Key takeaways
- Both are self-sponsored — no employer holds your residency. That is the shared benefit and the reason either beats an employment visa.
- Golden is 5 or 10 years on a monthly salary of no less than AED 30,000 or AED 2 million investment. Green is 5 years at AED 15,000 a month.
- If you earn between AED 15,000 and AED 30,000 a month, Green is very likely your answer and Golden is not.
- Green gives six months of grace if your job ends. An employment visa gives thirty days.
These two get discussed as if one is simply a lesser version of the other. They are not. They serve different people, and a large number of professionals in Dubai are eligible for one while being told about the other.
Side by side
| Green Visa | Golden Visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Term | 5 years | 5 or 10 years |
| Salary route | AED 15,000/month, MoHRE levels 1–3 | AED 30,000/month |
| Investment route | Investor / partner | AED 2,000,000 property or public investment |
| Self-employed route | AED 360,000/year over 2 years | AED 500,000 project (entrepreneur) |
| Sponsor | Yourself | Yourself |
| Grace on expiry or cancellation | 180 days | 180 days |
| Sponsor family | Yes | Yes, with wider allowances |
| Sons over 18 | Standard restrictions apply | Usually sponsorable without the age limit |
| Domestic staff | Standard limits | Without the usual numerical limits |
| Degree required | Yes, attested | Yes on the professional route |
The grace period is often quoted as a Golden Visa advantage. It is not: ICP places Golden, Green and Blue residence holders and their families in the same 180-day tier. Where the standard employment residence gets 30 days, both of these get six months.
Which one is actually yours
Basic salary below AED 15,000
Neither, on the salary routes. You remain on an employment visa unless you qualify through property or a business. Worth revisiting after your next increment — and worth checking whether your basic could be restructured.
Basic salary AED 15,000 to AED 29,999
Green Visa. This is the band most people do not realise is served, and where the difference between thirty days of grace and six months genuinely changes your position if a job ends.
Basic salary AED 30,000 or above
Golden Visa, on the skilled professional route. Ten years, and wider family allowances.
You own UAE property worth AED 2 million or more
Golden Visa on the property route — and since February 2026 a mortgage no longer disqualifies you.
Both thresholds are assessed on the basic salary line of your registered contract. Someone on AED 45,000 total with AED 22,000 basic does not reach Golden — but comfortably clears Green. Check the contract before assuming either.
The six-month difference
This is the practical distinction that matters most day to day, and it is rarely explained properly.
On an employment visa, losing your job starts a thirty-day clock. You are negotiating your exit, finding a new role and arranging a visa transfer inside a month, with overstay at AED 50 a day waiting on the other side.
On a Green Visa, you have six months and your residency is not tied to the employer in the first place. That changes what you can turn down, how you negotiate, and whether you can afford to leave a role that is not working.
What neither one changes
- You still need attested qualifications where the route requires them, and often MOHRE equivalency on top
- Outstanding fines still block the file — ILOE, traffic, immigration
- You still need medical fitness and an Emirates ID
- Family sponsorship still has accommodation requirements
- Neither is citizenship — both are renewable residency
Cost comparison
| Green Visa | Golden Visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Government-related total | AED 4,000 – 7,000 | AED 5,950 – 10,400 |
| Emirates ID | Per year of validity | AED 1,000 – 1,200 for a 10-year card |
| Cost per year of residency | Lower over 5 years | Lower over 10 years |
Per year of residency secured, a ten-year Golden Visa is usually the better value — if you qualify. If you do not, that comparison is academic.
If you work in healthcare or education, assess the professional route before settling for either — see the Golden Visa for doctors, nurses and teachers.
Not sure which band you fall into?
Send us your labour contract or title deed. We will tell you which route fits, whether you qualify today, and what is missing if you do not.
Full criteria for each are on our Green Visa and Golden Visa service pages, or run the Golden Visa eligibility checker — it flags the Green Visa automatically if you fall short.
Green Visa vs Golden Visa questions
Is the Green Visa better than the Golden Visa?
Neither is better in the abstract — they serve different eligibility bands. Golden is longer and offers wider family allowances, but requires a monthly salary of no less than AED 30,000 or AED 2 million invested. Green requires AED 15,000 a month and is achievable for far more people.
Can I upgrade from a Green Visa to a Golden Visa?
Yes. They are separate applications, so if your circumstances change — a salary increase past AED 30,000 or a qualifying property purchase — you can apply for the Golden Visa at that point.
Which gives longer grace if I lose my job?
The Green Visa gives six months to find new work or change status. Golden Visa holders benefit from up to 180 days of grace where the permit lapses. Both are dramatically better than the thirty days on a standard employment visa.
Do both need an attested degree?
The Green Visa skilled and self-employed routes require a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma, attested if issued abroad. The Golden Visa professional route requires the same. Investment routes are assessed on the asset rather than qualifications.
Can I sponsor my family on a Green Visa?
Yes, subject to the standard accommodation and documentary requirements. Golden Visa holders get wider allowances, including sponsoring adult sons without the usual age restriction in most categories.
Please note. Thresholds and categories change. Verified August 2026. Eligibility is assessed on your specific documents — have your case reviewed before applying. General information, not legal advice.
If you would rather have it handled
Golden Visa applications fail on preparation far more often than on eligibility — a document that was never attested, an equivalency that was never obtained, a supporting file assembled in the wrong order.
We prepare and submit these as part of our PRO services in Dubai, including the attestation and equivalency work that usually sits behind them.
