UAE Visa Types: The Complete List, Explained by What Each One Does — MIRDXB PRO guide

Key takeaways

  • The UAE does not have one visa system. It has three layers — an entry permit that gets you in, a residence permit that lets you stay, and an Emirates ID that proves who you are. Most confusion comes from treating them as one thing.
  • Every long-term route now has published thresholds. Golden needs AED 2 million invested or a AED 50,000 salary for executives; Green needs AED 15,000 a month for skilled workers or AED 360,000 a year for freelancers; Blue needs environmental contribution. All are on ICP’s own pages.
  • The Golden Residence is 10 years for public investments but only 5 years for real estate. This is the single most misreported fact about UAE visas.
  • A jobseeker visit visa exists — 60, 90 or 120 days, no sponsor, no host. Very few people know it is there.
  • A family residence is a residence without work permission. A spouse or adult child needs a separate MoHRE work permit before taking a job.

There is no single official list of “UAE visa types”, because the visas are administered by three different authorities under different frameworks. What exists instead is a set of service cards scattered across ICP, GDRFA and MoHRE, each describing one route in isolation.

This guide assembles them into one place. Every category, every duration, every published threshold — taken from the authorities’ own pages and organised the way a working PRO actually thinks about them: what gets you in, what lets you stay, and what frees you from a sponsor.

The three-layer model: the thing to understand first

If you learn one structural fact about the UAE system, learn this. A resident holds three separate things from three separate authorities, in a fixed order.

LayerWhat it isWho issues it
1. Entry permitPermission to enter the country for a stated purpose, for a defined windowGDRFA for Dubai files, ICP elsewhere
2. Residence permitPermission to live here, issued after entry and after the supporting stepsGDRFA or ICP
3. Emirates IDThe identity record everything else keys toICP, every emirate, always

For an employment route there is a fourth thing that comes before all of them: the MoHRE work permit, which authorises the job itself. Labour side first, immigration side second. Always.

The mistake this model prevents

People are told “your visa is approved” and assume they are residents. What has usually been approved is the entry permit — permission to arrive, with a clock attached.

GDRFA is explicit about that clock: a work entry visa allows the holder to remain sixty days from the date of entry until the requirements for residency are completed. ICP applies the same sixty-day limit and warns that overstay fines apply to the applicant if the residence is not finalised inside it.

An approved entry permit is the start of the process, not the end of it.

Who issues what

AuthorityResponsible for
ICP — Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port SecurityEntry permits and residence for six emirates; the Emirates ID for everybody; the Golden, Green and Blue programmes; nationality and passports
GDRFA — Dubai’s directorateEntry permits and residence for Dubai files; entry and exit through Dubai’s ports
MoHREWork permits and employment contracts — the right to work, not the right to stay

We cover each in full: ICP, GDRFA and MoHRE, and the split between the two immigration authorities in ICP vs GDRFA.

Part one: entry permits and short-stay visas

These get you into the country. None of them makes you a resident.

Tourist visa

Short-stay entry for tourism. Issued in varying durations and entry counts, and commonly arranged through airlines, hotels and tour operators as well as directly.

Visit visa

Entry sponsored by a relative, a friend, a company or a hotel. GDRFA publishes visit visa issuance among its entry permit services, alongside a specific service for a visit visa for a relative or friend.

A visit visa is the usual lawful route for family members who cannot be sponsored for residence — siblings, for example, who are not a sponsorable residence category.

Jobseeker visit visa

This one deserves more attention than it gets. The UAE Government portal describes it plainly: foreigners are granted a visit visa to search for a job without requiring a host or sponsor in the country, for one trip.

Jobseeker visit visa — the published durations

You can apply for a jobseeker visa with a validity of 60, 90 or 120 days.

No sponsor. No host. One trip. For a qualified professional who wants to be in the country while interviewing rather than applying from abroad, this route exists and is frequently overlooked entirely.

Visit visa to explore investment opportunities

A distinct category published under the investor route — entry specifically to assess investment opportunities, rather than as a tourist or a jobseeker.

Work entry visa

The employment entry permit. GDRFA describes it as giving the foreigner a work entry visa allowing them to remain sixty days from the date of entry until residency requirements are completed — covering the federal and local government sectors, the private sector, and domestic service workers.

It requires MoHRE’s endorsement of the work permit first, which is the rule that fixes the order of the whole process.

Transit visa

Short-duration entry for travellers passing through the UAE en route elsewhere.

