Golden Visa Salary Route: Why Your Package Is Not Your Salary — MIRDXB PRO guide

Key takeaways

  • There is a salary route to the Golden Visa that needs no property and no capital — and most people who qualify have never checked.
  • What counts is the salary on your registered MOHRE contract, not your total package.
  • Salary alone is not enough. A valid contract, clean file and matching documents are assessed alongside it.
  • Bonuses, commission and allowances generally do not count toward the threshold.

The Golden Visa is discussed as though it were only for investors and property buyers. It is not. There is a route for salaried professionals, and the people most likely to qualify — senior employees on good packages — are often the ones who assume it is not for them.

What counts as salary

Your package is not your salary

The assessment looks at the salary stated on your registered MOHRE labour contract. That is the figure the authority can verify.

Bonuses, commission, school fees, flights and end-of-service accruals do not usually count, however substantial. A package described as “AED 35,000 a month” can be a contract salary well below the threshold once the allowances are stripped out.

Check your contract before assuming either way. The number that matters is the one MoHRE holds — and it is often lower than people remember agreeing to, because of how the package was structured at hiring.

What is assessed alongside salary

FactorWhy it matters
Registered MOHRE contractThe verifiable source of the salary figure
Valid residence visaCurrent status at the point of application
QualificationAttested, and equivalated where the profession requires
Job title and seniorityConsistency with the salary claimed
Salary payment historyWPS records evidencing the salary is actually paid
Clean fileNo outstanding fines, bans or unresolved cases

WPS history is worth dwelling on. A contract stating a salary that WPS shows was never paid at that level is a weak application. Consistency between the contract, the bank record and the claim is what makes the file credible.

Where salaried applications fail

  • Package quoted instead of contract salary. The most common reason for a confident application being refused.
  • Contract never registered or never updated after a raise — so the salary on file is the old one.
  • Qualification not attested, or equivalency outstanding for a regulated profession.
  • Name inconsistency across passport, degree and contract.
  • WPS gaps that contradict the stated salary.
  • Outstanding fines, which stop the file regardless of merit.
If you had a raise, check it was registered

Salary increases are frequently agreed internally and never reflected in a registered contract amendment. The authority sees the registered figure, not the payslip.

If your contract is out of date, registering an amendment through Tasheel before applying can be the difference between qualifying and not — see labour contract typing.

For a senior salaried professional the salary route is usually the cleanest: nothing to buy, nothing to nominate, and the evidence already exists in your contract and WPS record. Healthcare and education professionals should also check the dedicated professional pathways, which assess standing rather than salary.

What to check before applying

1. Read your registered contract

Not your offer letter and not your payslip. The registered MOHRE contract is the document assessed.

2. Confirm it is current

If your salary rose and the contract was never amended, fix that first.

3. Check attestation and equivalency

Complete, not in progress. This is the most common avoidable delay.

4. Clear the file

Traffic fines, immigration fines, anything unresolved. They stop the application without refusing it.

5. Then apply

Fees are not refunded on refusal, and refusals are recorded. Order matters.

How the salary is actually verified

Applicants often assume a payslip or a letter from HR settles the question. Neither is the primary evidence.

EvidenceWeightWhy

WPS payment historyStrongShows the salary was genuinely paid
Bank statementsSupportingCorroborates the WPS record
Salary certificateSupportingEmployer assertion, not independent
PayslipsWeak aloneInternal document
Offer letterNot usedSuperseded by the contract

The pattern is consistent: independently verifiable records carry weight, employer-produced documents corroborate. Where the contract and the WPS history agree, the application is straightforward. Where they diverge, expect questions.

If you are just below the threshold

Being marginally short is common, and it is not necessarily the end of the route. Options worth examining before giving up:

  • An unregistered raise. If your salary rose and the contract was never amended, registering the amendment reflects reality rather than manufacturing it. Check this first — it resolves more cases than anything else.
  • How the package is split. Some contracts allocate an artificially low basic figure to reduce end-of-service liability. Where that can legitimately be corrected with your employer, it affects several things at once — including your gratuity.
  • A promotion or role change already in progress — timing the application after it, rather than before.
  • A different category entirely. Healthcare and education professionals are assessed on standing rather than salary; property or business routes may fit better if you hold qualifying assets.
  • The Green Visa as an interim step — five years, self-sponsored, on a considerably lower bar. Compared in Golden versus Green.
What not to do

Do not have a contract amended to state a salary you are not actually paid. WPS records will not support it, the inconsistency is visible, and a refusal on those grounds is considerably worse than not applying.

The salary route works precisely because the evidence is verifiable. That cuts both ways.

What happens after approval

Once granted, the visa is yours rather than your employer’s. You can change jobs without an immigration event, and losing a role does not start a countdown on your residency. Your family follows your ten-year term instead of a two-year cycle — set out in Golden Visa family sponsorship.

The obligation that remains is at renewal, when eligibility is tested again. If you move to a lower-paid role, or step out of employment entirely, plan the basis on which you will renew before the term ends rather than in its final months.

Not sure whether your salary qualifies?

Send us your registered labour contract. We will tell you whether the salary route is open to you, what else the file needs, and whether another category would be a stronger application.

Check your eligibility

Salary requirement questions

Does my total package count toward the threshold?

Generally no. The assessment uses the salary on your registered MOHRE contract. Bonuses, commission, housing, schooling and flights are usually excluded, which is why packages that sound comfortably above the bar often are not.

What if my salary was increased but the contract was not updated?

The authority sees the registered figure. Register a contract amendment through Tasheel before applying, otherwise you are assessed on the old salary regardless of what you are actually paid.

Is salary alone enough to qualify?

No. A valid contract, current residence visa, attested qualifications, consistent WPS history and a clean file are assessed alongside it. Salary opens the route; the rest of the file decides the outcome.

Do I need a degree for the salary route?

Qualifications are assessed as part of the file, and for regulated professions attestation and MOHRE equivalency are expected. Requirements vary by category, so confirm before assuming a degree is or is not needed.

What happens at renewal if my salary drops?

Eligibility is re-tested. Falling below the threshold, or losing the qualifying employment without a replacement basis, can affect renewal. Plan ahead if a change of role is coming.

Can I apply if I am between jobs?

The salary route depends on a current registered contract, so a gap generally weakens or blocks it. Other categories may still apply — check the full eligibility criteria before assuming you are out.

Please note. Salary thresholds and category criteria are set by the ICP and revised periodically. Deliberately not quoted as a fixed figure here because they change — confirm the current threshold before applying. Verified August 2026. General information, not legal advice.

If you would rather have it handled

Golden Visa applications fail on preparation far more often than on eligibility — a document that was never attested, an equivalency that was never obtained, a supporting file assembled in the wrong order.

We prepare and submit these as part of our PRO services in Dubai, including the attestation and equivalency work that usually sits behind them.
