acceptable, though you may be asked to remove them for glare
- Head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted, provided the face is visible
- Neutral expression, facing the camera directly
The photograph will be on the card for two years — or ten, on a Golden Visa. That is the practical argument for not attending straight off a night flight.
Fingerprint problems
A small proportion of people have difficulty registering fingerprints. Manual work, certain skin conditions, age and recent injuries can all reduce print quality. This is routine and staff deal with it regularly:
- Moisturise the night before — dry or cracked skin scans poorly
- Avoid heavy manual work immediately beforehand, which temporarily flattens ridges
- Recent cuts or henna can interfere; mention it rather than repeating failed scans
- Where prints genuinely cannot be captured, an alternative process exists — ask rather than leaving without completing
Children and exemptions
Children under 15 are generally exempt from fingerprinting, but a photograph is still required, so the child must attend. Parents frequently assume a child’s card can be processed entirely on paper and are surprised at the delay.
Where a family is applying together, book everyone into the same visit. Two trips to the same centre a week apart is a common and entirely avoidable waste of a morning.

Where you attend
Biometrics are captured at ICP-approved centres, including typing centres authorised to take them. In Dubai this is commonly arranged alongside the rest of the residence chain through an Amer centre.
Availability varies by location and time of day. Early slots are generally easier than late-afternoon ones, and the days immediately after a public holiday are the worst for queues.

Booking the medical and biometrics close together is the single easiest way to compress the overall timeline. Scheduling them a week apart adds a week for no reason at all.
Booking, and what availability really looks like
Slots are released continuously rather than in weekly batches, so an appointment that shows nothing available in the morning may show openings the same afternoon. Where the application is being handled on your behalf, the booking is normally made for you and you simply receive the time — which is precisely why some applicants never realise an appointment was issued at all.
Three practical points on availability:
- Early slots clear faster. The first hour after opening runs close to schedule; late afternoon accumulates the day’s overruns.
- The days after a public holiday are the worst. Two or three days of deferred appointments compress into one.
- Urgent handling generally secures a same or next-day slot, which is often the single biggest time saving available in the whole chain.
Why an appointment gets turned away on the day
Being sent away without completing is uncommon but avoidable. The recurring reasons:

Renewals are different

The exceptions are where the previous capture was of poor quality, where a long period has elapsed, or where the record needs correcting for another reason such as a name correction. In those cases you will be asked to attend.
Sequencing it properly
The single largest avoidable delay in the residence chain is scheduling the medical and biometrics on separate weeks. Both are short, both are in person, and both can usually be arranged within a couple of days of each other.
Booked together, the in-person portion of the entire process is a single morning. Booked casually, it becomes two trips across two weeks, and the card arrives a fortnight later than it needed to.
What happens immediately afterwards
Nothing visible, which is the source of most of the anxiety. There is no confirmation email, no receipt of completion beyond what you were already holding, and no notification when the file moves to the next stage.
What is happening is that the captured data goes to the ICP for verification against the visa file, and once cleared the card enters the printing queue. From your side the only meaningful signal is the application status, which is why the reference number on your receipt is the one piece of paper worth photographing before you leave the centre.