Medical entry — patient and companion permits

The UAE Government portal lists patient and companion entry permits as a distinct category, for people travelling to the UAE for treatment together with someone accompanying them.

Temporary and mission work permits

MoHRE publishes temporary work permits and mission work permits as separate services from the standard work permit — for work of a defined limited duration, and for task or project-based assignments respectively. See our guide to work permit types.

Part two: sponsored residence permits

These make you a resident, and every one of them depends on somebody or something sponsoring you. ICP’s residency permit service publishes them as distinct categories, each with its own terms and documents.

ICP residency categoryWho it covers
Government, private or free zone entitiesEmployment residence
Family members of a foreign residentSpouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, children with special needs
Family members of a UAE or GCC nationalForeign-passport relatives of citizens
RetireeThe retirement route
Property ownerResidence tied to property ownership
Accredited educational institutionsForeign students
Green Residence investor, Golden Residence, Blue ResidenceThe self-sponsored long-term routes

Employment residence

The most common route. The employer sponsors, the MoHRE work permit runs two years, and the residence is issued on a matching cycle after entry, medical fitness and Emirates ID biometrics.

The dependency is total: your right to remain is attached to the employer’s establishment file. If the employer’s file is suspended, or the establishment card lapses, your renewal stops regardless of anything you have done. Our employment visa cost breakdown sets out the fees line by line.

Family residence

A resident sponsors their family. ICP’s published sponsorable categories are precise:

  • Spouse
  • Unmarried daughters
  • Sons under 25 years old
  • Children with special needs — regardless of age

The financial condition is a minimum monthly income of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing. Green Residence holders may additionally sponsor first-degree relatives, which reaches parents.

Two things about family residence that catch everyone

It is a residence without work permission. ICP and GDRFA both publish “residence without work permission” as a category. A spouse or adult child who takes a job needs a separate MoHRE work permit — the Ministry publishes one specifically for dependants sponsored by family members.

It cannot outlast the sponsor’s own permit. ICP’s condition reads: the family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it. Renew yourself first.

Our family visa documents guide covers the full requirements, and the salary requirement covers the thresholds.

Residence for family of a UAE citizen

A distinct and considerably more generous route. Under the Executive Regulation of the law on entry and residence of foreigners, a UAE citizen’s spouse, parent or child holding a foreign passport can obtain a residence visa for five years without having to work in the UAE, with the citizen as sponsor.

There is a further provision worth knowing: a foreign widow or divorced woman who is the mother of a UAE citizen can obtain a residence visa without having to work — and in that case the sponsor is the oldest child.

Student residence

A student may reside under the sponsorship of a parent who is a UAE resident, or under the sponsorship of the accredited university or college where they study. ICP lists accredited educational institutions as a residency category in their own right.

Outstanding students are additionally eligible for the Golden Residence, covered below.

Domestic worker residence

A separate regime with its own MoHRE work permit service, its own employment contract service, and its own procedures. If you employ domestic staff, the standard employment route does not apply — see our domestic worker visa page.

Newborn residence

A child born in the UAE needs its own residence, within a defined window that starts at birth. The birth certificate is issued locally, which removes the foreign-attestation problem but introduces its own sequence — local birth certificate, then passport from the parents’ embassy, then residence. See newborn baby visa.

Property owner residence

ICP publishes “Resident — Property Owner” as a residency category. It sits separately from the Golden Residence real estate route, which has its own much higher threshold, and it is one of the categories ICP assigns a 90-day grace period on expiry.

Residence visa for working outside the UAE

A category published by the UAE Government portal for people who reside in the UAE while their work is performed elsewhere — a recognition of remote and cross-border working arrangements.

Part three: the long-term, self-sponsored routes

These are structurally different from everything above, and the difference is not prestige. It is independence.

A sponsored residence can be ended by a third party’s decision or neglect — an employer who does not renew, an establishment card nobody tracked, a family sponsor whose own status lapses. A self-sponsored residence cannot. Anyone who has waited on an unresponsive employer understands the difference immediately.

RouteDurationSponsorCore idea
Golden Residence5 or 10 years, automatic renewalNoneInvestment, exceptional talent, outstanding students, humanitarian service
Green Residence5 years, renewableNoneSkilled employment, freelancing, investment
Blue Residence10 years, renewableNoneEnvironmental and sustainability contribution
Retirement residence5 yearsRetired foreigners

All three of the coloured routes also allow the holder to sponsor family, and all three attract the 180-day grace period on expiry — the longest tier ICP publishes, against 30 days for most standard categories.

Golden Residence: every category and threshold

ICP describes the Golden Residence as enabling long-term residency for five or ten years, with automatic renewal, without the need for a sponsor, allowing holders and their families to live, work, study and invest.

The durations are not uniform. This is where most published guidance goes wrong.

CategoryDurationPublished requirement
Investors in public investments10 yearsMinimum capital investment of AED 2 million; or ownership of real estate or a stake in an establishment paying annual taxes of no less than AED 250,000
Investors in real estate5 yearsProperty or properties valued at AED 2 million or more, without loans
Humanitarian pioneers and frontline heroes10 yearsCertificates of appreciation; financial support for humanitarian initiatives, or a minimum of five years’ experience
Entrepreneurs5 yearsInnovative or technology-based projects; documents verifying project value; a letter from a business incubator or the relevant authority
Outstanding students — high school5 yearsExcellence certificates and recommendation letters
Outstanding students — university10 yearsExcellence certificates and recommendation letters
Exceptional talents and specialised expertise10 yearsDoctors, scientists, inventors, creative professionals, executive directors, athletes, PhD holders and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields
The most misreported fact about UAE visas

Public investments: 10 years. Real estate: 5 years.

An enormous amount of published guidance states that buying property worth AED 2 million gets you a ten-year Golden Visa. ICP’s own page says five. The ten-year duration attaches to public investments, not to property.

If you are making a AED 2 million decision on the strength of a duration, check the category it actually attaches to.

The documentary thresholds, in detail

ICP publishes the supporting documents for each route, and they contain figures that do not appear in the headline criteria.

CategoryDocuments and the numbers inside them
Public investmentsA letter from an accredited investment fund confirming a deposit of no less than AED 2 million; or a valid commercial or industrial licence with a Memorandum of Association showing capital of no less than AED 2 million; or a letter from the Federal Tax Authority confirming the owner or partner pays taxes of no less than AED 250,000 annually
Real estateA letter from the Land Registration Department confirming ownership of one or more properties valued at AED 2 million or more, without loans; plus proof of residence in the UAE
Humanitarian pioneersProof of involvement in humanitarian organisations for five years or more, or completion of at least 500 volunteer hours; proof of financial support for humanitarian initiatives of no less than AED 2 million; passport copy and health insurance
EntrepreneursA letter from an auditor confirming the project value is no less than AED 500,000; a letter from the relevant authorities or an accredited business incubator confirming the project is innovative, technology-based or future-oriented
Outstanding high school studentsA recommendation letter from the Ministry of Education and proof of academic excellence with a score of 95% or above
Outstanding university studentsA recommendation letter or graduation certificate with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or above from accredited universities, and no more than two years since graduation

Exceptional talent: which authority endorses you

The talent route is not a single application. Each profession is endorsed by a different body, and ICP names them:

ProfessionEndorsing authority or requirement
DoctorsAn accreditation letter from the Ministry of Health to practise the profession
ScientistsA recommendation letter from the Emirates Council of Scientists, or an award for scientific excellence
InventorsA recommendation letter from the Ministry of Economy
Cultural and artistic creativesAn accreditation letter from the Ministry of Culture and Youth, or the Department of Culture and Arts
Executive directorsA certified university degree, a minimum of five years’ experience, an employment contract, and a salary certificate showing no less than AED 50,000
AthletesA recommendation letter from the General Sports Authority or one of the sports councils
Specialists in priority scientific and engineering fieldsA certified PhD or university degree, an employment contract, and a passport copy

The executive director figure is the one most people miss: AED 50,000 a month, evidenced by a salary certificate, alongside the degree, the experience and the contract.

For what the Golden Residence costs to apply for, see our Golden Visa cost guide.

Green Residence: every category and threshold

ICP describes the Green Residence as a five-year renewable residence enabling holders to live and work in the UAE without the need for a sponsor, with the ability to sponsor spouse and children, and specified grace periods on expiry.

CategoryPublished requirements
Skilled workersA valid employment contract within the UAE; a professional classification of levels 1 to 3 under MoHRE’s occupational classification; a qualification of no less than a bachelor’s degree; and a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000 or its equivalent
Freelancers and self-employedA freelance or self-employment permit issued by MoHRE; a bachelor’s degree, specialised diploma or equivalent; proof of stable annual income or financial solvency; and annual freelance income over the previous two years of no less than AED 360,000
Investors and business partnersProof of investment or contribution to a business venture in the UAE, with the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities
The Green Residence is the most achievable of the three

A skilled professional earning AED 15,000 a month with a bachelor’s degree and a MoHRE skill level of 1 to 3 already meets the criteria. That is a senior-but-ordinary salary, not an exceptional one.

Yet most employees in that position never apply, because they assume long-term residence means Golden and Golden means millions. It does not. The Green route exists precisely for salaried professionals and freelancers, and it breaks the dependency on the employer in exactly the same way.

The freelance threshold — AED 360,000 a year averaged over two years — is AED 30,000 a month, which many established freelancers clear without realising a residence route attaches to it.

See our Green Visa page for the application route.

Blue Residence: the newest and least known

Launched in 2024, the Blue Residence is a ten-year renewable residence granted for exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability, whether made inside the UAE or internationally.

Its terms are unusually generous:

  • Ten years, renewable, no sponsor required.
  • Residence for family members — spouse, children regardless of age, and parents — also for ten years.
  • The ability to sponsor domestic workers.
  • A six-month multiple-entry visa, renewable, to complete procedures.
  • Dependants may remain for the residence validity period if the holder dies.
  • A Golden Residence may be converted to a Blue Residence where the requirements are met.

Five target categories: environmental and sustainability influencers, scientists and researchers, investors and entrepreneurs, inventors and innovators, and elite specialists in environmental organisations. Thresholds include financial support of no less than AED 1 million for influencers and fully owned capital of no less than AED 2 million with annual revenues of AED 1 million for investors.

The provision that children qualify regardless of age is not available on any other route, and it matters enormously to families with adult children who would otherwise age out at 25.

We cover it in full in our ICP guide.

Retirement residence

Retired foreigners can apply for a long-term visa of five years. ICP lists “Resident — Retiree” as its own residency category with its own terms and documents.

Grace tiers are as ICP publishes them; where a route’s tier is not separately published we have left it blank rather than assuming one.

The lifecycle of any residence

Whatever the route, a residence moves through the same five stages. Knowing them tells you where a file has stalled.

  • Eligibility. Meeting the published threshold for the route — salary, investment, relationship, enrolment or endorsement.
  • Entry permit. Permission to enter, with a defined window. For employment this follows MoHRE’s work permit approval, never precedes it.
  • In-country completion. Medical fitness for those aged 18 and over, Emirates ID biometrics from age 15, and health insurance.
  • Residence issuance. The residence is recorded electronically and the Emirates ID is produced.
  • Maintenance. Renewal on the route’s cycle, amendment whenever anything changes, cancellation when it ends.

Stage three is where most delays happen, because it depends on the applicant attending appointments rather than on paperwork the sponsor controls.

When a residence ends

Four things can happen, and they are not interchangeable.

EndingWhat it means
ExpiryThe permit runs out. The grace period for your tier begins, then AED 50 per day
CancellationThe sponsor formally ends it. The Emirates ID is cancelled automatically with it
TransferMoving to a new sponsor. On the labour side this needs the previous work permit cancelled or transferred first
ConversionMoving between routes — for example a Golden Residence converted to Blue where the requirements are met

Cancellation is the sponsor’s duty, not the resident’s, and leaving a residence uncancelled is one of the most common unrecognised liabilities in the country. See cancelling an employment visa.

Free zones, mainland and the financial free zones

The route categories above are federal. What changes between jurisdictions is administration, not eligibility.

  • Mainland Dubai — licence from DED, labour through MoHRE, immigration through GDRFA and Amer.
  • Mainland outside Dubai — labour through MoHRE, immigration through ICP.
  • Free zones — licence and often immigration routed through the zone authority, with the zone’s own schedule. Federal labour law still applies in most zones.
  • DIFC and ADGM — their own employment legislation and their own courts, though immigration and the Emirates ID remain federal.

The constant across all four: the Emirates ID is always ICP, and the long-term route thresholds do not change by jurisdiction. See free zone vs mainland visas.

If you take one thing from this guide

Most people never review their visa route after they first arrive. They enter on an employment residence because that is what the job came with, and they stay on it for a decade — renewing every two years, dependent on an employer, on a thirty-day grace period.

Meanwhile the published thresholds sit there. AED 15,000 a month with a degree. AED 360,000 a year freelancing. A GPA of 3.8 within two years of graduating. A salary certificate at AED 50,000 for an executive. These are not exotic numbers, and every one of them unlocks a five or ten-year residence with no sponsor and a 180-day grace period.

It costs nothing to check which thresholds you already meet. That is the single most valuable thing this guide can tell you.

How to verify any of this yourself

You should not have to take our word for a AED 2 million threshold or a five-year duration. Everything in this guide is checkable in a few minutes, and knowing where to look is worth more than any single figure — because the figures change and the sources do not.

  • Long-term routes. ICP publishes a dedicated guide page for each of Golden, Green and Blue Residence, listing target categories, durations, key requirements and required documents. These are the authoritative statements of eligibility.
  • Sponsored residence categories. ICP’s Issuing Residency Permit service card carries a category selector — family members of a foreign resident, retiree, property owner, family of a UAE or GCC national, student, and the coloured routes. Selecting a category shows its own terms, fees and document list.
  • Grace periods and renewal. ICP’s Renewal of residency permits service card publishes the four tiers and the AED 50 per day charge.
  • Dubai entry permits. GDRFA’s service pages carry an expandable Fees section. The work visa page is where the AED 200 base fee and the conditional inside-country supplement are published.
  • Work permits. MoHRE’s service directory carries a card per permit type with conditions, documents, fees and processing time.
  • The plain-English layer. The UAE Government portal summarises most routes and states when each page was last updated, which is useful for judging currency.
The habit worth building

Before acting on any visa figure — from us or anyone else — find it on an authority’s own page. If a number cannot be traced to ICP, GDRFA, MoHRE or the government portal, treat it as commentary rather than fact.

That single habit would prevent most of the misinformation circulating about UAE visas, including the ten-year property claim that appears on hundreds of sites and nowhere on ICP’s.

What actually differs between routes

Duration is the headline, but three other differences matter more in practice.

Grace period on expiry

ICP publishes a tiered grace period after a residence expires or is cancelled, and the tier you fall into is decided by your route. This is one of the most consequential differences between visa types and it is almost never mentioned when routes are compared.

Grace periodWho it applies to
180 daysGolden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members; widows or divorced women who are residents; students after completing studies; foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens
90 daysSkilled workers in levels 1 to 3, and property owners
60 daysResidence permits issued with a guarantor or host
30 daysAll other categories

After the grace period, AED 50 per day accrues. The difference between the top and bottom tier is five months of lawful presence to sort out your next step — which, if a job ends unexpectedly, is the difference between an orderly transition and a scramble.

Our guide to the residence visa grace period works through the tiers in detail.

Who you may sponsor

Your routeWho you can sponsor
Standard employment residenceSpouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, children with special needs — subject to the AED 4,000 / AED 3,000-plus-housing threshold
Green ResidenceThe above, plus first-degree relatives — which reaches parents
Blue ResidenceSpouse, children regardless of age, and parents — for ten years. Plus domestic workers
Golden ResidenceSpouse and children, with the family’s residency tied to the holder’s
Family residence (as a dependant)Nobody — and you need a separate work permit to work

Dependency: the difference that matters most

A sponsored residence is contingent on somebody else’s compliance. A self-sponsored one is not. That single structural fact is worth more than the extra years.

The practical case for a long-term route

People frame Golden and Green as status. The real argument is risk.

On an employment residence, your right to remain can be interrupted by an expired establishment card, an unpaid company fine, a sponsor who stops responding, or a redundancy — none of which you control. On a self-sponsored residence, none of those touch you, and if things do go wrong you have 180 days rather than 30 to arrange what comes next.

If you meet the Green threshold, the question is not whether it is worth applying. It is why you have not.

How to work out which route applies to you

Work down this list and stop at the first match. It is the order a PRO would actually check.

  • Are you a foreign-passport spouse, parent or child of a UAE citizen? Five-year residence, no work requirement, citizen sponsors.
  • Do you have AED 2 million invested, or property of AED 2 million without loans? Golden Residence — ten years for public investments, five for real estate.
  • Are you a doctor, scientist, inventor, athlete, PhD holder, creative or executive on AED 50,000+? Golden Residence, exceptional talent, ten years, with the relevant authority’s endorsement.
  • Did you finish school at 95%+ or university at GPA 3.8+ within the last two years? Golden Residence, five or ten years.
  • Do you work in environmental protection or sustainability at a recognised level? Blue Residence, ten years.
  • Do you earn AED 15,000+ with a bachelor’s degree at MoHRE skill level 1–3? Green Residence, five years.
  • Are you freelancing on AED 360,000+ a year with a MoHRE permit? Green Residence, five years.
  • Are you retired? Retirement residence, five years.
  • Do you own property below the Golden threshold? Property owner residence, with a 90-day grace period.
  • None of the above, and you have a job offer? Employment residence, two years, employer-sponsored.
  • None of the above, and a family member is resident here? Family residence — without work permission.

Our free Golden Visa eligibility checker and family visa eligibility checker run the same logic.

UAE visa types questions

How many types of UAE visa are there?

There is no single official count, because entry permits, residence permits and work permits are administered separately by GDRFA, ICP and MoHRE. In practice there are roughly a dozen entry and short-stay categories, around nine residence categories published by ICP, and four self-sponsored long-term routes.

What is the difference between a visa and a residence permit?

An entry permit is permission to enter for a stated purpose within a defined window. A residence permit is permission to live here, issued after entry and after medical fitness and Emirates ID biometrics. Being told your visa is approved usually means the entry permit is approved.

How long is a Golden Visa valid?

Five or ten years with automatic renewal, depending on category. Public investments, humanitarian pioneers, exceptional talent and outstanding university students are ten years. Real estate investment, entrepreneurs and outstanding high school students are five.

Does buying property worth AED 2 million give a ten-year Golden Visa?

No. ICP publishes real estate investment as a five-year Golden Residence. The ten-year duration attaches to public investments. This is the most commonly misreported fact about the programme.

What salary do I need for a Green Visa?

For the skilled worker route, a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000, plus a valid UAE employment contract, a MoHRE occupational classification of levels 1 to 3, and a qualification of at least a bachelor’s degree.

Can freelancers get long-term residence?

Yes, through the Green Residence. It requires a MoHRE freelance or self-employment permit, a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma, and annual freelance income over the previous two years of no less than AED 360,000.

What is the Blue Residence?

A ten-year renewable residence launched in 2024 for exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability. It covers family including children regardless of age and parents, allows sponsoring domestic workers, and a Golden Residence can be converted to it where the requirements are met.

Is there a visa for looking for a job in the UAE?

Yes. The jobseeker visit visa is granted without requiring a host or sponsor, for one trip, with a validity of 60, 90 or 120 days.

Can I work on a family visa?

Not without a separate work permit. A family residence is a residence without work permission, and MoHRE publishes a specific work permit for dependants sponsored by family members. The employer applies for it.

Until what age can I sponsor my children?

Sons under 25. Unmarried daughters, with marital status rather than an age cut-off as the published condition. Children with special needs regardless of age. On the Blue Residence, children qualify regardless of age.

What visa do family members of UAE citizens get?

A UAE citizen’s spouse, parent or child holding a foreign passport can obtain a five-year residence without having to work, sponsored by the citizen. A foreign widow or divorced mother of a UAE citizen can obtain residence without working, sponsored by her oldest child.

Is there a retirement visa?

Yes. Retired foreigners can apply for a long-term visa of five years, and ICP lists retiree as its own residency category.

Which visa gives the longest grace period if it expires?

Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members get 180 days, along with widows and divorced women who are residents, students after completing studies, and foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens. Most standard categories get 30 days.

Can I hold more than one UAE residence visa?

No. A residence is held under one sponsorship arrangement at a time, and switching routes requires the existing residence to be cancelled or formally transferred. On the labour side, MoHRE separately states that a candidate may not possess an active work permit when a new one is applied for.

Which authority issues my visa?

GDRFA if your file is Dubai, ICP for the other six emirates. Your Emirates ID always comes from ICP regardless of emirate, and your work permit always comes from MoHRE or your free zone authority.

If you have been outside the UAE for more than six months and your residence has lapsed as a result, the published route back is set out in our guide to the UAE re-entry permit after 6 months — including the fee per month of delay and the exclusion that applies to Dubai residents.

Two routes from that list that people most often ask us to handle are the freelance permit and family residence visas.

Whichever route applies to you, the paperwork behind it is what our PRO services in Dubai team handles daily.

Please note. Every duration, threshold and category in this guide is taken from ICP’s, GDRFA’s or the UAE Government portal’s own published pages, checked in September 2026. Eligibility criteria and thresholds are set by the authorities and change — where a figure is not published, this guide says so rather than estimating it. Meeting a published threshold does not guarantee approval; decisions rest with the authority. Your own position depends on your emirate, your file and your circumstances. General information, not legal advice.
